It reminds her of the note, still sitting innocently atop her dresser. Max hardly gives herself the time to second-guess; she’s flipping through the channels again.
When she finds it, she hisses into the mic, “Wheeler, wake up, over.”
Nothing. She tries again.
“Mike, wake up, it’s Max.”
Still nothing.
“Mike, please wake up, please—“
“Wha— Max what the fuck?” a groggy voice finally crackles through the line.
Max sighs, relieved.
“Finally, oh my god,” she breathes out, resting her head back against her pillow.

Her mother’s husband, or more accurately Billy’s father, had moved out of their house a few weeks prior, leaving them stranded in a house they couldn’t afford. Her whole world was falling apart in front of her eyes and Mike held her all the way through it.
