Curling her pink mouth over her glass, Olivier Mira Armstrong left a vibrant smudge of lipstick on the rim. “Being the aggressive one for once?”
“Sir,” Hawkeye continued in that matter-of-fact solemnity with its occasionally sardonic twinge that drove the general insane in the insolent respect and respectful insolence the timbre symbolised, “if you feel uncomfortable, we don’t have to, sir.”
Armstrong tipped her head back and downed the entirety of the glass. She felt, somehow, that she would need it. Then she regarded the thin-lipped blonde sniper seated across from her within the new light of a fifth or sixth layer of intoxication. “Dare.”

Ed blinks, lowering the physics textbook he’d been glowering at for the past several minutes—he’s noticed that one of the diagrams is technically incorrect and is considering the best plan of attack in fixing it—while Al taps his sketch pen on his chin. “You act like I go to Starbucks for anything other than stupid social gatherings I can’t get out of by sufficiently mouthing off.”
Standing in the doorway of the Elrics’ dorm, Winry glares. Her hand travels to her hip, and Al slides slowly off of the bed to take cover on the floor. “First up, I wasn’t talking to you. I know Al’s been running off in there twenty-five-eight with that new girlfriend of his.”

Tonight, she is alone.
The feeling isn’t new.
Snowflakes cling to the edges of her vision, washing away the darkness into fading white. Once upon a time she willingly stepped into the icy deluge, the frigid waters tearing her flesh from her skeleton to reveal a raging blizzard within. The manilla envelope containing her transfer unleashed the winds that swept over Drachma and pushed Amestris into a position of blood-smeared power over the mountain-daggers piercing the thin sky. The isolation comforted her, fed her, became her. In the summits her bones hardened to permafrost. Or so she thought.
Then the Promised Day drew her to the heat of power, to the heart of the volcano whose far-off spouts of ash and burning smoke she had seen from the peaks of her glaciers. The hardened permafrost had hidden away a consequence.
Brittle.
Brittle bones that appeared to glitter like immortal diamond but which snapped under the slightest pressure, under the lightest touch.

“Um,” said the mousy girl. Winry Rockbell glanced up at her. “C-could you turn the page, please?”
“Eh? Of your book? I guess.” Winry reached over. A handful of sentences caught her attention as she flipped: Something about two girls kissing. Her ears heated; she returned to staring at the automail illustrations. “What are you doing by yourself in the back, anyway?”
“O-oh.” The girl linked her hands together. Her pallid fingers were almost translucent in their paleness, as though her veins should have shown greenish-violet below the surface of her icy skin. “I just like b-being by myself is all.”
“Mind the company, then?”
The girl shook her head. “I like you,” she said quietly, hovering over each word. “You can stay.”

Despite the Qing Ming Festival yet months away in the spring past the new year, the huntsmen of the southern mountains celebrated the anniversaries of births rather than the anniversaries of deaths. And so Lan Fan, her tongue contorting into the shape of words whose meaning she had long lost but whose sound remained engraved in the annals of her childhood, inclined her head. Wisps of smoke mingling with the falling snow to coat the white expanse in droplets of grey. Smoke, for her grandfather, cremated and scattered to ride the wind, had no true grave. The huntsmen of the southern mountains carried their dead on their shoulders.

At the regional championship the other finalist is a girl maybe a metre high wearing more braids than Lan Fan thought physically possible and adorned with a massive pink sash in her hair that might actually weigh more than the girl herself. The symbol the slight pink girl has selected for herself—or the symbol that some well-meaning parent or coach picked out on the assumption that it would fit perfectly at a mixed martial art competition in which the girl has entered the category of karate—brings a smile to Lan Fan’s lips for the first time since the day opened and she and her grandfather discovered that the invitation hadn’t lied about the free food. A panda. A pink panda stitched into the back of the white gi in either a sardonic parody or a genuine emulation of pose from that obnoxious ubiquitous Karate Kid film.

At long length the Emperor called his fifty children to his inner chambers. “I am gravely ill,” he whispered, his voice hoarse, and his children had to lean forward to hear him. “I am gravely ill, and soon I may die.” His children wept. “But there is hope. Fetch me the divine fire of immortality, and the kingdom shall continue to prosper.”
