It is ten in the morning when Xiao opens the apartment door. He toes off his shoes and slides them under the cabinet, taking care to place his keys into the bowl silently. He takes a moment to admire the swirling pattern on this one, before slowly closing the door. He latches the deadbolt and puts the chain into place. Tip-toeing past the living room, he deposits his bags on the kitchen counter and heads to the fridge.
Once upon a time, several years ago, he knew an alleyway. It was small, barren, and stank of food long rotten. The state of this fridge reminded him much of the same. It wasn’t even plugged into the socket.
