Summary
In the distant past, Joshua had explained, entire nations had bowed to the awesome power of the Phoenix, and the firebird had waged war with numerous other gods in battles that shook and scorched the earth. Compared to that, the quiet life in a remote temple that did not even see that many worshippers was perhaps unimpressive—but Joshua had a different perspective.
"I rather think even the mighty Phoenix would prefer a peaceful existence, don't you?" he would say, the corners of his eyes crinkling as he smiled at Clive.

"That's alright," Joshua said, pulling his knees against his chest and murmuring quietly. "Even if you detested me for it, I wouldn't mind. As long as you don't leave me alone."
Clive leaned over and pressed a slow, gentle kiss on Joshua's lips.
"I don't detest you," he said, tapping their foreheads together. "I love you."
"I know. I promise I've thought this through. I'm not going out there just to die."
