Chapter Text
The Bellagio’s opulence was far from subtle; it was a sensory assault designed to numb all rationality. Beneath the vaulted ceiling of the main lobby, where thousands of Chihuly blown-glass flowers floated like a colony of colorful jellyfish frozen in time, Kim Taehyung sought anonymity. The air inside smelled of expensive carpeting, sweet cigar smoke, imported perfumes, and the unmistakable, metallic tang of billions of dollars changing hands every second.
It was a Friday night—the absolute peak of Las Vegas delirium. For Taehyung, however, this spectacle of golden lights and ephemeral laughter was nothing more than a smokescreen, a temporary shield against the suffocating reality awaiting him on the other side of the Pacific.
Strolling with his hands casually slipped into the pockets of his tailored trousers, he tried to shake off the ghosts that had boarded the flight from Seoul alongside him.
But the human mind is an efficient trap. A familiar—yet relentless—voice pierced through his thoughts:
"Taehyung, we need to decide on the cake flavor by Monday without fail. The French vanilla with berries is the most elegant, but the Jangs prefer something traditional."
He closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, almost catching the scent of rare orchids his mother always exuded whenever she hosted an event.
"And the floral arrangements, darling? You still haven't approved the options for the reception. The white tulips need to be ordered in advance from Holland. You don't want to seem uninterested, do you?"
A heavy sigh escaped Taehyung's lips. He lingered near a blackjack table, pretending to watch the game, though his gaze remained fixed on empty space.
Ever since the official engagement announcement had been published in the high-society columns of South Korea, his existence had been reduced to a checklist of bureaucratic and cosmetic chores. Aesthetic details meant to mask the raw reality of a business transaction.
The marriage had nothing to do with affection, devotion, or compatibility; it was corporate engineering, a merger of conglomerates sealed with platinum bands. The groom's name, Jang Jun-seo, evoked absolutely nothing in his chest. Jun-seo was a polished man, educated in the fashion of the European elite, perfectly suited for newspaper photographs and terribly hollow. He wasn't a partner; he was merely an ink signature on a contract Taehyung had never wanted to sign.
Soon, his father's image materialized in his mind, replacing his mother's voice. The Kim patriarch was a man whose presence commanded entire rooms without him ever needing to raise his voice—rigid, impeccably postured, with a cold gaze that calculated the net worth of everyone around him.
"Love is a luxury, Taehyung. And luxuries are inherently dangerous for those with an empire to govern."
The paternal maxim echoed like a life sentence. That single phrase had shaped him since adolescence, teaching him to lock his own expectations away in a dark vault. And perhaps that was precisely why he was here, crossing the plush carpet of a Nevada casino, thousands of miles from home.
He needed room to breathe without the constant surveillance of handlers, without the weight of dynastic obligations, without the guilt of not being the perfect heir who would sacrifice his own soul for the growth of stock prices.
When he had gathered his family in the Seoul library years ago to come out, Taehyung had expected a storm. He had braced himself for confrontation, for dishonor, perhaps even banishment. The weight on his shoulders had felt ready to fracture. Yet, his parents' reaction had been the worst kind of torture: pragmatic indifference.
"Don't worry, son," his father had remarked, without so much as tearing his eyes away from the financial reports on his tablet. "This doesn't change our plans. Dynastic marriages have accommodated private arrangements for centuries. Just ensure that discretion remains your absolute priority."
They had accepted his identity not out of love or understanding, but because they steadfastly refused to give up their heir.
Las Vegas, then, was his final, desperate act of silent rebellion, a brief intermission before the gates of that golden cage swung shut for good.
He needed to forget, to erase the immediate future, even if the illusion lasted for only a single night.
Taehyung continued his drift through the hall, the flashing neon of the slot machines reflecting in his irises. The uninhibited laughter of tourists with nothing to lose but a few dollars offered a stark contrast to the calculated, oppressive silence of Seoul gala dinners. Here, chaos reigned supreme.
As he veered toward the more secluded lounge areas, Taehyung noticed the stares. He wasn't naive; he knew exactly the kind of magnetism he possessed. The impeccably tailored suit—a matte silk that hugged his broad shoulders—the slight golden tan of his skin under the warm lighting, and the minimalist smirk playing at the corner of his lips were an explicit visual invitation. Men at baccarat tables and women holding champagne flutes discreetly turned their heads as he glided past. It was a calculated provocation, a reminder to himself that no matter which side he chose to play on, the attraction was entirely mutual.
It was at the intersection between the high-traffic floor and the main bar that the physical world collided with his thoughts. A broad, solid shoulder slammed into his. The sudden impact sent Taehyung reeling sideways, his balance stolen by the element of surprise. Before his mind could fully register the impending humiliation of a tumble onto the polished marble, a firm, immediate force intercepted him.
Large hands, with long fingers and a resolute grip, clamped around his waist. The catch was precise, steadying him with an almost insulting ease.
Taehyung's body was pulled forward, colliding flush against a stranger's chest. The impact revealed a solid, well-defined frame radiating a palpable physical warmth and an undercurrent of imminent danger. The space between them vanished. Taehyung's nose caught the stranger's scent: a complex blend of sandalwood, premium leather, and the crisp edge of high-grade tobacco.
Taehyung lifted his gaze slowly, taking in the man's face. He was tall, forcing the Kim heir to tilt his head slightly back. Messy black hair fell over his forehead, framing features chiseled with a sharp masculinity. But it was the eyes that arrested his attention: dark, deep, and intense orbs that seemed to drink in all the golden light of the casino and reflect it back as pure defiance.
The man didn't offer an immediate apology. Instead, a slow smirk curled his well-defined lips—an expression dripping with self-assurance and a hint of amused mockery.
"I'm going to need a bucket of water if you keep staring at me like that," the stranger murmured. His voice was a husky baritone, vibrating against the chest still pressed flush to Taehyung's—a sound steeped in a casual, dangerous sensuality.
Taehyung blinked rapidly, his heart hammering against his ribs—a purely instinctive reaction to the physical proximity and the man's sheer audacity. He cleared his throat, scrambling to recover the aristocratic composure that had been momentarily shattered.
"I-I'm sorry!" Taehyung's voice faltered slightly at first, but he quickly steadied it as he took a firm step back, breaking the physical contact—though the warmth of those hands still felt branded onto the fabric of his suit. "I wasn't watching where I was going. Thank you for averting a disaster."
"No thanks necessary," the man replied, keeping his eyes locked onto Taehyung's while tilting his head in a minimalist, charming nod. "But if you insist on being grateful... you could reward me by having a drink with me. What do you say?"
Taehyung hesitated. In his mind, safety protocols and years of cultivated prudence whispered that he should decline, turn his back, and retreat to the secure isolation of his hotel room. But the man's gaze was a gravitational force; it was unwavering, packed with genuine curiosity and a veiled promise of unpredictability.
He was in Vegas. The place where rules went to die. Why on earth would he say no?
"All right," he responded with a restrained smile. "Kim Taehyung."
"Jeon Jungkook," the man introduced himself, executing a subtle, theatrical bow—an amusing contrast to his imposing stature that coaxed a genuine, light laugh from Taehyung's lips. "Shall we?"
They moved toward the circular counter of the central bar, an oasis of blue neon light and gleaming crystal decanters. They claimed two high leather barstools side by side. Physical proximity continued to dictate the rhythm of their interaction; Jungkook's arm occasionally brushed against Taehyung's, a contact that seemed to shoot small electric currents right beneath the Kim heir's skin.
"What's your pleasure?" Jungkook asked, turning his torso partially toward Taehyung, propping an elbow on the dark marble counter.
"What does the gentleman suggest?" Taehyung countered. He rested his chin in the palm of his right hand, arching a perfectly groomed eyebrow. The movement was seamless, an innate blend of elegance and flirtation that openly challenged the control Jungkook displayed.
Jungkook's smirk widened, his eyes flashing with the amusement of the game.
"Very well."
Jungkook summoned the bartender with an almost imperceptible flick of his finger. When she approached, he leaned forward and murmured a few words directly into her ear. Taehyung studied the man's profile—the sharp jawline, the curve of his lips. There was a military precision blended into that Las Vegas swagger.
A few minutes later, the bartender returned, setting two tall glasses on the counter. The drink exhibited a stunning chromatic transition, bleeding from a vibrant orange-yellow at the base to a deep ruby-red at the top, perfectly mimicking the palette of a desert sunset. A fresh orange slice garnished the rim, accompanied by a black straw and a tiny, multicolored paper umbrella that added an almost ironic touch of tropical kitsch to the luxurious environment.
"Try it," Jungkook ordered softly, lifting his own glass and taking a long sip without breaking eye contact with his companion.
Taehyung complied. He leaned in, capturing the straw between his lips. As he drew the liquid up, the cocktail's complexity caught him off guard. The initial kick of premium vodka was instantly softened by the dense sweetness of peach schnapps, followed by the refreshing, citric tartness of orange juice. The alcohol slipped down his throat, leaving a smooth, comforting, and warm burn in its wake.
Taehyung's eyes widened slightly, a flash of pure, childlike delight that he rarely permitted himself to show.
"How have I never tasted this before?!" He let out a melodic laugh, the sound cutting through the bar's low hum as he immediately took another sip. "This is absolutely wonderful!"
Jungkook tracked every movement with a rapt, predatory attention. He ran the tip of his tongue over his own lips, wetting them as his gaze embarked on a deliberate trajectory. It swept down from Taehyung's laughter, anchored onto the lips flushed red from the drink, traced the line of his jaw, and lingered on the prominent collarbone exposed by two undone buttons of his red silk shirt. Every millimeter of the Kim heir's posture felt like an exquisite provocation. And Jungkook, as a rule of life, was a man who loved giving in to good provocations.
"So, what's the name of this masterpiece?" Taehyung asked, swirling the straw in his glass, which was already half empty.
"Sex on the Beach," Jungkook replied. He leaned back against the leather backrest of his stool, crossing his arms. A dangerous, magnetic smirk played at the corners of his mouth, entirely devoid of shyness. "Which is exactly how our night is going to end... except in my bed."
The sheer audacity of the declaration was so blatant that Taehyung threw his head back and laughed out loud. The movement completely exposed the long, vulnerable line of his throat under the bar lights—a visual invitation that caused Jungkook's gaze to darken further with a coiled hunger.
"You are unbelievably bold and conceited, you know that?" Taehyung said, bringing his head back down, trying to catch his breath as he wiped an imaginary tear from the corner of his eye. "Do you truly think I'm going to jump into bed with you just because you bought me a drink and kept me from making a fool of myself on the casino floor?"
"I get absolutely everything I want, Taehyunnie," the younger man teased, lowering his voice as he drew out the syllables of the nickname with an audible, suggestive purr.
Before Taehyung could process the use of the intimate pet name, Jungkook's hand slid up the side of his leg. The man's fingers splayed across Taehyung's thigh, over the thin fabric of his trousers. The touch was light, but the pressure was calculated, warm and firm, staking a claim on the territory.
An electric, violent shiver shot up Taehyung's spine, the heat of Jungkook's palm sending his heart rate skyrocketing. The desire humming between them was a physical force, palpable and tempting. For a fleeting second, the idea of surrendering to this single night and forgetting Seoul felt like the only logical choice. However, Kim Taehyung's pride and the rigid control he had fought so hard to maintain won out.
With a swift, elegant motion, Taehyung brought his hand down to Jungkook's wrist, prying the man's fingers from his thigh firmly, yet without violence. Then, he leaned forward.
The distance between them evaporated once more. Their faces hovered scant inches apart, close enough for Taehyung to feel Jungkook's warm breath—tasting of peach and alcohol—against his skin. He locked eyes with the younger man's dilated pupils, holding the fierce intensity of a gaze that usually unraveled anyone else.
A slow, enigmatic, and victorious smile spread across Taehyung's lips.
"I regret to inform you, Mr. Jeon... but tonight is going to be your very first exception."
With an audacity that rivaled the other man's, Taehyung lifted his free hand and tapped Jungkook's cheek twice, a light, almost condescending pat.
He rose from the stool in a single, fluid motion, smoothing out the lines of his silk suit. Without another word, Taehyung spun on his heel and sauntered toward the lounge exit. He didn't look back.
Jungkook remained frozen on the barstool for a few seconds. His hand still hovered in the empty space where Taehyung's thigh had been. His confident smirk dissolved slowly, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated disbelief. He blinked, watching the elegant silhouette of the Kim heir vanish into the casino crowd.
Nobody rejected him. Never. That was a universal rule in Jeon Jungkook's world.
He ran a hand through his hair, tugging the dark strands back as a new kind of smile—broader this time, predatory and genuinely fascinated—bloomed across his face. The Las Vegas night, which had promised to be just another monotonous distraction, had just become the most thrilling hunt of his life.
