Summary
Silence reigned between them. Outside there was the dull sound of training swords clashing and Jaskier turned his gaze towards the window, watching the sky outside.
“I’m-- sorry.” Geralt said. It sounded truly remorseful.
Jaskier took a deep breath and then tipped himself slightly to the side, pressing his shoulder against the witcher’s.
“I know.”

Summary
The earliest memory that Jaskier had of his name started in a busy room.
He couldn’t remember if it was all family or employees - or something else altogether. He could just picture the chaos, people bustling about, and Jaskier had to crane his head back to look up enough to see the faces around him.
He’d been barely old enough to start his lessons then, so when the snarl of his full name carried through the moving bodies, tears had sprung to his eyes - unable to be controlled.
“Julian Alfred Pankratz!”
His mother’s voice had been harsh and unforgiving.

Summary
The horse was pacing. In the moonlight, he truly looked the part of his name - a ghost among the living. He was light on his feet, too, and Jaskier tried to imagine a saddle on his back.
He couldn’t.
Jaskier took a few steps closer, lingering a couple of feet away from the fence. The gelding paused in his pacing to look at him, standing utterly still across the pen. He pawed at the ground suddenly, but when Jaskier didn’t speak or move he calmed.
They watched each other like that for a few minutes, just breathing.

Summary
“Just trust me.” Jaskier insisted as he hefted the thick pad up onto Pegasus’s back. The gelding shied away at first, but once the weight settled he heaved a huge sigh and stood still. His ears pinned back, but Jaskier could work with that. The horse might snap, but he wouldn’t actually land a bite unless he felt truly like he might get injured.
“I find that hard to do when you do things like this.” Geralt muttered from behind the fence as he watched Jaskier work.
“What? Brave things?” Jaskier teased, feeling rather optimistic about the proceedings so far. The horse had been warming up to all of them - albeit slowly. This was a leap, but one that Jaskier was prepared to take.

Summary
“You need to rest.” Geralt insisted, and Jaskier let himself be guided back down onto the mattress.
“She said I’m part of a bigger picture. That the game-- the game can’t be won without me toppling.” Jaskier echoed the words that had sent his skin prickling with chills.
Geralt’s arms tugged him into the witcher’s chest and Jaskier curled up against him, tucking his head under his chin, allowing himself to be held.
“I’ll keep you safe.” Geralt murmured against his hair.
“I don’t know if you can.” Jaskier whispered, voice small.
The witcher’s arms squeezed him tight.
