The tone, stripped of its usual lightness, feels like a fresh injury. Elliott squints, throwing up a trembling hand against the intrusive light. Of all people. The shame is worse than the ache in his bones. He wants to vanish.
Garreth’s questions tumble out, his voice rough with a fear that doesn’t bother hiding itself. “What happened? Did you fall? Are you hurt?”
Hurt? It’s a bitter understatement. The curse still lingers in his muscles, dull fire under his skin, exhaustion pressing in from all sides. He wants to reply, but his throat is raw, every thought scattered.
