Between Fangs and Logic

Summary:

A cheetah Omega losing control is dangerous.

A fox Alpha choosing restraint is worse.

When Loki’s heat hits at the wrong time, everything he’s built starts to crack. Hugo sees it, understands it and refuses to cross a line without permission.

Chapter Text

Julian Loki didn’t remember dreaming—he only remembered the heat from last night.

It wasn’t a normal heat, not like waking up wrapped in blankets or with the sun hitting his face.

It was something deeper, more internal, as if his own body.. were functioning on a rhythm he didn’t recognize.

He opened his eyes slowly.

The bedroom ceiling reflected back a still, calm image—completely detached from what he was feeling.

He blinked several times, his breathing came out a little heavier than usual, and that was the first thing that alerted him.

It didn’t fit.

Nothing fit in that moment.

He swallowed, immediately noticing the dryness in his throat. His tongue felt clumsier, as if every sensation was amplified… or disordered.

He shifted slightly beneath the sheets—a grave mistake.

The brush of fabric against his skin sent a small shiver down his entire spine, all the way to the base of his tail.

He froze, his cheetah tail—normally relaxed in sleep—had tensed without him noticing. The tip flicked slightly, restless, as if it were reacting before his own mind could.

“.. No.” he whispered, his voice coming out low, rougher than usual.

Another sign.

His brow furrowed automatically. Loki wasn’t someone who panicked easily. His mind always came first—he analyzed, observed, understood.

But this—

This wasn’t giving him time.

He closed his eyes for a second, forcing himself to breathe slower.

It didn’t work.

The air still felt heavy as it entered his lungs, as if it weren’t enough.

As if he needed more.. something he couldn’t name.

And then he noticed it.

The heat wasn’t only in his chest. It was moving downward, spreading further and further through his body.

“Agh.. No.” he murmured, running a hand over his forehead, wiping away sweat.

He felt feverish, unbearably hot despite not being sick.

He pushed himself upright abruptly, ignoring how his body protested the sudden movement.

His hands pressed against the bed, fingers digging into the sheets as if he needed to anchor himself to something physical.

He thought for a moment, eyes half-lidded, trying to focus.

His cycles.

That was it.

But.. why now?

He always kept track of them. He wasn’t careless about that—he couldn’t afford to be, not with a team full of alphas, not with daily training, not with—

No.

It wasn’t supposed to happen now.

He still had days left.

He knew it.

He had calculated it.

His jaw tightened.

So.. why now?

His tail moved again, faster this time, betraying the unease he was trying to keep off his face.

He ran a hand over his face, trying to organize his thoughts, which were already starting to fall apart faster than he liked to admit.

He was one of the few Omegas on the team, and that was dangerous.

𝙏𝙤𝙤 dangerous.

He tried to regulate his breathing, lifting his head and inhaling slowly, but—

His body went rigid again, but this time it was different.

His room smelled different.

Not strong, not yet. But there was something—something subtle, almost imperceptible if you didn’t know what to look for.

It was faint, but hard to ignore.

That scent drifted through the air, clinging to his body, slipping into his breathing without permission.

Pheromones weren’t just a smell—they were presence, they were an 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘶𝘭𝘴𝘦.

They were that invisible pull that was starting to drag him toward something he didn’t want to name.

His tail moved faster, lightly hitting the sheets, his ears tensing.

And his breathing—

was becoming more and more uneven.

“Shit..” he gritted his teeth.

If he could smell it,

then the 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘴 could too.

That thought made his chest tighten even more, along with his abdomen.

He stood up abruptly again, but this time his balance faltered slightly.

He didn’t fall, but he had to steady himself against the wall.

The silence in the room became unbearable.

Julian lowered his gaze, as if that alone could let him escape the reality that was already settling into his body.

He walked straight to his sports bag, opened it, and searched through the various things inside.

He found the bottle of suppressants; it felt colder in his hand than he expected.

That barely calmed him, but it was a point of logic in the middle of the chaos.

At least that was something good.

“Finally..” he whispered, more to himself than anything else.

He took one out, looked at it for a second. And without hesitating further, he swallowed it immediately.

“It’s fine... it’ll pass.” He tried to convince himself, even as his legs were already trembling.

He stayed still for a few seconds, standing beside his bed, still breathing a little deeper than normal, but... stable.

It was manageable—that was the most important thing.

Control.

The heat was still there, yes, but it was more manageable.

He ran a hand over his collarbone, barely brushing it, feeling his skin warmer than usual, but not unbearable.

He had trained in worse conditions, had pushed his body to its limits before.

This wouldn’t be different, it 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙𝙣'𝙩 𝙗𝙚.

By the time he left the bedroom, he had already built a routine in his head.

- Don’t think too much.
- Don’t interact more than necessary.
- Avoid unnecessary contact.
- Focus on training and finish it properly.

It was easy.

The morning air felt different, much colder than usual.

Or maybe he was just too warm.

It didn’t matter.

He walked toward the field with a firm step, his arms awkwardly held slightly away from his body, his tail moving in a low, controlled, almost mechanical rhythm.

He needed to avoid all kinds of physical contact—even his own skin brushing against itself sent shivers through his entire body.

Training started like any other.

Warm-up, basic movements, controlling his breathing along with the rhythm.

And for a moment, Loki thought he was right.

That the suppressant had done its job, that everything would stay within something tolerable.

Until one of the alphas on the team turned his head.

It was subtle, almost imperceptible.

But Loki felt it immediately.

It wasn’t just any look—it was 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣.

Automatic instinct.

The body always reacted before the mind.

It caused a small pull in his chest, a slight shift in his breathing.

He decided not to worry—at least not yet.

He kept moving, ignoring the others.

After all, that was the right thing to do—not give it importance.

Not let it grow.

During one of the many drills, one of the Alphas approached Loki from behind, lightly touching one of his shoulders.

The Omega felt it instantly, turned halfway around, and struck the other’s arm.

“Idiot! Why the hell are you touching me!?” he snapped, frowning.

“Loki.” That tone of voice put him on alert.

His coach.

“Focus.” he added before the dark-skinned man could defend himself.

“I am focused, coach.” he replied, sighing as he tried to return to his previous rhythm.

After that, Julian understood.

It wasn’t just that they were noticing him—he was noticing them more than usual too.

Every presence around him became sharper, more defined. His jaw tightened.

That wasn’t normal.

The suppressant should’ve dulled that, should’ve shut that part down.

The next drill started.

It was about speed.

His ground, his safe zone.

Where everything else stopped mattering.

His first sprint was perfect, the second even faster.

But the third… the world didn’t keep up.

His breathing faltered slightly, a second out of sync with his steps.

Nothing serious—but it was enough for the heat to start rising again.

It didn’t hit all at once. It was worse than that.
It was gradual, insistent in its presence.

As if the suppressant had never been there.

His tail tensed further, his ears twitching slightly.

And this time it wasn’t just a single glance—it was several, much more direct than before.

Julian slowed down slightly.

The scent.

Shit.

It was stronger now.

Much stronger.

And it wasn’t contained.

It was leaking.

His chest tightened.

“Fuck..” he whispered, almost inaudible.

He tried another sprint, much faster this time.

As if he could force his body to align.

But it didn’t work—if anything, it made it worse.

With every step he took, the situation deteriorated.

The heat rose, his breathing broke, the stares became more obvious.

..Then he felt it.

Not just any stare.

That one.

That steadier, closer stare.

Hugo Vivian.

He didn’t need to turn to know—it was in the way his body reacted differently.

Under that alpha’s gaze, he felt more… exposed.

But that wasn’t the worst part.

The worst part was—

Hugo wasn’t doing anything about it.

Julian clenched his teeth as he wiped the sweat from his temple.

If he noticed, then why the hell wasn’t he stepping in?

Why wasn’t he saying anything? Why wasn’t he—

His rhythm broke again, this time far more obvious.

Irrecoverable.

He stopped abruptly, nearly losing his balance again.

“Loki.” The coach’s voice came firm, expecting an explanation.

But Julian didn’t give one—he didn’t even turn to look.

He just took a step back, then another, and left.

He didn’t run, didn’t do anything that would draw more attention than necessary.

But his pace was fast, as if every second there was too much.

The field fell behind. The voices too.

If only the scent had as well.

The open air gave way to more enclosed hallways, colder.. but not enough.

Only when he turned into an empty corridor did the omega stop.

His hands pressed against the wall, his head dropping automatically.

He tried to breathe, but it was useless.

His tail moved restlessly behind him, more out of control now that no one was watching.

“Shit..” he muttered through clenched teeth.

The suppressant hadn’t done anything—it had failed right when he needed it most.

Suddenly—

Footsteps.

Behind him.

Unhurried.

Julian didn’t turn around.

“Don’t follow me.” His voice came out low, but not weak. Not yet.

The footsteps didn’t stop—of course they didn’t.

“Stop. Now.” They sounded even closer.

Loki pressed his fingers harder against the wall.

“I already stopped,” Vivian replied. “Just not in «that» way.”

That made the Omega finally turn, meeting his gaze briefly.

“What do you want?”

Vivian looked as he always did—posture straight, expression neutral, eyes analyzing him like usual.

But that wasn’t true.

Loki noticed it immediately, in the smallest details.

In how his fox tail wasn’t relaxed, in how his gaze didn’t waver for even a second.

In how—

He was taking everything in.

“Your performance dropped abruptly,” Hugo said, as if delivering a report. “Your breathing rate is irregular and—”

“Shut up.” The response came out faster than he expected.

The silence that followed was different.

Hugo didn’t react right away, just watched him, processing.

“Your suppressants failed,” he added, just as direct. No softening, no attempt to ease it.

The omega felt something tighten in his chest again.

It was anger, too much embarrassment, and anxiety.

All mixed together.

“Stay out of it.”

“I’m already in it.” He took another step forward—not to invade, but closing the distance between them even more.

Julian’s body reacted instantly, his breathing growing more uneven.

And he was about to lose his clarity.

“Then do something, you stupid alpha,” Loki snapped, his voice more strained now. “Or are you just going to stand there like a fucking idiot?”

Vivian tilted his head slightly, as if evaluating the question.
As if he were actually considering it.

“If I act.. it’s not reversible.” Julian went still.

He hadn’t expected that.. answer.

“What..?”

“There’s no partial intervention in this situation,” Hugo continued. “You know that.”

Of course he knew—that was the worst part.

The air between them grew heavier, much more charged.

Loki swallowed.

“Then don’t do anything.” The contradiction hung between them; they both understood it.

“I’m not touching you because you’re avoiding it.” Julian let out a short laugh.

“Oh, really?”

“Yes.” He took another step. “But not because you don’t need it.”

“..If you’re not going to do it,” he murmured, quieter now, “then let me go.”

“No.”

Julian felt something in his chest tighten further—it wasn’t just the heat.

It was the need he was trying to hide.

He needed an alpha.

Every part of him was craving to be 𝘧𝘶𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘥.

Vivian took another step, and this time he left no space.

Julian swallowed, his body reacting again, betraying him—his hips tilted forward slightly without him fully deciding to.

He hated that.

He hated not having control.

“Don’t.. get so close,” he murmured, though he didn’t do anything to push him away.

The contradiction lingered.

Hugo noticed how Julian’s hips had moved closer; his eyes didn’t leave that area for even a second.

“If it makes you uncomfortable..” he said at last, low, “I’ll stop.” Julian frowned.

“What..?”

“I won’t do anything you don’t want.” His tone remained flat, but the weight of his words didn’t. “Not without your consent.”

Julian’s heart pounded harder.

And that irritated him.

His frown deepened.

“Are you.. fucking kidding me?” he snapped, his voice sharper, more strained than he intended.

Hugo didn’t react immediately—that only made it worse.

“Seriously..” Julian continued, letting out a short, humorless laugh. “Now you’re acting considerate?”

His grip on Hugo’s clothes tightened, contradictory—desperate and irritated at the same time.

“You’re an 𝘼𝙡𝙥𝙝𝙖.” He spat the word like an insult. “Don’t give me that 𝙗𝙪𝙡𝙡𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙩.”

The air between them shifted—but not because of the heat.

Hugo looked at him more seriously this time.

“That.. isn’t an argument.” he replied. Loki clicked his tongue.

“Of course it is.” His breathing was still uneven, his body still reacting, but now there was something else mixed in. “I know how you work. You don’t need to pretend with me.”

Vivian didn’t move, but something in his expression changed slightly.

“I’m not.. pretending.” The omega let out another short laugh.

“Yeah, right. You think I’m going to believe that shit?”

“Julian.”

His name, again.

But this time—

different.

That made him fall silent for a second.

“If I didn’t want to control myself.. I wouldn’t be asking.”

The dark-skinned man swallowed, his ears lowering slightly. His body was still reacting to the heat, to the closeness.. but now there was something else pushing from within.

Something uncomfortable he didn’t want to look at too closely.

“Then.. why?” he murmured, quieter, almost without realizing.

“.. Because I care.”

The cheetah blinked, as if he hadn’t heard correctly.

“.. What..?” Hugo didn’t look away.

“Your condition,” he clarified first, automatically. “Your safety, your—” He paused slightly, and that was the strangest part.

Because Vivian never paused.

“.. You.” he finished, quieter. “You’re not just any variable.. and I’m not going to treat you like one.”

Julian didn’t respond immediately. His chest was still rising and falling quickly, but it wasn’t just from the heat anymore.

It was that.

It was the care in Hugo’s words.

His grip on Vivian’s clothes didn’t loosen, but it didn’t tighten either.

The fox didn’t move—didn’t step closer, didn’t touch him again.

But something else did.

His tail.

It moved slightly behind him, brushing almost imperceptibly against Julian’s leg.

The Omega felt it immediately.
His body reacted with a small jolt, a shiver running up his spine again.

His breathing faltered even more.

Hugo’s ears moved slightly, subtly turning toward him, as if he were attentive to every small change in his state.

It wasn’t hunger, much less urgency.

It was attention.

And that was what unraveled Loki just a bit more.

Because it didn’t fit—none of this fit with what he expected.

“You’re.. weird,” he murmured again, quieter.

But this time it didn’t sound annoyed; his body leaned forward slightly again.

As if testing it.

Hugo’s tail brushed against him again, this time more clearly.

Loki closed his eyes for a second—this time his forehead almost brushed against Hugo’s.

His breath colliding with the other’s.

And neither of them pulled away.

“.. You said you wouldn’t do anything unless I wanted it,” he murmured, barely audible.

“Then decide. But don’t do it assuming I’ll ignore you.” Julian opened his eyes, his brow still furrowed—but not in the same way.

“.. If you do something.. do it because you want to.”

“.. I will. But not just because I want to.”

“.. Then?”

“I’ll also do it if you agree.” he murmured, his voice still low, closer than usual. “And if you like it.”

“H-Hugo..”

“I wouldn’t forgive myself if at any point I made you uncomfortable or did something you didn’t like.”

Julian didn’t know what to say—his mind was moving slower than his body.

“.. You’re an idiot,” he muttered, but his voice came out weaker than he intended.

His fingers tightened again in Hugo’s clothes—this time he didn’t try to hide it.

He definitely didn’t want to pull away from Vivian.

His breathing became more uneven, clashing against Hugo’s due to the closeness.

Their foreheads were still brushing, his body less and less willing to resist.

“Then tell me to stop at any moment.” Loki shook his head slightly, almost instinctively.

“No..” it slipped out, almost without thinking.

The fox didn’t react in an exaggerated way—he didn’t smile, nor did he seem willing to take advantage of him.

“.. Alright.” One of his hands slid to the back of the Omega’s neck.

Loki let out a breath, his body reacting immediately, leaning in a little more, closing whatever distance remained between them.

“.. Don’t talk so much,” he murmured, nervous, avoiding looking at him directly for a second.

Vivian’s tail moved again, wrapping a little more around the Omega’s leg.

Still not tightening—but keeping him there.

“If you change your mind.. tell me.” Julian swallowed, his ears lowering slightly.

“.. I’m not going to change my mind.” This time, his tone was more certain.

Even if his body trembled slightly, the alpha noticed.

“Then I won’t stop.” he replied, low.

Julian closed his eyes for a second, leaning a bit more into him, as if there was no point in resisting something he clearly wanted anymore.

“.. Hugo..” he murmured, softer. “𝘗𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦, 𝘧𝘶𝘤𝘬 𝘮𝘦.”

The Omega’s final words made Vivian finally lose a bit more of his control.

Before the fox could respond, the dark-skinned man pressed himself aggressively against him, kissing him hard.

His tongue pushed desperately into Hugo’s mouth, the other responding in kind, his hands sliding down to the Omega’s hips.

That simple contact made the Omega shudder even more, his lap pressing against the Alpha’s erect crotch.

“𝘐 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘮𝘦, 𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦..” he pleaded between kisses, tugging even more at the other’s shirt.

“Julian..” He half-lidded his eyes as his tongue continued exploring the Omega’s mouth.

Julian’s legs kept trembling—Hugo, almost automatically, noticed this, this time gripping the other’s hips firmly to help him keep his balance.

Handling an Omega was an entirely different challenge—and even more so when that Omega was Loki.

A speedster with incredible stamina—if his endurance on the field seemed infinite, what would it be like in sex?

An Omega like him was going to test his self-control.

“Let me help you..” He kept holding him carefully as he guided him to some nearby benches, laying the Omega down on them.

Carefully, he undressed the dark-skinned man, each piece of clothing he removed only earning muffled moans from Loki.

That was all—until he had to take off his underwear.

His boxers were already completely soaked from the fluids his body was producing because of the heat.

“You’re already completely wet..”

“Be careful—Ah~” he let out a louder moan when Vivian’s hands slid over his covered crotch.

His underwear was nothing but a useless layer, all the liquid already seeping through it.

“You look so pretty, Loki..” Vivian murmured, his cock hardening more and more from the pheromones.

He didn’t hesitate, finally pulling down the Omega’s underwear.

His cock wouldn’t stop dripping, and his hole had begun to partially loosen, craving desperately to be fucked.

Hugo flushed at the sight, lowering himself and taking the Omega’s cock into his mouth.

Julian’s back arched against the bench, his hips lifting instinctively, his thighs wrapping around the redhead’s head, forcing him further into his cock.

“H-Hugo~!” The heat in his body spiked too quickly, his hands sliding into Hugo’s hair, almost pulling.

Vivian only gave a slight smile as he continued sucking him off firmly, aggressively, intent on leaving marks along his length.

“Hugo, Hugo~” he moaned breathlessly, his thighs trembling nonstop, just like his breathing.

The redhead simply kept tending to the Omega’s urgency, his tongue running along every part of him, savoring him completely.

Within seconds, it didn’t take long for him to come in the Alpha’s mouth, letting out a loud moan as his chest rose and fell rhythmically.

He kept Loki’s cum in his mouth, slowly pulling away from his length, leaving a string of mixed saliva and cum between his lips and the tip of his cock.

He leaned in again, kissing the forward as he deposited the thick liquid into the other’s mouth.

He moaned again into the kiss, his thighs this time sliding up around the Alpha’s waist, pulling him closer.

When their lips parted, the white liquid slipped from the corner of his mouth.

“You’re so pretty, Julian..” he smiled a bit more as he felt Loki’s body trembling. This time, his hands slid down to the Omega’s wet entrance.

“Yes, please~” he begged, clinging to him more. “Fuck me, please.. ” He spread his legs wider, using his hands to pull them back and open himself further.

“I can’t hold back anymore.. ” he murmured to himself, not hesitating as he pulled down his shorts, revealing his thick, fully erect cock.

Julian smiled widely at the sight, his abdomen tensing with anticipation.

“𝘐’𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘦, 𝘑𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘯.. ” Loki looked at him with teary eyes as he felt the other’s cock brush against his entrance.

He let out a loud cry as the Alpha’s cock sank into his wet opening. Vivian, for his part, took one of the other’s legs and lifted it onto his shoulder, placing the Omega in a more comfortable position.

“H-Hugo~!” he moaned louder as he felt the other finally reach deep inside him.

“You’re tight~” he let out a low chuckle, slowly losing control due to the pleasure and the pheromones in the air.

He ran his hands over Loki’s nipples, pressing into them with his fingers, stimulating them further.

That only made the Omega’s body shudder even more, trembling with every small touch he felt.

He let out a muffled moan as his alpha’s hips began to move back, thrusting into him hard and deep, making sure to stimulate every part of Loki.

“Hugo.. Hugo~” he moaned his name with a dangerously lustful tone. “𝘔𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘮𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘖𝘮𝘦𝘨𝘢, 𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦~” he begged, and that made Hugo lose even more of his restraint.

He gripped the dark-skinned man’s waist tightly, enough to leave marks on it. The thrusts remained rough and fast, and Loki enjoyed every millisecond of them—shit, his alpha’s cock really felt that good…

Vivian began to stroke him as well, making sure he felt as much pleasure as possible.

“Does it feel good, Julian~?” he asked between thrusts, the sounds of their bodies colliding echoing loudly, aggressive and unrestrained.

The forward didn’t answer—the only sounds he made were broken moans as tears slipped from his eyes, completely lost in the pleasure.

Vivian hit the most sensitive spots of his Omega with perfect precision, brushing against his prostate in a way that felt incredible while continuing to stroke him.

With just one hand, he completely wrapped around the Omega’s cock, pumping it roughly as pre-cum quickly began to bead at the tip.

Suddenly, Hugo stopped moving, keeping his erect cock buried inside Loki’s wet heat, shuddering slightly.

“I love you so much, Julian.. You’re so beautiful, even when you’re in heat..” he murmured, leaning in to kiss him again.

The Omega’s body trembled with pleasure as he kissed the Alpha intensely, letting out soft moans between kisses.

“You’re so wet inside..” he whispered into Loki’s ear before starting to thrust into him again. “I promise I’ll take good care of you~” he added, placing a soft, tender kiss on his cheek.

This time his thrusts were rougher, making the forward’s throat vibrate with the constant cries and moans he let out.

His body twisted under the pleasure, and it didn’t take long before the Omega finally came hard, the thick liquid spreading from his abdomen up to his chest.

“Ah~ Ah~” He clung tighter to his Alpha, his nails leaving marks along Vivian’s well-built back. “Keep fucking me, please~ I want more, don’t hold back with me, please~” he begged again—fuck, he looked so good when he pleaded.

Hugo obeyed, continuing his aggressive thrusts. It felt so good—his cock hitting that sensitive spot over and over again…

He kept going until his movements turned completely frantic, the forceful collisions making them both moan from the friction of their sweat-slicked bodies.

It didn’t take long before Vivian’s cock finally emptied inside Julian, and his omega wasn’t far behind—he came again, further staining his torso.

“Agh~ Hugo~” he moaned weakly, as the muscles inside him tightened and clenched around the Alpha’s cock, keeping him trapped inside for a few more moments.

Vivian let out a low growl at the sensation, his hand moving up to Loki’s chin.

“Julian.. you’re squeezing too tightly..” he panted, trying to catch his breath, wiping the sweat from his forehead with his forearm.

He groaned again as Loki clenched even harder—his insides were so warm, long strands of semen slipping from the Omega’s entrance, coating them along with the knot.

“Don’t move..” he murmured low, near his ear.

Julian barely reacted, still trembling, clinging to him.

“.. Why..?”

Hugo placed a firm hand on his hip, holding him in place.

“Because right now your body is in an extremely sensitive state.. If you force unnecessary movement, you increase the risk of pain.. or an adverse reaction.”

Loki frowned, still lost in the sensations.

“Your muscles are still contracted.” His thumb moved slightly, as if checking. “And your system is overstimulated.” He lowered his voice a bit more, as if slightly embarrassed by his own explanation. “Moving right now isn’t.. efficient.
.. Nor safe.”

The Omega let out a sharp breath, his body relaxing slightly against him, though he was still trembling.

“You talk like it’s a math problem…”

“It is..” Hugo replied without hesitation, making Loki let out a weak, tired laugh.

Hugo lowered his gaze slightly, his expression softening just enough to barely be noticeable.

“Stay like this for a moment..” he added, quieter. “It’s best for you. I want to take care of you.”

The dark-skinned man couldn’t help but smile as he steadied his breathing, slowly lowering his trembling legs and nodding.
