“You think there are other versions of us out there,” Sapphire asks Ruby one night. They’re tying out this human custom Greg kept on mentioning-date nights.
It had been odd at the start. After years and years of being one person, choosing to exist separately feels a bit wrong. But, Sapphire can see her lover’s face and hold her hands, and look on with pride at the other gem. Right now, as they lay on the roof of the barn under a starry night sky, Sapphire cannot believe how happy she is right now.
Ruby blinks at her. “What do you mean?”
”Just a thought,” said Sapphire. “This one life we have can’t be the only one. Imagine this-we would still be gems but still live on Homeworld as a fusion.”
Ruby scoffs at the idea. “Oh, sure,” she muttered, sitting up to face the blue gem. “That sounds fun.”
”Or we life in another world where I’m from a very posh society and you’re from a rough life. You would get into fights, but maybe I’d have a weapon. Like a gun.”
”Now you’re talking.”
”Or we would be royalty like in the human books. Or we would meet in high school. Or somewhere in the mountains. Or we would be gems who never met-“
Two hands land on her shoulder. “Okay,” chirped Ruby. “I’m gonna’ kiss you so that you don’t spiral.”
”What-“
And then they’re falling into each other, and it’s pure and light and sparkles and frosting-a rush of sweetness-and Garnet steps out into the world, laughing with pure delight.
