He stares for too long at those eyes, sifting through them, but not for answers. He’s looking for nuggets of pyrite, little pieces of deception or faux affection. He finds nothing but pure, perfect gold. “What?”
“Your hands.” Turning Ling’s hand around so he can see, he runs a finger down the center line. “Your life-line is long. Longer than most people’s.”
“Life-line?”

Summary
Roy’s soul link manifests later than usual, and of course it’s fire coursing in his veins. He spends years waiting for the soulmate hot-headed enough to warrant this blessing-curse. When Roy’s tattoo finally reveals the moment that they meet… well, he’s not sure this is better than nothing.
In contrast, Ed’s link arrives at full strength. “A powerful smartass – great.” It ought to be obvious when he meets his match, except that a failed attempt to save his mother has already ruined his tattoo. Well, whatever – he has things to do, people to save, and zero time for romantic nonsense.
When the pair finally meets, sparks fly – or rather, they would if Roy wasn’t determined to keep Ed as safe and far away as possible. However, fate is patient, and it’s almost as stubborn as flame.

However, it is not an all-powerful art. As a science, there are natural principles in place. It is impossible to create something out of nothing. If one wishes to obtain something, something of equal value must be given. Only one thing can be created from something of a certain mass. This is the law of equivalent exchange, the basis of all alchemy. In accordance with this principle, there is a taboo among alchemists: Human transmutation is strictly forbidden. For what could equal the value of a Human soul?

“No. Not..” Edward sighed and laid back down, facing away. Ling was pushing his luck. The conversation made him feel strange. “I don’t see why it matters. It’s just a hypothetical. We have real things to worry about.”
Ling was silent for a long moment.
“...You’re right.”
Six years after the Promised Day, Edward Elric finds himself reading a letter on the train ride out of Aerugo. It's an invitation from Xing, sealed with the Emperor's seal, and signed by none other than Ling Yao. He had his doubts, especially after showing up two whole weeks late, but he was still looking forward to it.
He never imagined that in just five days, everything could crumble.

Once again, their father was praised for pulling some sort of miracles when he lived in Resembool. Edward scowled to himself, of course, if their jerk of a father hadn’t left, then maybe they wouldn’t be in this mess in the first place. Maybe he would have performed whatever the “miracle” everyone speaks of for his family. Then she wouldn’t die, she would be safe and they would be happy again. Just like it was before…when their Mother's smile was never forced. If Edward could just find him…he looked over to Alphonse who met his gaze and gave him a concerned look.

He expects something other than lost, frightened brown eyes flicking over him for a moment, or tiny bronze fingers curling into metal. He expects something other than thin, trembling shoulders wrapped loosely in torn, stained fabric or hollow cheeks. He expects something other than tears sliding down that tiny face and matted dark hair tossed in torn, snarled little curls, expects something other than soft little whimpers and a hoarse, pitiful cry of fright.
He expects something, anything other than a tiny, terrified child.
Or:
Roy Mustang ventures into the vents to exterminate a mouse. Instead he finds a small, frightened, very hurt child--a child banished from his home and forced to search for the very thing he's helping Edward Elric look for if he wants even a chance at returning. Instead, he finds himself with the sudden urge to cause a diplomatic incident with the emperor of Xing, and very little desire to let the desperate, lonely kid return somewhere that's only brought him pain and fear.
Instead, he finds himself adopting (another, some part of him mutters) the child, and can't bring himself to mind at all.

Ed had never read those near endless pages of his military contract. Of course, he hadn’t. He’d been seventeen years old and needed to put food on the table. He had wanted to see the world and get revenge. He hadn’t wanted to read the exact details of how much of himself he was giving away. He hadn’t known back then it wouldn’t be worth it. How could he have? They were meant to become heroes.
Eight years after the Ishvalan war and two years after the last government was overthrown, Ed gets a phone call from someone he never wants to hear from again. Mustang tells him of one last mission: to attend an official visit to Xing, where the new Emperor Ling Yao has asked for him by name.
