Keller needs a distraction while Beecher is ignoring him. He knows eventually Beecher will relent and take him back. But until then, Alvarez will do. Alvarez has no idea what he's up against, but he does his best to hang on for the ride.

Series Timeline:

Alvarez Gets Blindsided takes place during Season Three. Beecher is plotting revenge against everyone involved in taking him down at the end of Season Two. Keller has apologized to him, and is just biding his time until Beecher comes around and realizes how much Keller really loves him. Alvarez is out of the hospital after his suicide attempt, and has been given a chance to stay out of Solitary if he'll join Sister Pete's Interaction Program. He's at a low point in his life, and is just ripe for Keller's schemes. Keller is frustrated by Beecher's attitude, and is looking for is a way to get his rocks off while he's waiting for Beecher to change his mind.
