Rainy Days

Summary:

When Sunset Shimmer dashes home in a sudden downpour one fateful summer, she finds more than just a cozy evening with Twilight Sparkle waiting for her. This fic is (mostly) fluff, rainy days, pool parties, slumber parties, and the fluttery feelings they’re both too shy to admit—yet.

Chapter 1: The First Drops of Rain

Chapter Text

Sunset Shimmer had just returned from Sugarcube Corner, holding two bags of hot, fresh apple cinnamon muffins that her and Twilight Sparkle, who was waiting at her apartment, were to enjoy. Just as she exited, waving a subtle goodbye to Pinkie Pie, is when the rain began to fall. And boy did it fall. It was as if she were back in Equestria, and thousands of pegasi pounded on the clouds so hard they drooped miserably with water. Instantly, the clouds became giant billowing dark masses lighting up with the deep bass of thunder.

As Sunset started to run towards her apartment she became soaked with the cool rainwater. She didn’t even think of bringing an umbrella; the weather was seemingly perfect before she left. Luckily the walk back wasn’t very long, and her door was left unlocked. She ran inside and caught her breath, taking her wet tennis shoes off. She hung up the jacket she was wearing and saw Twilight sitting on the orange couch in the living room.

“Pfft, you’re soaking wet! Did you not see the weather forecast?” she said, laughing.

Sunset glared at her. “Yeah, yeah, laugh it up. And unfortunately, no. I was too busy getting ready this morning to notice. Anyways, I just hope the muffins are okay…”

Twilight finished the last of her giggles while Sunset set the bag muffins down on the island in the kitchen. “What kind did you get?” she asked, her gaze fixed on the bag.

“Oh, you know…your favorite.”

“Apple cinnamon? Aw, thanks Sunset!” Twilight said, rising quickly from the couch to grab a muffin. She affectionately rubbed a hand on her friend’s back, causing the former to blush and smile shyly. “I...I’m really glad your here, Twi. Will you be staying overnight?”

“Unless I’m needed at the library, yes.” Twilight said, smiling warmly. “Well, shall we?”

Sunset nodded eagerly. They both sat down and dug into the thankfully still-warm muffins. “Mmm, dewicioush...” Twilight said between bites. Sunset giggled at her this time, taking notice of a few crumbs on the purple haired girl’s face. Completely lost in the taste of the muffin, Twilight didn’t notice Sunset’s hand reaching up to brush away the few crumbs on her face.

Twilight stopped munching and met Sunset’s eyes. “You had some crumbs on your face…” Sunset said, trying not to laugh at her reaction to being brought back into reality.

“Oh! T-thanksh!”

Although a small gesture, Twilight felt her heart skip a beat.

After finishing their muffins they sat on the couch under Sunset’s fuzzy purple and orange blanket and turned on Netplic. The two decided on watching a tv series called Bad Ponies Club that they haven’t seen before. As the show played on, Sunset found herself sneaking glances at her friend. The purple haired girl was uncharacteristically deeply invested in all the drama, her eyes sparkling like her namesake. Sunset smiled to herself.

She’s so cute.

Sunset Shimmer has grown to have a crush on Twilight; she’s fallen for her wits, her charm, her nerdiness, and her beauty. Although her counterpart, Princess Twilight Sparkle, shares some similarities, there’s still so much that sets them apart. Sunset often gushes about her crush to Princess Twilight who finds it kinda uncanny but also happy that her friend is so in love. Sunset, however, has no idea that her crush has a crush on her. Both are too cowardly to confess to one another, so for now friendship is the safest option until feelings can no longer be hidden. Little did they know that day would come sooner than later.

“I’m getting a little sleepy, not gonna lie,” Twilight says, yawning immediately after.

“Same, and it’s only 9 o’clock, haha. It’s been a long day.”

“Oh?”

Sunset sighed. “I spent all day cleaning the apartment…it was a certified mess. I mean clothes all around my room, dirty dishes in the sink, shoes everywhere, dusty, etc. etc.”

“Aw, Sunset, I don’t mind a little mess. Trust me, my place is probably worse. Oh! Maybe you could come over there sometime!”

Sunset blushed at the invite, imagining being at her crush’s place. She normally has Twilight come here to hang out. But over time, her feelings changed for her (and vice versa), so things are different now. “Y-yeah, I’d love to. And I can’t help it, it’s you, I can’t have you seeing this place in shambles.”

Twilight giggled. “Don’t worry about it, I really don’t mind! Alright, I’m gonna get ready for bed before I pass out. Um, I’m guessing we’ll be sleeping in your room like usual?”

Sunset gulped. “Yeah, I mean, if that’s okay with you…?”

“Yep!”

Twilight quickly got up and went upstairs to the bathroom so Sunset would see the red hue all over her face.

Once inside, she breathed heavily, feeling like her heart would explode out her chest. The anxiety was slowly eating away at her. Why am I like this?! This is what we always do when we have sleepovers. I mean, it’s not like anything’s gonna happen. Right? Right?!

Twilight tried to calm her breathing. Hoping a cold shower would calm her down (she read a study on that recently), she attempted to do so before ultimately chickening out and settling on a good old, scorching hot shower. After getting all ready and whatnot, she began walking down the hallway and entered her crush’s room. She found Sunset already laying in bed on her phone, curled up against the side of her bed closest to her desk. She looked up from her phone and gave a cute smile. Twilight felt her heart leap in her chest.

“Ready for bed?”

Twilight nodded, heart racing as she climbed into bed.

Sunset gave her a concerned look. “Um, Twi, you might fall off sleeping on the edge of the bed like that…you can um, come closer. If that’s okay with you, of course…”

“O-oh! Right, sorry!” Twilight internally cursed. She awkwardly scooted closer to Sunset until she was flush against her and under her light orange covers. Sunset moved to turn the lamp off, feeling her legs brush against Twilight’s. Besides the moonlight from the window, the room went dark, and Twilight felt her heart slow down a bit now that Sunset wouldn’t be able to, at least clearly, see how nervous she was. Unsure of which way to turn, she laid on her back staring at the ceiling, unable to fall asleep. Sunset followed suit, sensing something was amiss. She turned her head towards Twilight, and asked, “Hey, Twi…is everything okay?”

Twilight jumped. How can she tell?!

“O-oh, you scared me! Yeah...I’m just a bit…I don’t know. Nervous, I guess?” Shit! That was dumb Twilight! Now she’ll definitely know you like her!

“Nervous? Why’s that?” Sunset was nervous too, but wanted to play it cool.

Twilight gulped. “I…I’m not sure.”

“Oh.”

Silence fell between them, as did an unexplainable tension. Sunset kept stealing glances, noticing how the moonlight rested on Twilight’s face, hair, and neck. Twilight felt her eyes on her, and caught the girl staring. Sunset blushed. Twilight noticed the same thing as Sunset—how beautiful her warm colored skin looked under blue tones. They locked eyes. Twilight’s eyes drifted down towards her lips, dirty thoughts flooding her mind of what it’d be like to kiss her. It was then, at that moment, she realized Sunset’s was looking at the same spot on her. Embarrassed, Twilight turned the other way, eyes widening and heart racing faster. In their minds, both asked the same question.

What the hell was…that?

The next day, Twilight awoke to the smell of something delicious. Something sweet…and savory. She rubbed her eyes, and groggily sat up. Seeing that Sunset was already out of bed, she felt a little sad. Slowly sliding off the bed, she walked to the bathroom. Realizing the smell was coming from the kitchen, she smiled.

On the toilet, thoughts of last night came back to her. She covered her head in her hands, feeling something between excitement and embarrassment. It was as if they shared a romantic moment, yet neither acted on their thoughts. Twilight seriously wanted to kiss her, and felt like Sunset might’ve too, but at that realization she panicked. Now she regrets not making a move. That would’ve been the perfect time to confess, to kiss…but now she’s way too insecure to do anything about it. Sunset, on the other hand, is still unsure of how Twilight feels but knows in her heart something not-very-platonic happened to them that night. If Twilight didn’t panic and roll over, she would’ve confessed right then and there. Something in the air told her that that was the perfect timing. But she let Twilight be, unsure of how she felt, and not wanting to scare the other away.

Sunset, clad in a graphic oversized tee and fuzzy socks, finished preparing about three servings of scrambled eggs and a fluffy stack of pancakes. Just as she set two plates down on the dining table, Twilight walked into the kitchen with a wide smile plastered her face. It almost felt like this was their home (she’s here so much it really does feel like that), but seeing Sunset making her food made her chest feel warm inside.

“Aw, Sunset, you didn’t have to do all this!” Twilight exclaimed gratefully, walking towards the dining table.

Sunset looked her in the eyes. “No, Twi, of course I did; you deserve it. Honestly.”

Twilight was stunned for a moment, and stuttered out a response: “W-well, um, thank you, nonetheless. I-It smells and looks absolutely delicious!”

Sunset smiled shyly. “Why, thank you. I hope it tastes as good as it looks. And, smells, too. Um, would you rather eat here or in the living room?”

Usually they’d eat in the dining room but Sunset figured Twilight might want to continue watching the show they started last night.

“Yeah sure, I’d love to.”

Twilight took her plate and strolled over to the couch, and Sunset followed suit. She noticed that Twilight was still wearing her matching purple sleep tank and mini shorts with stars on them; the shorts riding up a bit with each step. Sunset flushed, trying to tear her eyes away as Twilight sat down and began eating.

“Damn, this is really good Sunset. You should be a chef or something!”

Sunset blushed. “Aw, I’m flatter- huh? Who could that be?” Sunset’s phone echoed a ding throughout the room. Her phone’s usually quiet dry (besides Twilight texting her), so this was a surprise.

She unlocked her phone, reading the message. “Oh! It’s Pinkie Pie. She said that we are cordially invited to the pool party and sleepover she’s hosting at her place! It looks like everybody’s gonna be there.”

Twilight smiled excitedly. “Pool party?! Is it today? Oh my god, I haven’t been to a pool party in, well, forever!”

“Yep! We definitely need to go. I have a few spare swimsuits if you need one.”

“Sounds like a plan!”
