Four weeks. Almost a month. The longest they’d broken up since leaving for college.
Like clockwork, every night Max would wake up to a phone call from Lucas, like he was trying to apologise and get her back, but only in the most irritating way possible.
Without failure, though, Max listened to the ringing, and then the voicemail of a voice filled with desperation, but never hope.
Max wanted hope.
Who was Lucas without Max? She would never know, she literally couldn’t.
Who was Max without Lucas? Well, she didn’t know that either, but now she kinda wanted to.
She was tired of clinging to a wasting relationship out of comfort, it was uncomfortable. She thought Lucas thought the same, but she wouldn’t know unless she answered him, and she wasn’t going to do that… yet.
Because Max did have someone that hoped for her, someone who strove to cheer her up when she was angry or sad, someone who completed thoughtless gestures like making her coffee without her having to ask, just like Lucas used to do. He was there, and one day she would be there too, once she could admit to her feelings.

Summary
Something smells like it's burning, but not the popcorn. It’s like… rubber? A burning tire maybe? But that’s not quite right either. There’s a hint of hand sanitizer underneath that smokey scent. Among the confusion two more things happen to Steve. He feels like his stomach is rising, not sinking, it feels like he’s dropping off the highest crest of the Indiana state fair’s shittiest rollercoaster. And suddenly his head feels fuzzy which bleeds slowly into an uncomfortable pressure in his skull. And Steve’s not so confused anymore. He’s just scared.

My stobin itch was not satisfied during season 5 so I repurposed my steddie fic and improved it. I could be convinced to make the steddie version updated too.
