Sam sat in the passenger seat, trying unsuccessfully to watch Steve without seeming creepy. Steve seemed perfectly willing to ignore the unspoken question, content to simply drive, so Sam took a deep breath.

“So...you wanna talk about it?”

Steve played dumb. “'Bout what?”

“'Even when you had nothing, you had Bucky.' Care to elaborate?”

Steve stayed silent for a moment. “Not really.”

Sam only waited a moment before adding, “I'd have to be blind not to see that he means a lot to you. Fighting him damn near killed you...and I'm not talking about the gunshot wounds to the torso. So whenever you want to talk about it...I'm right here.” He leaned his seat back just an inch and closed his eyes.

Steve allowed himself to believe that Sam wasn't really paying that much attention as he started talking.

“I met him in an alley in 1930.”
