Darrow lived in Lykos, an underground colony devoted to the mining of helium-3. Born into a family of Red miners, becoming a Helldiver was all he expected from his future.
The boy had never held great expectations for his own life. He would become a Helldiver, win the Laurel for the Lambdas, marry at fifteen to a kind girl-someone like his childhood friend, Eo-and probably have two or three children. It was nothing extraordinary, but it was a good life for a Red... and hoping for anything more bordered on madness. Everyone knew how the hierarchy of the Society worked.
Yet his life takes an unexpected turn bedore he even turns fourteen. An accident strikes the mines, and everyone around him believes Darrow's life was lost beneath the rubble. But in the "afterlife," it is not his father waiting for him in the Vale. Instead, Darrow awakens to an entirely different reality.

Cassius Bellona, formerly Cassius Au Bellona, had made a hobby of exploring old music genres from before the fall of the American Empire. He didn’t think he was picky when it came to music but his favorite tunes were from the era known now as the rapid modernization era. The music was so dynamic and bright, and a remnant of a time where humans were still new to the first of many digital archives. He was especially a fan of the pop genre, though that wasn’t his exclusive taste.
As the captain of the Archi, he maintained sole rights to control the ship’s speakers, the exception being the personal quarters.

They propose a punishment to keep the peace: that a representative of the Golds, namely Cassius au Bellona, must fulfill the duties of a lowColor for a week.
To Darrow's chagrin, these duties include serving as the Reaper's personal Pink.
While Darrow very seriously agonizes over the ethics of this arrangement, Cassius vigorously carries out his sentence, educating Darrow in the realm of pleasure and stirring up unfamiliar feelings along the way.

His eyes turn in my direction, neck too stiff to fully look at me, and simultaneously it feels as if we have never spent a moment apart and as if eons have passed since I knew him. I am man and boy, brother and stranger, friend and enemy as I look at him. For a second I fear that he will not speak, that he cannot speak, that the sadistic bastard grinning smugly at us has cut out his tongue or sewn his mouth shut.
“Cassius,” Darrow says, and it is the happiest I have ever felt to hear another human being say my name. It is barely more than a whisper, and as he says it, his lower lip trembles and more tears begin tracking down his cheeks.
