"I can see Miria-chan!" Mai exclaimed excitedly, pointing out of the front window of the car to where she had spotted her friend. She had been looking forward to this day, so she wobbled up and down excitedly on her seat. "Don't get too excited," her mother warned her. It was another warm Saturday in summer, not too hot but also warm enough to play outside without any worries. The girls had decided to get together and spend a night at one of the many cottages Momoka's family owned. At first, some of their parents had been opposed to the idea. And so, reluctantly, the parents who were against leaving their girls alone had agreed to letting them spend the night together. The girls had been rather happy with the decision. But they would have to make sure they wouldn't just eat candy and head to bed at a reasonable time. It was still just a regular weekend, so all of them had school the following Monday.
Once all of that had been settled, they had quickly gotten to work on coming up with ideas for what to do. The cottage was by a lake, so they all could look forward to taking a swim. "Good morning," Mai returned the greeting as she pulled out of the hug. Looking at her friend, Mai realized that Miria was in rather casual clothes. She hadn't been sure what to wear, so she had chosen to wear one of her dresses. Which, as it turned out, had probably been the right choice, given that it was warm and they would probably spend a lot of time playing outside.
"Here is your bag, Miria," Miria's mother then spoke up to get the girls' attention, handing Miria her bag from the trunk of the car. "Thank you, Mama," Miria replied with a bright smile. She had been just as excited as Mai and also was looking forward to the two days of fun she would be spending with her friends. "And here is yours," Mai's mother said, handing Mai her own bag.
The woman then turned her attention to Miria's mother, immediately starting to chat about whatever crossed her mind. Just like their daughters, the women had gotten quite close. After all, they often met while waiting to pick up the girls after practice. And while they didn't share all their interests, they all loved cheering on their children. So, to prevent getting stuck with their parents, Mai quickly hugged her mother, pulling the woman out of her conversation. "See you tomorrow, Mama," Mai said with a smile. "See you tomorrow. Have fun," her mother replied, ruffling through her hair. "You too, Miria," Miria's mother echoed before waving at the two girls. And before the two of them had even rounded the corner of the cottage, their mothers had already gone back to chatting.
Leaving their mothers at the front of the cottage, Miria and Mai walked around the cottage on the right to get to the deck. Momoka had told them in advance that they should simply come to the back. There was a bell, but since they were planning to play outside, they might not hear it. Following the path, it only took a moment before they were able to make out the lake at the end of the lawn.
A sandy beach stretched along the shore, with a pier jutting out into the calm lake. The lake itself was mostly surrounded by trees. There were a few other buildings lining the opposite shore, but for the most part, they would be alone. Down at the beach, Mai and Miria were already able to make out Kaoru and Nina. Clearly, the two girls had arrived ahead of them.
As they rounded the second corner, they could hear glasses clinking from their left. Looking up at the deck, they immediately spotted Momoka, who was busy putting down glasses on the table, shaded by a large parasol. The cottage had two floors, with the second floor only stretching across half the building. The other half, the one they were currently in, was open across both floors, with large windows facing the lake, away from the small road leading up to the cottage. There was also a hallway leading to the front of the cottage on the left, which also connected to the bathroom.
In the middle on the right, a small staircase went up to the second floor. The loft was a single open space, with a wooden banister at the edge allowing anyone to look down into the living room. Exchanging a glance, Miria and Mai understood that they would be sleeping on the upper floor, so with quick steps they ascended the stairs. Arriving on the second floor, they were greeted by two rows of futons on Japanese tatami. Having a tatami floor in a modern cottage might be a little unusual, but that's what you can get when you're rich.
There were already multiple bags on the sides, presumably the ones Kaoru, Nina, and Momoka had brought. But when it came to getting ready, their priorities were a little different. While Mai started to unpack a few things she would need from her bag, Miria immediately started to take off her clothes.
