Summary
By August, Siegfried is becoming increasingly convinced that he has angered some kind of malevolent god, or maybe a local witch, although how he has no idea. Last week he’d seen a black cat loitering around the yard, and very nearly talked himself into believing it was a witch’s familiar sent to bring about enough chaos to ensure he never got the chance to get down on one knee. By ‘nearly talked himself into’, he meant ‘completely talked himself into’, before Audrey had reminded him that Dot Fawcett’s cat Frisk was being cared for by the Ingledews next door whilst Dot was away and that maybe threatening the poor thing with a broom wasn’t the best idea.
He is getting to the point where he thinks he might honestly just blurt it all out at the breakfast table with everyone watching, just to get the bloody thing done. But no, Audrey deserves the best. The best is proving somewhat illusive at present, admittedly, but he’s going to get there, even if it kills him. And, honestly, he’s beginning to think it might.
