    That question kept looping.
    Why him?
    Shedletsky had friends. Plenty of them. Good ones. People who were kind, generous, thoughtful in their own ways. He'd known loyalty, companionship, laughter, chaos.
    So why did today feel different?
    Why did something about Guest's attentiveness keep sticking under his skin?
    Why did his chest keep tightening like this?
    He dragged a hand slowly down his face.
    This was ridiculous.
    Except— he learned one thing during his long, complicated transition from being... what he used to be... to being human again.
    When something kept gnawing at you like this, ignoring it didn't help.
    And Shedletsky, for all his theatrics, wasn't stupid.
    So he did what he always did when something bothered him.
    He said it out loud.

    Elliot stepped out of his weathered car, a greasy pizza box clutched tightly in his trembling hands. He scanned the darkened street anxiously, his heart pounding in his chest. "Where are you?" he whimpered, a note of desperation creeping into his voice. Suddenly, his arms began to move of their own accord, a ominous red glow encircling them. "Y-You!" Elliot choked out, whirling around to face a nearby bush. Mocking laughter echoed through the air before fading into the night, leaving him staring at the shadows in confusion.
