Chapter 1: The little vampire's lament

Chapter Text

The night was warm and two siblings made their way down the street. A older boy gripped his sister's hand, very tightly. The child tried to speak but he hushed her. They had to be quick, as they didn't want their relatives to hear them. The younger sister was dressed in a black dress with a white collar. Black Mary Janes clicked as her brother pulled her from the house.

"Brother," she whispered.

"silence, mira." he spat back. Footsteps were heard from the alley. Mira was frozen and her brother gripped her hand tightly. A man in a black coat held a weapon to his side. A Hunter? Mira knew of them. But only horror stories.

Her brother glanced down at her, "we'll move when he's no longer in the area. But I need you to be quiet little sister."
Mira knew to follow her older brother's orders. Lest- she want the hunter's weapon through her throat. Would they slaughter a child? Little Mira knew they wouldn't hold back skewering her. So she stood by his side.

Once the hunter passed. Mira noticed something about the patrolling warrior. Two blades where in their holsters. The sound of a bell jiggled. A fringe was in their face. The boy's judgment was wrong. The fierce hunter that passed her and her brother. Was a woman.

The woman was out of site. But mira's brother didn't want to wait any longer. What if the woman came back. He didn't want to know what would become of his little sister. The two made their way down the street. Cars were heard from the main street. Mira walked closely by her brother.

The two siblings came to an abandoned church. Her brother opened the door, it was still lit. So maybe it wasn't all the way abandoned.

Mira played in the church pews. Her brother sat on the other side and he watched his sister's enjoyment. That's what he wanted to see. Mira did cartwheels. Until she got hungry. "Brother, I'm hungry." Mira grumbled.

The boy got up, "I'll go see what's lingering." He watched a rat scurry across. He pointed it out and mira was disgusted. "eww, why don't we drink the blood. Mommy, use to give us."

Her brother rubbed his temples, "Mira, you know we can't do that."

"why not?" she questioned. Her brother sighed, "you really make things difficult." The boy hovered over the rat. "Are you going to kill it?"

"I'm not going to befriend it. If that's what your thinking." The boy picked up the rat and tried to squeeze his head. Mira didn't love the sight or the squeak.

"stop!" Mira yelled. Her brother dropped the critter, the rat scurried away. Mira's brother sucked his teeth.

"now what are you going to eat?"
He was right but Mira didn't want to bring harm to an animal. "Maybe I should go to that convenience store and get us something." the boy suggested.

"the one mommy said sold disgusting human food?" the child reminded him. Her brother gritted his teeth. He didn't want to hear anything surrounding their mother.

"Besides they sell those egg sandwiches you like,"

Mira's mouth watered. She love the taste of the sandwiches. When her brother would go on hunts with the others. He would always bring them back. Mira would sank her little baby fangs into them.

Oh was the little redhead filled with delight when she consumed them. Those moments bought joy to her. "Please big brother," she yanked at the boys shirt.

He chuckled, "Alright, but stay nice and quiet."

Mira zipped her lips and her brother made his way to the door. Once the heavy door slammed. Mira paced through the church pews. As the little vampire had the zoomies.

Though the rinky church wasn't like the chapel at her family's residence. It did do it's best as a play area for the child. Mira grew bored and twiddle her thumbs. Then she heard the door open, it was her brother. She shot up in excitement and then she saw the hunter from before.

The little girl's heart beat against her chest. She ducked down and hid away. The hunter caught a glimpse prior. Then she rubbed her eyes.

"Thought I saw a kid. Now my mind is playing tricks on me. I wish my partner took night patrol seriously." the woman grumbled. Mira crouched down and hid in the gap on the pew. The footsteps grew louder. Mira covered her mouth.

The woman came close to the vampire's hiding spot. She sighed, "I remember when this church was functional. But that was during my prime."

Mira examined her from below. The woman's hair was black and she was adorned in it as well. Her pants were tight and a norigae hung from her belt. She had on combat boots that were stained with grime and caked with dirt. Her top half was covered by a coat. The woman continued her walk down the aisle.

Then she found a church pew to sit down in.
She laid back and her hat came undone. To Mira's surprise.

Fox ears? The hunter who invaded her space. Was a Gumiho.

The gumiho let out a yawn and her fangs poked out.

A gumiho is a hunter? Mira never knew other creatures could join the force. But what was this force? Her parents hated them and told her that they were a group of humans. Who seek to annihilate other ghouls. But the very thing that went against this group. Was sitting in front of her.

Then mira heard snoring. The child found this funny until the snoring grew louder. Then it was annoying. Mira got out from her hiding spot and decided to look at the woman. She wanted a closer look.

Mira crept up to her and didn't want to make any noise. Besides the creaking floor beneath her. Then she remembered, she could float. Why didn't she do that before?

Mira loomed over the sleeping woman. The woman looked to be in her late 20s though her face was beginning to crack. Must be stress- A bit of gray was beginning to form in her fringe. Mira studied her extraordinary visitor.

The woman's eyes slowly began to open. Mira had to hide fast. Or those blades would be through her little body.

She hid behind the golden statue. The woman's eyes shot open. "I felt a presence in here." The woman stretched as she got up. Mira peered from behind the golden statue. She watched her guest pick up and dust her hat off.

The woman did have a bit of beauty but at the end of the day. She was hardened from her work. Then she turned her head and Mira went back behind the Madonna.

"My mind keeps playing tricks with me. Let me go home before I imagine magpie's singing songs." The poor woman grunted.

The door slammed, this indicted the exhausted woman had left. Now Mira was left alone. Her stomach growled.

"what's taking him so long." she complained. Her brother was taking his precious time and Mira's stomach acid was eating at her lining. Then the door swung open. He stood in the doorway with a 7'eleven bag in hand.

Mira ran to her brother. He almost fell but held his footing. "hey, you almost caused me to fall!" he fussed. Then he heard Mira's sniffling and look down to see tears pouring down her face.

"Mir," he cooed. He rubbed her back.
He placed the bag down and pulled a handkerchief out his pocket. The boy wiped her tears from her face. "Nothing is ever going to hurt me." he said, proudly.

Her brother was great when it came to blood hunts but he had a bit of cockiness to him. This cockiness led him to having a metal stake through his heart. That's what little Mira was scared of.

What would she do without her brother? How would she be able to manage in the human world. He was still in front of her and Mira rather not dream of hypotheticals. As these thoughts were too much for the undead child.

"let's eat before our sandwiches get soggy." he reminded her of their food.

"Okay brother." she replied. The boy dug out of the bag and handed their food out. Mira wolfed down the food. Her brother paid no mind to his sister's large appetite. If anything he was happy.

This church would be their new home. They wouldn't have to deal with their parents, especially their mother.

2 years later

Mira walked down the street. Humans holding shopping bags and doing their dallies walked beside her. None paid any attention to the fact that she was holding an umbrella. Or how she was dressed.

They just thought Mira was a young cosplayer. A little girl complimented her clothes which consisted of a black dress and white stockings. She wore black laced boots. A older woman stopped her.

I hope she just has something to say to me and that's it, Mira gripped the umbrella.

"You remind me of my daughter. She does those little cosplays."

Thank the lord, she thinks I'm a cosplayer. The preteen was relieved. Mira's brother told her to be wary of others. As hunters could be lurking every corner or an opposing faction.

Dealing with hunters was fine because they could outsmart them. But since she learned of opposing groups thanks to her dear brother. She had to be diligent traversing around Seoul.

The lady who spoke to her was harmless and she bid Mira farewell. Mira grew tired- not only from the heat. But from walking. Floating was more her thing. But did she want to risk getting caught by a human? No.

So she walked herself back to the church. No floating, a rule her brother gave her. Her rebellious spirit wanted to float. But the thought of metal stake quelled the spirit.

As Mira approached the door, it was left ajar. Her brother made sure to shut the door behind him every time. Mira slowly pushed the door back. Then she saw something.

Her umbrella slipped from her hands. She fell to her knees. Purple and red flames illuminated where a lifeless body laid.

Her brother's head was smashed into the ground. His brain matter smothered on the velvet floor. Mira crawled close to him. Tears slid down her cheeks but a name was ascribed on the floor.

"gwi-" before mira could read out the name. She felt something behind her. The girl rolled out the way and club came down on her brother's body. Crushing the rest of it. Her attacker was a demon.

Mira knew of demons. Demons did not abide by anyone, they only knew carnage and had the highest blood lust. They were like animals. But just like an animal they could be tamed.

Mira grabbed her umbrella and pressed on button on it's handle. The umbrella turned to a staff. God bless her brother for stealing this from their mother. She swung the staff at her pursuer. Knocking him on his feet.

"oh so the little bat wants to tangle," the demon said. He got up and held his club. The demon was a hefty one. His clothes consisted of white polo shirt and khakis. Mira pondered if the creature had got off from work.

She engage in battle with the creature. Smacking him in the stomach with the blunt part. The demons laughed, "It's all muscle here, girly."

Mira didn't like his teasing. she turned the staff around and jabbed him with the sharp part. Nailing him through. She kicked the blunt part and the demon was nailed into the wall. The creature sputtered out bile.

Mira made her way to him. "who sent you here?" she questioned.
"My boss," he choked.

Now the demon was being a smart ass and this irked Mira. "I said who sent you!"

The demon opened his mouth and large sickle sliced through his head. She didn't get her answer. But this meant, someone else was also present. Mira turned her head and was met with someone familiar.

"You,"
It was the woman who came to the church those years back. Her fringe was sprinkled with more gray. Mira thought the look was cool.

The woman came to examine her. She looked Mira up and down. Checking from any scratches or bruises. "Are you okay, little girl." a bit of concerned in her voice.

Mira was close to finding out who sent the man who murdered her brother. But the gumiho's sickle was in his head. "I was so close." she dropped to her knees. The woman glanced at the minced mash that was once Mira's brother. and then at Mira.

She helped Mira up, "Come with me."

"and do what." Mira snapped. The gumiho saw her Mira's fangs and nails that were sharper than the average girls'.

"are you a?" The woman was surprised.

"a vampire? Yes. If you have a metal stake you can use it." Mira's voice cracked. Now she had no one to run to but this unknown woman.

Would she go with this lady or stay here with what's left of her brother. Mira's choices weren't the best but then a idea roused in her mind.

"I'll go with you," she said.

The woman smiled, "I'm glad."

"But on one condition, you help me find who did this." Mira added.

Mira pointed to demon who was skewered by her weapon and her guardian's sickle.
The woman sighed, "Well if that's the case. You might need a new weapon."

Mira knew what this meant, "I'm not joining your organization. If that's what you're thinking,"

"How am I going to help you. If you don't want to fully work with me." the gumiho said.

Mira sucked her teeth, "fine."

The woman had won this one. She looked down at little Mira. She reminds me of my little girl.

Mira went to gather her things. The woman saw three large trunks. When her brother was still alive, he showered Mira with gifts. And the woman wasn't looking forward to carrying these gifts.

"also, what's your name?" Mira asked.

"Celine." The woman introduced herself.

"Well, Celine can you carry my clothes." Mira demanded. Celine's eyes twitched but she had to remain professional. "Yes, little one."
