Outside of Riko, alphas still reigned supreme in the nest, and Jean learned, intimately, the suffering that befell omegas here. Riko wouldn't hesitate to induce a rut or heat if he saw fit, and he certainly would if he noticed that Nathaniel was living a lie.
When Jean met his eyes again, shock was painting his face, "I have another six months left, but he can't…"
Jean scoffed sardonically, "Can't what? He is the King. You think he does not have access to emergency heat inducers?" And it would be a heat, Jean thought, as he took in Nathaniel's form through new context.
He dropped the wrist he grabbed earlier, moving his hands to grip tightly at Nathaniel's tense shoulders, "You cannot let Riko know the truth. If he were to find out you are not the beta you say you are, it will have disastrous consequences for us both."
Jean barely stopped himself from shaking him, "It is a slight against his intelligence for you to lie, and he will not hesitate in his attempts to own you. Already he is planning for your transfer, you ignorant fool."
"Riko is the fool if he thinks I'll leave the foxes," Nathaniel spit out with a glare.
Jean shook him, "You will not have a choice."

Summary
The seconds tick steadily by. Andrew blinks slowly at the TV as a penguin falls off a craggy mountain. Neil drinks the water.
“This isn’t my shirt,” Neil notes several minutes later.
Andrew casts him a look, unimpressed by Neil’s subpar observational skills, as he should be. The black PSU t-shirt is soft and well-worn, stretched through the shoulders enough that the neck doesn’t creep up Neil’s collarbone to choke him out; there’s no mistaking it for one of Neil’s.
They sit, sagging deeper into the cushions as the documentary shifts from penguins to gazelles. Neil tries to understand the underlying theme of the show, but then it shifts to rainbow shrimp, and he gives up. He’s gotten better at picking his battles, he thinks
Neil dreams of Baltimore and wakes tacky and wrong. Andrew guides the pieces of him back together. They find peace in the in-between times of morning and night and take advantage of a suite with sleeping roommates.

“I don’t want to run,” Neil says at last. “And even if I did, where would I go? It takes a lot of work to become someone else, and I’m not exactly inconspicuous, what with—” he scoffs and gestures to his face as a whole “—all this. I like being Neil. I like being real.”
I like you, he doesn’t say, but it sits heavy on the wind regardless.
Andrew has deep-seated abandonment issues. Bee introduces some DBT concepts. Neil is restless; his PTSD shows itself in strange places but in predictable ways. They raise Andrew’s hackles whether he likes it or not. Recovery is a switchback country road.
The cats are a tether neither knew they needed.
