George sat hesitantly on the bed, his damp hair clinging to his forehead. The sun had set outside the room, leaving behind a sky full of stars. Max was already back in Monaco, waiting for George to drive home. He’d flown to Italy after Singapore, thanks to a small mistranslation of flight numbers. He’d gotten a hotel for the night, after Max insisted that it wasn’t safe to be driving with jet lag in the middle of the night.
The room smelled wrong. It wasn’t home, and it certainly wasn’t a place George was comfortable in. The sheets were white, untouched, unbothered. The room was free of dust, free of personality. It felt like a quarantine box. He knew it wasn’t. He knew it would only be one night until he could launch himself into Max’s arms. But how was he supposed to come to terms with that?

People got lost here all the time. The place was a maze. Usually adults, looking to buy something illegal and ending up getting sold illegally instead. Kids were different. They cried and panicked. They, for sure, didn’t fight back.
And yet this one was.
He grabbed the kid and started walking, tugging him along without much thought. He didn’t know where he was going. Or why. He just knew he wanted to spend more time with him.
