Notes:

this was originally a 500-word fic i wasn't too satisfied with, but i played with my original idea and reworked it until this came out. the I still don't feel like i've completely done it justice, but i like ango too much to let it remain unpublished. i hope you enjoy it!

Work Text:

Ango Sakaguchi

Age 22

An agent for the Special Division for Unusual Powers, and a spy infiltrated within the Port Mafia in Yokohama and Mimic in Europe. Despite being loyal to the Special Division, his main work currently lies within the Port Mafia as an informant who attends meetings and negotiations which he always sums up within a report. His duties also include writing files on the deceased members of the organization, but that is not a task formally appointed by its Boss.

The reason for that is archival purposes: just like in any other organization, deaths within the Port Mafia are inevitable, and with the help of his skill, Discourse on Decadence, Sakaguchi always analyzes the personal objects of the victims to write up small obituaries, or investigates on his own when they are not available.

He does not have quarters of his own, but meetings with him can be arranged on rainy days on certain back alleys marked in the map stored alongside this document. Please keep in mind his status as an undercover agent and do not contact him unless absolutely necessary and after getting the corresponding approval from Chief Taneda.

His official working hours are 7 AM to 6 PM, but he might not always be able to be contacted with as per his previously recorded status.

“Say, Ango, have you ever written a file on yourself?”

“Excuse me?”

“What it says on the tin. The ones you showed us were interesting.”

“I second that. I’m sure they’d make for a good writing exercise…”

“You think I do this for fun? Also, I thought I was clear, but I’ve only written reports on dead people before.”

“It’s not like Mori orders you to do it. Also, maybe it’s time for a change of pace!”

“... That much is true.”

“...”

“...”

“...”

“So?”

“... I might come up with something, but I’ve been busy. Please don’t get your hopes up.”

“Yay! Too late! I’m already excited!”

“Show us once you’re done.”

His duties also include writing files on the deceased members of the organization, but that was not a task formally appointed by its Boss.

The reason for that, which he gives out after being asked constantly if there is a point to it, because of course there is or otherwise he wouldn’t be doing it, is archival purposes: just like in any other organization, deaths within the Port Mafia are inevitable, and with the help of his skill, Discourse on Decadence, Sakaguchi always analyzes the personal objects of the victims to write up small obituaries, or investigates on his own when they are not available because most people think it’s a waste of time, when the real waste of time is living an austere life with nothing to prove you’ve lived it.

He does not have quarters of his own (so much for hating austerity…), but meetings with him can be arranged on rainy days on certain back alleys marked in the map stored alongside this document. Please keep in mind his status as an undercover agent and do not contact him unless absolutely necessary and after getting the corresponding approval from Chief Taneda. You can also occasionally find him in Ginza at an establishment named Bar Lupin, usually in the company of two other Mafia members.

His official working hours are 7 AM to 6 PM whenever he’s needed; he’s always up pulling all-nighters and working, anyway, but he might not always be able to be contacted with as per his previously recorded status.

“Did you ever write that report on yourself?”

“I did not. I tried, but I wasn’t convinced with the result.”

“Oh? And why’s that?”

“... I’m not sure. Perhaps it’s just difficult to write about oneself.”

“Ooh, then can we help out?”

“Ango is too serious for his own good! He ought to spend more time out drinking with us instead of staying inside that stuffy office. Actually competent at your job, unlike others in the Mafia…”

“Ango is a responsible person, and always makes sure to bring others back on track if needed. All in all, good friend and capable informant whom I want to spend more time with.”

Ango

Age irrelevant

A contradictory person whose tiring life led him to two individuals worth meeting. They describe him as serious and responsible, and is often the one to stop their antics whenever they get out of hand. But just as he keeps them in check, they also make sure he’s enjoying himself and avoiding his self imposed tiring and exhausting life.

It was also thanks to them that he found a place worth discovering, somewhere nights move faster than any day he’d ever lived and where conversations flow as if secrets didn’t exist and happiness was just as easy to reach as it looked.

He wishes he could spend more time with them.

“Sakaguchi speaking.”

(...)

“Yes, everything proceeded as planned.”

(...)

“No, it won’t be necessary. I’m unharmed.”

(...)

“...  ‘I sound hurt’... It’s likely because I’m still adjusting to… going back to my original position.”

(...)

“Thank you. I will be arriving shortly.”

But he can’t do that now, because he betrayed them, because he was a traitor and was never meant nor allowed to be happy in the first place. He’s only destined to do the things he hates, and to never have something to call his own. He hates overworking, yet always stays up late. Hates pulling all-nighters, yet he can’t remember the last time he got seven hours of sleep. Hates betrayal, yet he went through it in a heartbeat. He doesn’t have living quarters of his own, and the few locations he frequented barely had anything beyond a bed that went unused, a desk covered in dust and a perfectly-balanced chair. He is his own exception to his love of austerity, the exception that proves the rule, and it was his responsibility to embody it, to report and archive lives while his own was wasted away, devoid of meaning and freedom and all the things he was promised. He can’t even write his own file properly: he doesn’t know what he cares enough about to record, what to leave out and what to rewrite. But that doesn’t matter, because he’s not part of the Mafia anymore. The one burden he’d been willing to bear had been lifted off his shoulders, against his will.

He wished he had been able to spend more time with them.

Ango woke up with a jolt, messing up some of the papers in his desk as he moved around, trying to remember when and what he’d been doing when he fell asleep. Yet the only thing he recalled was the dream he’d just woken up from — he’d been writing records on dead agents again, so it was probably about his time in the Port Mafia. The specific details were too vague for him to recall, but he figured there was no point in trying to make note of it within his mind.

As his eyes adjusted again to the brightness of the screen in front of him, Ango became aware of the headache forming and centering around his forehead. He didn’t know whether it was from lack of sleep, hunger, too much work or all of the above. All he wanted was to go back to sleep, so he supposed that was the main cause. He shook his head, disappointed. That wouldn’t do. He had more reports to write up, after all. Happiness had long since been out of reach for him.

… But as the Special Division had started working more often with other organizations (as opposed to working against them), such as the Armed Detective Agency… he supposed he wasn’t as far gone as he initially believed. He would never dare to cross off the label of traitor from his file, but…

… Huh? What file? What label? What was he supposed to cross off?

Ango sighed. He really was sleep deprived. If sleep overtook him again at some point during the night… he supposed he wouldn’t be too against that.
