The Rise of Polaris

Summary:

The sudden appearance of a new tribe led by terrifying mythical creatures, turned malicious through mysterious circumstances, challenges society as it has been in the Square. From differing corners of the Square, six unlikely heroes emerge.

Notes:

I have been captivated with the worldbuilding provided by the creators of The Battle of Polytopia, a 4x strategy game since I downloaded it on my phone back in 2017. The deep history behind these 16 warring tribes keeps me coming back to play, even after 9 years.

This story is based on a homebrew DnD campaign I played with some friends (current and former) almost 4 years ago. In addition to the already established lore, I have also injected some lore of my own, making sure not to conflict with the already existing lore written by Midjiwan and Zoythrus. Enjoy!

Chapter 1: Origins

Chapter Text

THE SQUARE

The Origin Myth

There was a time before the tribes. Before the great Leoon migration, before the Xin-xi learned to climb their sacred namesake mount, before the Ai-Mo found their path to light, before the destruction of the library of Zamoya and its trove of knowledge, before the Luxidoor discovered the riches beneath their feet.

On the first turn, Topan and Pol stepped from the moon to the northernmost tile, the Square became home to one proud people: the Original Polytopians. This was a time of great peace and prosperity. But as the land changed and the Polytopians grew in numbers, the valley that cradled them became to small too hold all. Some sailed to the islands in the west while others conquered the great deserts and grasslands in the south. Some sought refuge in the sacred mountains while others settled the harsh plains.

As Polytopians spread out across the Square, distance changed them. Differences in language and culture caused conflict, and the Great Polytopian War began. In the midst of the war, a council of representatives from each of the 11 warring tribes came together and negotiated peace, and on the day we call Concordance Day, our Square once again saw peace between the many Polytopians of the Square.

The Polytopian Council

The Polytopian Council are a council of 33 representatives that aim to keep diplomatic relations between the 11 recognized tribes of the Square. Each tribe elects 1 representative: 1 head, 1 senior, and 1 junior. Councilors serve until death or resignation, at which point an election is held for the open seat. They are not lawmakers or governors, but simply a congress of well-respected Polytopians that negotiate intertribal relations and adapt to ever-changing times. Every moon, the Councilors meet in one of eleven tribe capitals to discuss tribal relations.

The original 11 representatives of the council came together during the Great Polytopian War and brought about its end on a day now celebrated as Concordance Day at the location of the last Great Polytopian Battle.
