She stormed into his dorm room in Caliban Hall while he was mid-conversation with both Xavier and Bianca. It was the day after Prank Day.
“You know, I thought Prank Day was meant for harmless things, like actual pranks,” Enid folded her arms. “Bruno’s allergic to bug-bites,”
She was met with three bewildered stares. Ranging from saddened to confused to defensive.
“No-Xavier,” Ajax stopped his friend before Xavier could say anything, already looking hostile. “Just…go. I need to talk to Enid anyway.”
Bianca and Xavier both brushed past Enid as they went, Bianca herself giving the blonde a once-over.
“I saw you with Eugene and Wednesday’s brother. Did you tell him to call those bugs on Bruno? Tell him to say sorry.” She angrily said.
“You’ve barely spoken to me in months and you come in here all of a sudden over something I didn’t do?” Ajax asked, one of his snakes sliding down from his beanie to flicker its tongue.
“I saw you laughing,” Enid accused. She stepped closer, her claws flicking out as she balled her fists.
Ajax’s heart sank. The last time her claws had come out when they were together was when they were sharing popcorn over a bad movie and making out instead. He hadn’t expected this.
Not from her.
“Enid…” Ajax shook his head. “It was Prank Day. And I got my ass handed to me as well that day. Nobody even went near you.” He protested. “Why are you so worked up over Bruno?”
She stepped back a little. “Because that’s what girlfriends do for their–”
She covered her mouth.
“I didn’t mean–he’s not exactly my-” She twiddled her fingers.
Ajax had to sit down on his bed to avoid a migraine.
“You didn’t even tell me that we were over, Enid. You just ghosted me.” He said, wringing out his hands before he looked at her, his dark obsidian-like eyes filled with emotion. “And now I come back, and you have a new guy you’re fooling around with. Not just that, but you’re an entirely different person.”
“I changed.” She supplied, smoothing down her uniform.
“Well, you could’ve told me,” Ajax fired back, before wincing. “Sorry. I don’t–I shouldn’t yell. It’s not..”
He sighed again.
“Enid, just…if you’d told me you were changing…if you’d bothered…I could’ve been there with you while you did. I could’ve done that and then have fallen even more hopelessly in love.”
The werewolf girl winced at the word love.
“Was I just a crutch for you to use while you were waiting to wolf out?” He desperately asked, taking Enid’s arms.
Enid’s face burned, and she looked at the floor instead, not quite pulling away. Her claws flickered in and out against the blazer of his uniform, a nervous habit he remembered from the old her.
There was still a hint of blood-orange jam in a line on her neck, presumably from yesterday. He could smell it all around her like perfume.
“I did have feelings for you. For a long time. Since our freshman year.” Enid answered slowly, hesitantly. “But I wolfed out. And I was done chasing after someone who didn’t like me for me. Bruno is-”
“But I did like you for you!” Ajax shook his head, letting go of her arms.
She shook herself out.
“I just…look.” Enid wiped her eyes, and Ajax’s eyes widened.
“Shit–no, no, I’m sorry, wolf girl,” Ajax blurted, and she sniffled loudly at the old nickname he used, still wiping her eyes with her sleeve.
“I’m just–I’m gonna go, okay? I need a minute.” Enid sobbed, not even bothering to compose herself before she left, the door of Ajax’s room swinging open.
Ajax gazed after her, still steeling himself not to cry too.
