Summary
Goro shuffles back onto his side of the bed—or what used to be his side, anyway. The whole bed is Ren's now. "I'm not forcing you into this, am I?"
"What?" Ren's voice is low and gruff and definitely guarded. "You're asking this now?"
"Just answer the question."
Ren pulls the pillow out from under Goro's head and shucks off the pillowcase. There's a wet spot on it from Goro's spit. "This is why we broke up," he says lightly.
Right. They broke up because they're both fundamentally incapable of being honest with themselves and each other. They get jealous. They self-sabotage. They play stupid games instead of communicating. They didn't even last a year, and now Goro has agonized over this for even longer than that. They're simply better when they're apart.
And still, somehow, every time he's in Ren's bed again, he cannot quite figure out how he ended up back here.

Crow gave a small wave. “No thank you. I’m picky about my coffee.”
“I know someone who also says they’re picky about their coffee. They say they don’t like sweets either, but I’ve been sneaking sugar in their coffee for the past week, and they told me that I’ve been making their coffee better than usual lately.” Joker twisted the cap off the cup and took a sip.
“Glad to know that you openly admit to poisoning people.”
“Yeah, and what are you gonna do about it? Arrest me?”

“So I’m to be bait,” Akechi says flatly. “You’re serving me up.”
Ren can feel the grin on his face, and he can’t stop it. “I gotta open the store tomorrow, I only serve coffee.”
“Absolutely idiotic. Why would I agree to that?"
Ren shrugs one shoulder and leans back against the movie theater wall, smiling. He’s feeling light on his feet right now. It’s been a bad day, but the end is nice. “Call it penance.”
“Penance for what,” Akechi says.
His smile stays where it is as he glances away for a moment, then meets Akechi’s eyes again. “Being yourself.”

Summer vacation back in Tokyo was supposed to be two things: an exciting break from the mundanity of home, and a chance to see people he's missed so much it hurts. If he survives, Ren has good news for himself on both.
