    Seventeen years ago Dalinar was drunk in a bar and made formal oaths to (under VERY specific circumstances) marry Lin Davar's daughter.

    And now those circumstances have been met and his poor choices have come back to bite him in the ass.

    Dalinar plans to honor the oath while keeping Shallan's virtue intact.

    But no plan survives contact with the enemy and Shallan's plans do not involve her dying a virgin.
