Chapter 1: Arrival

Chapter Text

Fíli sighed as he stepped out of the car, stretching his legs after a seven-hour drive. Shockingly enough, their beat-up old car had survived the trip. Kíli, on the other hand, was snoring softly in the passenger seat, his stubbled cheek pressed against the window as his breath fogged up the glass.  Fíli chuckled to himself and walked over to the passenger door, slapping the glass to wake his brother.

"The fuck, Fee! I was sleepin'!" Kíli mumbled as he rubbed his eyes. "Where are we?"

"We're in Toronto. New York is just across the border," Fíli explained, "but I figured we both could use some rest this time, instead of you snoring up a storm while I drive all day."

"I do NOT snore!" Kíli huffed. "YOU snore. I have no idea what you're even talking about." He ran a hand through his mussed brown hair in a pitiful attempt to make himself look decent, only succeeding in messing it up even further.

"Ah, just shut up and help me with the luggage. I've got a hotel booked for the night. Let's go. And don't forget your hairbrush, either."  Fíli chuckled.

"Yeah, fuck you very much," Kíli snorted as he dragged his suitcase across the parking lot, the plastic wheels scraping across the pavement.

They walked into the lobby, Kíli plunking down into a stiff armchair and Fíli approaching the front desk.

"Name?" the receptionist asked, smacking her lips as she chewed her gum noisily.

"Durinson. Fíli and Kíli Durinson. We have a room booked for tonight."

The girl made a few clicks on the computer and nodded. Handing Fíli the key card to room 208, she smiled. "Married, huh?" she asked, gesturing to Kíli who was currently strumming his hands on his thighs impatiently.

Fíli blushed fiercely. "Heh, no...tha-that's my brother..." he laughed nervously.

The girl's eyes widened. "Oh," she exclaimed. "My apologies."
