Summary
His was an unexpected kindness, in such a foreign place.
She woke on her back to soft pine earth and dappled sunlight. A clear mountain stream rushed nearby, the water parting before it crested over a break to either side of a buddha’s head, a piece of a fallen statue. Her body was still warm with the soft buzz of brunch Champagne. Tipsy enough, perhaps, not to question her circumstances.
She wondered often, in the years that followed, if her fate would have been different had she lingered on that strip of sunlit path. Perhaps she would have found her way to the base of the mountain rather than its peak, found a village and lived a quiet life.
But she did not linger, did not know to, and that was not her fate. -

Summary
This is the third installment of a series I started nearly 10 years ago.
I want to say you could totally read this fic without reading the other 2. However, this is a direct continuation of cannon changes I made in the previous fics. I have stuck as close as I could to what happened in GMW and basically filled the Shawn gaps that they left there. Some chapters include more episode content than others, but I tried to only use scenes that I needed to in order to add the Shawn angst. There's more about dating Katy, actually staying in touch with Mr. Turner, and what Shawn had to go through to overcome his trauma in order to let himself find a family and become a father.
This started as a prompt someone sent me 4 years ago, the idea of a continuation where Riley and Maya see Shawn's scars and he has to explain. I never had the time to follow through. But once I started, it became more than what anyone actually asked for.
I will try to add specific trigger warnings on each chapter, but please know, this is a story of Shawn returning to the Matthews after years of struggling with alcoholism, self-harm, depression, and suicidal ideation. There are discussions about those issues. Luckily he's got a therapist nowSeries
