Those poor frightened girls reminded him of himself as a child, though there was no one there to rescue him then. Things got better when he turned eighteen, he got hormones and surgery, and people started noticing him less. Maybe the girls would understand the exhaustion of existing as prey. Something to be consumed and coveted. Pretty young thing, he’d been called. Thing. Not a person, not a girl, not a boy. A pawn, an object to be used as bait or a bartering chip. He never really escaped that, he thought.
