Summary
Yanqing knows what overtraining feels like.
This is not that.
His body feels light. His cuts disappear. His dreams leave him crying over a warmth he cannot remember. Yanqing only wants to know what is happening to him.
When fear finally outweighs denial, Yanqing does not go to Jing Yuan. He cannot. Not yet. He does not want the healers whispering over his body. He does not want anyone looking at him like he is already something contaminated.
So when the symptoms begin to look like mara, he seeks out the only person he knows who has lived with a curse in her own blood.
Jingliu doesn't give him an answer. Then she breaks out of prison, takes him with her, and begins teaching him what a monster is supposed to be.

"You're trembling," Zhongli observes quietly, pausing in his ministrations.
"I believe it's called 'rage', Morax," comes Xingqiu’s soft reply, his voice steady despite the fury coursing through his veins.
Zhongli straightens slowly, eyes studying every line of tension in Xingqiu's frame. There's something almost reverent in the way he approaches, as if witnessing the birth of something terrible and beautiful. "Would you like me to carry it for you, then?"
"No." The refusal comes swift and certain. Xingqiu's gaze meets Zhongli's, and there's something ominous in his expression that makes Zhongli catch his breath. "But I wouldn't mind watching you burn for it."
For a heartbeat, the world narrows to just the two of them. Zhongli's lips part slightly, and when he speaks, his voice carries the weight of mountains and the heat of molten stone. "Then set the match, Young Master." His words are an offering, a surrender, a plea. "I am ever yours to ignite."

Yanqing is Jing Yuan’s guardian angel over the course of the Godslayer Protocol. Somehow, it feels unfair that a war criminal that’s decimated planets gets to have a guardian angel, but Yanqing can reconcile that. Maybe.
OR: Exploitation is such a nasty word, retaliation even worse, but Yanqing doesn’t know any others that can explain the last fifteen years.

Jing Yuan waits for him to continue, and they stand in an awkward silence for a moment as he realises that is the end of the statement. “Was he unhappy with your service?” Jing Yuan inclines, holding his hands behind his back and fiddling with his fingers.
Teng Xiao brings up a hand to pinch the bridge of his nose in a bizarre gesture of discomfort, and sighs. “No. For some reason, he believes that you are the current Arbiter-General of the Luofu.”

Yanqing dispels the illusion with a lazy wave of his hand. “Do you remember them?”
Jing Yuan can’t stop his cheeks from pulling a wry smile. “Too well.”
“That must be nice.” Yanqing leans over the bridge rail, but he never seems to fall. Even the one time he almost fell, Yanqing just flipped over and floated back to the edge before he could tumble into the crowds. “I wish I were more like you. I don’t remember anybody.”
“Haha.” Scalegorge is desolate today. It’s always desolate, but Jing Yuan can still see the waves kiss the shore from here, as they’ve always done, year after year. “You don’t want to be anything like me.”
Before Yanqing and Jing Yuan are family, they’re a general and a ghost on a bridge, unable to join the crowds below. Yanqing is a lonely kid with too much to say and no friends to endure him, and Jing Yuan is far too jaded and much too old for this.
…It becomes harder to make that excuse the longer they spend time together.
OR: comets are set alight when they brush by the sun, and there is nobody brighter in the universe than Jing Yuan.
