Chapter 1: On the Night's Watch

Chapter Text

The Night's Watch Rangers functions a bit like Canadian Mounties. Because their remit mainly includes monsters - sometimes shaped like men, by their definition - they also take up wider law enforcement. Because they profess to own nothing like the Knights Templar, they also do banking and escorting caravans of a sort. Because they do so much already, they also run a university of sorts in partnership with House Stark, 'cause that's how Tobirama functions. It gets a strange rep - sort of like the Stark private army, but also a separate order that just ends up pulled into various branches.

It tries to stay meritocratic, and since the Konoha definition implies at least a veneer of effort thereof at discretion or proof of ability beforehand, blatant land-grabs like Runcel Hightower tend to end up inside the Wall as another brick within it.

The Wall was still built (and it was a pretty uphill argument between the first Bran the Builder and all the tribes of First Men then) but the castles serve more like customs checkpoints and castle towns - with accompanying trades. There are still violent chieftains and vagrants nonconformists everywhere, but finding a King Beyond the Wall willing to take on an immortal lord commander able to solo armies himself... well, even free folk north of the wall have more common sense than that, and those who let any special abilities get to their head are culled once they try raiding near the Wall.

The side effect it held, was that all the rivalling tribes of First Men immediately had a leader everyone could respect with cutting-edge knowledge and a willingness to spread it above and below the Wall (and probably elements of the Will of Fire that underruns so much of Naruto). So when the Andals came with violence and colonialist intentions it was slapped out pretty quickly, which led to the intermarrying-proselytizing phase a bit earlier - though it quickly ran into issues explaining Tobirama's... everything.

The Faith's claims about wights staying away from men of faith were tested - such as yeeting a wight at one of the Septons - and found very wanting, and the Winterlands managed to develop social structures and customs that accounted for the sociological-political roles that Church-analogues would play in a medieval-Europe society, so there would be a much franker difference of societal perspective above and below the Neck.

More details pending. Hope this helps.

The Gift

'The Gift' in this AU refers to the land area twenty-five leagues above and below the Wall subject to Watch law enforcement. As the Watch holds the only lordship within this area, it is also a safe haven for marriages without giving up first night. The Gift serves as a free trading zone overland on both coasts. All legal persons entering the Gift are subject to Watch law enforcement (this means Free Folk, Winterlanders, giants, Children of the Forest etc).
