“What makes him your best client?” Kip asks.
“He’s nice, his dog is well behaved, the apartment is insane, and he has a very set schedule. It’s not a daily gig, it’s kind of random. You have to stay at his place in the Upper West Side a few times a week, but again, the apartment is amazing. He’s some kind of athlete? So the schedule is also nuts. But he gives, like, six months of dates in advance.” Maria answers.
A set schedule of dates works for Kip, who is, these days, trying to make his own schedule.
“And,” Maria smiles wide, “I think you’ll like him.”
That beatific expression will come back to him, five days later, when he meets Scott Hunter for the first time.

Kip Grady is a PhD student who takes a side-gig walking Scott Hunter's dog. Along the way: the precarity of academia vs hockey; keeping something good at arm's length despite an innate desire for safety and love; gratuitous metaphors about both.

Summary
It starts with a headache. Occasional twinges, sharp and pulsing. Nothing too bad. Nothing Scott hasn’t experienced before. He’s always been prone to migraines and tension headaches. A doctor who once prescribed him a sleeping aid joked he should frown less and smile more. Scott forced himself to laugh in reaction.

Scott is sick. He plans to deal with it alone, as usual. He doesn't plan to call Kip in the middle of the night. But it happens anyway. His feverish confessions lead to something Scott didn't dare to hope for.

"So, what's the plan, Golden Boy?" Scott asked, leaning back against the headrest, completely unbothered by Kip’s prickly demeanor. "You going to spend the whole flight glaring a hole through the fuselage, or are you going to accept that we're stuck together?"
"I prefer 'Golden Boy' to 'wall-crasher'," Kip shot back, a spark of genuine irritation finally overriding his exhaustion. "And for the record, figure skating requires precision, balance, and absolute control. It's an art form. Your sport requires a mouthguard and a high tolerance for concussions."
To Kip’s surprise, Scott didn't bristle. Instead, the corners of his mouth twitched, and a slow, devastating smile spread across his face. It fundamentally altered the hockey player's entire demeanor, erasing the stoic, intimidating aura and replacing it with something warm, incredibly charming, and deeply lethal.

The younger man said, "How're you feeling?" and reached his hand towards Scott's face.
On impulse, Scott pulled away from the touch. The young man paused for a brief moment before cupping Scott's jaw and stroking his thumb over his stubble.
"What're you—" Scott said while rolling his head away as far as the pain would let him.
The young man froze for a moment, the traces of relief in his expression quickly diminishing, and eventually retracted his hand.
"Scott, what's wrong?" the young man asked.
Scott's eyes flicked between his bedside guests. "Who— Who are you?"
