Summary
Bucky never wanted to fight in a war; he didn’t dream of the glory of the battlefield as a boy. If he had a choice, he’d want to live a normal life in peace that lasted all his life, but it wasn’t to be. As the fates would have it, the war came when he was just the right age for service, there was the letter telling his name had come up and here he is now. He knows this is a war that needs to be fought, needs to be won by the Allied forces, and he will do the best he can, he will try to get through this, and hopefully go home in the end.

There is the boredom of the long missions, but there is also camaraderie, joking in the group or just with Steve, sitting quiet around a campfire. Telling an outrageous joke and getting hip-checked so hard by Steve that he ends up falling in the river. In the end the whole group is stumbling out of the river dripping wet and barely able to stand because they’re all laughing so hard.

Summary
There’s another thread of memory, one that’s as broken as everything else, but isn’t made of pain and despair, even if it connects to those things sometimes. There are warm summer days and leaning on a steady shoulder by campfire, slender fingers holding a pen and blue eyes that are sometimes too bright with fever. There’s a voice that somehow stayed the same when almost everything changed.
There is a name, and it’s not his name. It’s more important than that.
Bucky tries to piece together the threads of memory that are something other than red with blood.
Steve tries to figure out how to be Steve Rogers in this new world where everyone knows his name and no one remembers what it meant before Captain America.
They are both looking for the same thing, really.

Summary
Here at home he can acknowledge it, can admit that the need to not let Steve out of his sight was all about him, about the need to make sure that Steve was still there, still breathing. And it hasn’t gone away. There was a moment where he had to confront again the truth that he might very well lose Steve one of these days. It’s an old fear, familiar since childhood, but it still stings, still leaves him scrambling in his own brain, trying to find some way to deal with it. At least these days he has more avenues to do so.
Finding new ways to deal with the post-battle jitters.
