Summary
Set roughly two years after the end of Steven Universe Future, Steven has been driving around the country, putting some healthy emotional distance between himself and the gems, and experiencing the world like a regular human being- or at least, as close to it as he can manage. Our story begins as Steven finds himself in a crowded bar on New Year’s Eve somewhere outside the major port city of Yerba Buena, Tejas, when a couple at the bar decide to strike up a conversation with him… Will Steven be able to keep it together and make some new (human) friends, or will his anxiety get the better of him?
The first chapter is a short, self-contained story that was part of a planned, longer one, but I think this works well enough on its own that you can still enjoy it as a standalone short story.
Chapter 2+ was originally going to be the continuation, but since a new series has been announced, I have decided not to complete it. It was a fairly ambitious project, and I ultimately chose to spin aspects of it off into an original work as the word count piled up.
