Probabilmente nemmeno con l’aiuto di Sam, ma visto che dubitava di poter far cambiare idea all’ex assassino, andare insieme era la loro migliore opzione.”

“Might as well go in together, watch each other’s backs,” he said unflappably. Cause Barnes might have just single-handedly destroyed seven heavily harmed Hydra soldiers, thus saving Sam’s hide, but he still looked a very far cry from the unstoppable force he’d been on that bridge in DC: in the fluorescent light that filtered from the entrance through the vines, his paleness had taken a sickly yellow shade and his eyes were fever-bright and a thousand miles away; no way in hell he was in any condition to siege a Hydra base on his own, super-soldier or not. Probably not even with Sam’s help, but since he doubted he could make the former assassin change his mind, going in together was their best option.

Summary
He tries it the easy way, the first time, like the coward Steve's never believed he is.
It's 1943, and Bucky's still waking clammy with night sweats, phantom restraints pinning him down and Zola's voice in his head. He's still talking big to cover how he jerks away whenever anyone puts a hand on him. He's pretending he doesn't see the way Steve looks at him, the way they all look at him, like he's in danger of coming apart.
Only this time - this time when they try to give him a discharge, he takes it. He crams what little he owns in his duffel and ships off for the states.

He could stop, he knew. He didn’t have to watch the tape. But god, Steve missed Bucky -- missed him with something verging on desperation, so much that it was impossible to resist the pull. He fitted the tape into the video player and extended a shaking finger to press play.
Steve's wrestling with a guilt he can't seem to get over. He wants to know exactly what happened to Bucky in the time they lost.[written for whumptober 2022]
