“Get out of here!” Abbot’s gruff voice rang out over a handful of trauma rooms to reach Brienne. “Morning’s in, and you’ve been here for ages.”
Brienne looked up from the monitor, and then down a little at Dr. Abbot, who had stopped speaking a few paces away from her. “Thank you, but I’m just finishing up these notes, and then there’s a young man with a laceration that needs stitches–”
“No, Tarth, I’m serious. Get going. Shoo.” Abbot shoved the air next to her, crowding her at the stand to budge her off. “I’m sure your charts are more than adequate,” he said, clearly referencing the many conversations they had had about Brienne’s extensive note taking, “And anyone could do those stitches."
Brienne Tarth has been working at Pittsburgh Medical Trauma Center for a few months when someone unexpected from her past shows up.

Matilda Hemmick is six years old, and her family has just moved again. Her mother says it will be the last time for a while, that they should be proud her father has received a promotion and a long term placement at the air base in Alameda. Matilda isn’t sure. They’ve moved every year that she’s been alive. Their longest stop was Hawaii, when she was very little and her brother had just been born. She didn’t remember much from there, just flashes of blue, blue sky and sea and a neighborhood dog that had let her pet him. Mother had wanted to “put down roots” and “enjoy the scenery” and Father had “had it with these damn locals” and “fucking sand everywhere, God damn it,” so he didn’t put in a request to stay.
