Lelouch gives up Zero for Suzaku's sake.

Kallen is having none of this BS.

    -+-

“Do you want to give up being Zero?” Diethard asked shrewdly, lifting his chin.

Unable to hide his flinch, Zero looked down and away from the army he’d built. From the army he was abandoning. “…I want to make my boyfriend happy.”

    Bookmarker's Notes

“‘As children, we all labor under the delusion that the world is a kind place. That our parents ultimately love us. That to some extent, the great tragedies of life happen to other, less fortunate, people. I had no such luxury. I was at the Kururugi shrine when I heard the first bombs hit. I remember general Tohdoh pulling us away in the dead of night, even as others argued my sister and I were better left dead or killed. I remember walking through the first war field, running from body to body with my sister on my back, fanatically searching for signs of life. The bodies were so mangled with debris they barely looked human. I remember thinking I was glad she was blind. My memories are raw and ragged, I can barely recall my futile attempt to dig a grave, scrambling at the dirt until my fingers were raw. I don’t recall who pulled me away. I do remember I lied to my sister, telling her I was just building an animal trap. That there was nothing to worry about. I remember my best friend at the time, Suzaku Kururugi, murdering his own father Genbu Kururugi in hopes it would stop the bloodshed. And most of all I remember wishing I could kill my father too, if only it would stop the fighting.’

‘Conquest is not the unfaltering march of progress. It’s unjustified slaughter! Walking through those fields, no one needed to tell me that this was wrong. No one needed to tell me that the Britannian government was the antithesis of everything right.’”

Y’all I’ve probably reread this speech like fifty times since I first found this fic, but every single time it still hits so hard: like oh my gosh I don’t know whether I want to sob or just sit in contemplation and awe, lmao.
