Summary
“I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” Red said at last, folding his arms. “You don’t- you aren’t yourself, with those batteries.”
Yellow furrowed his eyebrows, confused. “Yes I am,” he answered. “I’m me, but not stupid in the head.”
Red flinched backwards. The other two didn’t like it when Yellow brought up how slow he was, though they never hesitated to talk about to themselves. Maybe it was a family-lawyer clump thing.
“You’re fine the way you are,” Red argued, mouth twisted with unease. “This is the way it’s supposed to be.”
————
Yellow looks for batteries, Red doesn’t like it, and a teacher appears. An average day in an actual nightmare.

Summary
This was Yellow’s fault, that they were here. This was just supposed to be his nightmare, wasn’t it? But the other two were stuck here, all because of him.
“Promise,” Yellow said abruptly, eyes darting back to the house. All the noise and arguing and chaos fell silent around him, as though making room for his words. “You promise that when my batteries are out, they can go?”
Duck made a strangled noise, stepping forward, but Red quickly reached down and snagged him by the jacket.
Yellow had to do this alone.
———
The one in which a teacher gives them the way out - or at least, the way out for most of them.
What are they supposed to do?

Summary
“I don’t think that’s how our batteries work. You feel hungry, don’t you?” Yellow nodded, and Smart Yellow winced. “And you haven’t felt well before, when you missed a meal. That means you still need to eat, too.”
But there wasn’t enough food, not when the teacher took it all away. They all three had to share just a little, and his friends needed to eat more.
“That’s not how our batteries work,” Yellow repeated, as though committing it to memory. He met Smart Yellow’s gaze, hoping the other understood. “But those other two don’t know that, do they?”
———
When the new teacher is making the trio try ‘dieting’, there’s not enough food around. And Yellow realizes his batteries are the perfect excuse to not eat.
The only problem? He actually does need to eat, too.
Oh well. What the other two don’t know, won’t hurt them.

Summary
In that moment, three things happened.
First, Yellow, who fought for his life against the winged onslaught from Duck, threw the book behind his back. Making himself a shield between Duck and his target.
Second, Duck reached out and, with no book to snatch, settled on grabbing Yellow’s overalls. Fist locked on the fabric, Duck yanked, and the battery compartment Yellow was usually so protective of flew open.
And third, the batteries popped out. A combination of the force from Duck and Yellow’s movement, no doubt. The two little cylinders clattered to the floor and, with a three-person audience, rolled under the fridge.
“Oh,” Yellow said softly, like the sound had been punched out of him.
And then his knees gave out, crashing to the floor.
————
Or, the one in which Duck and Yellow are wrestling, and the batteries fly out under the fridge. Yellow’s afraid, but the other two will move Heaven and earth to get those batteries back for their friend.
