Of course, he was not “okay”, this was why he had been ranting at quarter to four last night. A simple, “yeah, I’m good it was a rough night yesterday,” and they would never suspect anything. It was nice—to say the least—to be able to rant to someone.
Some days were worse than others though, like when the already grotesque thoughts became a level too extreme. People would then worry and maybe spend the day at his house. He knew they weren’t actually worried because they cared; they only wanted to make sure he didn’t do something stupid—it was bad for business.

think you are mistaking Japanese etiquette with Chinese etiquette. They would use their full names, specially in the case of very short names like Guang and Ling because it could be awkward, this is the most conventional way to refer to someone. In China is not really "first name" and "last name", but "given name" and "family name", and family names are for very formal contexts, like when interacting with much older people or authority figures: "Teacher (last name)", or how Captain Xiao calls Cheng Xiaoshi "Xiao Cheng" (little Cheng, Xiao in China is used similar to "-chan" in Japanese. Funny that his name already contains "Xiao"). Family names never go alone.Showing special closeness.
