The threat of being demoted to least favorite son, was not the incentive that Tanner needed to stick up for Jonathan. It was hard not to feel bad for Jonathan, when he was getting verbally flayed on top of having to anticipate his looming court date, and possibly a life in prison—but Tanner’s natural inclination was to look out for himself first.
