Chisaki knew that Mers had ridiculous healing abilities but he’d watched Dabi’s tattoos closely. The scales been fine for a couple months, and while fading, he could proudly say he was the first person to tattoo a Mer that he knew of.
Entering their bathroom, Chisaki was fully intent on soaking with Dabi when the change happened.
A warbled giggle was the only warning before Dabi leapt at him from the massive tub he commissioned for them. He watched in slow motion, expecting a crushing death, as his pearlescent purple and white scales gave way to pale legs.
“What the fuck –”
Instead of being crushed under several hundred pounds of fish, Chisaki was pinned to floor by Dabi’s human form.
“Ow.”
Looking up from the floor to see a shockingly pale Dabi, Chisaki was a bit heartbroken. “It didn’t stick…” his eyes flitted over Dabi’s shoulders while the Mer twisted this way and that. “That’s a shame.”
They really had been lovely, he thought, “I’m sorry.”
Dripping wet and shaking slightly as the shift took energy, Dabi dropped back onto Chisaki. He held him for a few moments while staring at the walls of their bathroom.
Then, after coming to a completely different conclusion than Chisaki, he asked, “Can you do it again?”
Chisaki startled. “What?”
“The tattoos, could you do them again? They were nice,” he whispered, “and I’m okay with sitting for a while. You’re usually the one asking me for breaks.” Dabi buried his face in his neck.
A teasing bite on his neck had him coughing. “You want me to do the same ones?”
Dabi hummed, sending pulsing vibrations down the length of Chisaki’s neck and chasing away any ideas he’d had coming into the bath.
“You can something new, they won’t beat the real ones.”
