“He hasn't saved - you know what, never mind.” Occtis sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Julien has a particular set of people he’s very protective about. I happen to fall into that category because he needs me to get back at my family. That’s it.”

“Get back at your family.” Thimble repeats flatly. “The same family he let get away right now to burn himself for you?”

Or: Thimble realizes Julien isn't as nonchalant about Occtis as he'd like to claim. Whether or not *she* is, is absolutely besides the point

    Summary

A frustrating experience during a battle causes Julien and Occtis to reassess the argument that they had outside Obrimus Manor.

“What the fuck was that?” Julien’s voice was loud and clear and, most of all, more furious than Occtis had ever heard it before.

He grimaced slightly, but he wasn’t the one being yelled at, not this time, so he decided to take a few steps away from the group to begin the process of re-summoning Pin, who’d been destroyed in the battle.

“What was what?” Thimble asked, and she sounded genuinely confused. Human-sized again, and Occtis had almost gotten used to that. “Kattigan saved your life back there. Why are you so angry about it?”

It was an odd little reminder that Thimble hadn’t been along during Occtis’s trip with Julien to the old empire. She didn’t know Julien, not really. She knew some version of him that he’d been before his father had been murdered, but she didn’t know him now.

“I didn’t need any help,” Julien said, and Occtis could see him glaring around at the others. “I was fine.”

    Summary

Prince Aerion Targaryen was never meant to carry the child of a hedge knight.

Hidden beneath silks, spite, and dragon pride, Aerion endures a lonely pregnancy while Duncan the Tall wanders far from him beside Egg across the Seven Kingdoms. With his father pressing him toward noble matches and the court whispering behind his back, Aerion clings fiercely to the one thing that is truly his — the child growing beneath his heart.

But when labor comes too soon within the walls of the Red Keep, Duncan is nowhere to be found.

And after hours of blood, tears, and agony, Aerion finally brings his son into the world only for the impossible to happen:

The babe vanishes from his cradle before dawn.

Now, with grief poisoning the halls of the Red Keep and fear spreading through House Targaryen like wildfire, Aerion finds himself unraveling between love and rage, desperate to find the son stolen from his arms — and the man who promised he would never leave him alone.

    Summary

“What if you were right?” Occtis whispers.

    “I don’t think-” Julien starts.

“What if I'm not me? What if I'm not in control?” his voice breaks.

Julien doesn’t know how to fix it. There’s a strange ache in his chest as he watches Occtis caving in on himself. Julien has witnessed this with a few mentees in the Barrowguard, but teaching them a better stab or punch tends to set them right. He knows that won’t work with Occtis.

He decides that the truth may be what’s best. He probably can’t make this all any worse.

    Summary

    [Spoilers for C4E31.]

“You embarrassed me,” Occtis hisses. “You embarrassed me today.”

The boy is standing over the bed, gaze fixed on the mattress, seeing nothing as his clever mind fixates on some unknown fact of Julien’s prior conduct.

Julien tries to play the day’s hectic events back through his mind, but their flight from Dol-Makjar was a fearful one plagued by paranoia, so much so that he finds his recall hampered. He’s sure he was an asshole to everyone all day, but he doesn’t remember aiming it at Occtis, at least not on purpose.

Waiting for Occtis to volunteer information tends to involve more patience than Julien has handy, so he’d might as well ask. “When did I embarrass you?”

Occtis still doesn’t look at him. “You picked me up like a sack of grain in front of all of our colleagues.”

Of all the things to have a fight about right now, Julien feels like this isn’t the one he’d personally pick, and a stupid part of him wants to say so. An even stupider part of him wants to point out that that was last night, not today.

He manages to hold his tongue on these two points, but he can’t keep his ire from his tone. “What did you expect me to do? Leave you behind?”
