Notes:

one important note prior to diving into this audio experience: there are sections of dialogue throughout this fic that are in Russian or French - in the original, these are denoted by italics and written in English. for this audio adaptation, i thought a lot about how to best represent this with some kind of auditory marker. what i landed on was a combination of a background tone + slight reverb on the dialogue that is in either language. the background tones will be different from Russian to French, but context (and character POV) should hopefully make it clear which language is being spoken in these scenes.

the way i consumed this story was, frankly, unhealthy. i saw it recommended on threads and downloaded it to my kindle right then. it was a tuesday at 2pm, i was at work, and in a meeting. at ~200k words, this is not a tuesday evening read. not with a 9pm bedtime and a dog to walk and a 6am alarm on Wednesday morning. but, that's fine, i told myself. i have self control. i can wait. i can leave it untouched until the weekend when i'll be able to devote the time it deserved without interruption. dear friends: i did not wait. "i'll just sample the first chapter" i told myself, settling in. "just the first five chapters," i amended immediately. "i'll get 25% in," i conceded. at 11:34pm i was 82% through and knew in my heart that there was no stopping.

i am aggressively defensive of my sleep quality. i do not fuck around with my protected sleep time. y'all... this fic was worth fucking around for.

i actually had to physically restrain myself the next day after work when my brain suggested i start it over again. nyet. i knew, already, that i'd be making this podfic. i knew i'd be teaching myself how to modulate an EQ graph to make dialogue sound like it was coming through a telephone connection to do justice to this fic.

i wasn't prepared for how intense the editing process was going to be to make this sound the way i'd heard it in my mind. apologies for how slow the updates are coming and will likely continue to come. this one hour file took close to nine hours of editing! i'm learning so much about the process and having a lot of fun doing this. i had too much fun and so much struggle trying to find the exact right prop effects for Chapter 7. thanks for taking the time to listen and comment :)

okay folks, we're properly into it now!! a few notes on the audio you'll hear in these conversations.

so, both Dima and Shane are using voice changing apps. i've decided to only apply these filters to the person who is on the other end of the line. so when we're in Shane's POV, you'll hear his voice unaltered, but you'll hear Dima's voice through Dima's voice app and the phone line filter. when we're in Dima's POV, you'll hear his voice unchanged, with Shane's voice coming through his voice app and the phone line filter.

there's also some text (not spoken dialogue) that's written in Russian; you'll hear that Russian tone again under those sections as a cue.
