Chapter 1: Grace Ashcroft: Angel and Chainsaw

Chapter Text

Am I being too annoying? It's okay to worry right? I mean a lot could happen in 24 hours, Emily could be missing me right now. I decided that I would text the baby sitter for the tenth time now in just 5 minutes.

The constant click on my phone was distracting Leon while he drives so he tried to ease me.

"You left her that coloring book I gave last time right?" Leon asked, his eyes still on the road.

"The one with zombies?" I scoffed. "You can't be serious. I asked her sitter to read her some books I left."

"See! Emily's having fun." He assured me.

Who knew being a DSO agent could be so time consuming? I guess I did. Still, I barely saw Emily this week because of this case. I'm just glad it's all finished now. After I get home, I'll immediately turn in a leave note. I'll be having my most awaited vacation with Emily. And I won't be inviting Leon.

Leon parked the car in front of our house before unlocking the door.

"Thanks for the ride." I said before getting out the car.

"Anytime." he said before driving away.

When I opened the door, Emily was waiting for me on the sofa. I grabbed her by the waist and lifted her in the air. Jeez, she hasn't gain any weight at all. Maybe I'm not feeding her well?

"You were gone for so long!" She whined before pinching my nose.

The sitter walked towards me before placing her hand on Emily's back "She missed you so much." she said

"I'm sorry for constantly texting." I said while removing Emily's grab on my nose, "It was probably annoying."

"Oh cmon." She smirked "Any parent would do the same." she said.

She left shortly after. Me and Emily had dinner before I carried her to her room.

"I'm glad you're back safe." Emily whispered before falling asleep.

I remained by her side and watched her for a while. Parenting is a scary thing. It always makes me wonder if I'm doing the right thing with Emily. But seeing her like this, just like a normal kid, I thought that maybe I'm doing an okay job.

Despite being in my bed, my work isn't done yet. I grabbed my laptop and started writing the report on our case. Time flew by and it was already midnight when Sherry posted something on our group chat.

"Some B.O.W. wreaked havoc on a small town in Indonesia." said Sherry's chat followed by multiple pictures showing the casualty.

I browsed through the image one by one and each one of them was more heart breaking than the other. Entire houses made of cement were smashed while many people were left injured. I stopped on an image of a little boy crying and behind him was nothing but rubble and smoke. My stomach curled and my eyes felt heavy with tears.

"What did this?" Leon asked

"Reports said that an angel attacked their town." Sherry answered before sending blurry images of the culprit.

The images were blurry, just how fast is this thing? But from it's silhouette, it really does look like an angel. It had 4 dark wings on its back. I zoomed on an image that had its face. Its face is covered by some kind of black cloth.

"Why does it look like a little girl?" Leon asked.

"Locals described her appearance as a teenage girl with four massive wings on her back. She was clothed in black and had gold accessories all over her body." Sherry replied.

"Do we know where it is now?" I asked

"There are sightings in Japan." Sherry said. "It did all of this in Indonesia in under an hour. This thing is powerful."

"I guess I'm adding this one to my confessions then." Leon said "Are you coming, Grace?"

My fingers hovered over my keyboard. I don't want to let this thing continue to run rampart. But still, I just got back to Emily. Even if I tag along, I bet I'll just be a hinder to Leon. I'm not as strong as Leon nor as brave as Sherry.

After meeting some of Leon's friends, I realize that I'm the least suited person for this job. I'm not a badass that takes down monsters. I'm just Grace.

"I'll be at the hanger until the afternoon in case you change your mind." Leon posted.

I've had a lot of pancakes before and I'm pretty sure this one I made is burnt times five. I pulled the pan out of the stove and placed the burnt pancake on my plate. Emily's eyes twitched as she saw my "well done" pancake.

"You're eating burnt stuff all the time." She said "You can have some of mine." She offered after cutting her pancake in half.

I gave her a smirk before chugging on my plate. "Adults like bitter stuff." I lied.

"When is Leon and Sherry going to come over?" She asked

"They're on a case right now." I explained

"Without you?" She tilted her head

"They're dealing with some powerful creatures this time." I said "I'll be no help."

"Why?" She asked

"Well..." I gulped "I'm just me."

Emily frowned before reaching my hand. "The Grace I know fought monsters too." she said proudly "And she won."

I was smiling before I know it. "You really know how to work me up don't you?" I said.

"Just come back safe." She smiled.

"We're going to the beach right after this." Sherry said while boarding the plane.

"I just hope we finish this quick." I said

The three of us boarded a private plane and went straight to Japan. I couldn't help but be worried throughout the entire flight. An uneasy feeling always creeps under my skin whenever I look at the angel's photo.

The lead we currently have is some sightings of a strange dark flying figure over small towns in Japan. According to Sherry's report, similar sightings were also seen in Indonesia before the attack. Even before Indonesia, the angel has apparently struck multiple rural areas in South East Asia. The angel's pattern of attacks doesn't make sense. She doesn't appear to have any motives. It seems like she's doing this all on impulse.

After hours, we landed in Osaka before dumping our stuff in a hotel. We rented a van and rode to the area of the sightings. Sherry took the wheel while Leon sat beside her. I took the back seat beside our "luggage".

"Hold on to this." Leon said before handing over the Requiem to me.

I nodded before taking it from his hands.

We brought a few things like ammunitions, hand grenade, and a shot of Elpis.

It wasn't that long till we reached the town. After parking our van near the rice fields, we proceeded to ask people.

Sherry became our spokesperson because of her good Japanese. We talked to a lot of people and we all got the same answer. Just some mysterious figure in the sky. Until...

"We had tea." The old man said.

"Did he really said that?" Leon clarified "No mistranslation?"

"Positive." Sherry confirmed.

He welcomed us inside his home and poured us some tea before telling us the story.

"It was already night time when she descended from the sky and landed over my roof. Despite her weird looks, I thought I'd invite her in. She was fairly quiet and polite." He narrated "I might've been too rude when I ask her what she was. But she just replied that she's an angel. She also looked tired so I let her rest on my vacant room."

"Did she say anything else?" Leon asked "Something about her plans maybe?"

"She told me that she wants to take her wings to the city." The old man answered

"Every attack until now has been on rural areas." I said "If she's going to attack the city, we need to call an evacuation."

"When did she leave your house?" Sherry asked

"About an hour ago." The old man replied

We left in a hurry and rushed back to Osaka. When we reached the city, a bunch of BSAA soldiers were already roaming the streets and a couple of roads were blocked. Leon and Sherry stepped out the van and continued on foot. I followed behind them while carrying some of our gear. The night is upon us and the city lights is slowly replacing the sun. We made our way through the crowd and grouped with nearby BSAA officers.

"Leon Kennedy, DSO" Leon introduced himself before showing his badge

"Leon? I'll inform the captain that you're here." The officer said.

"Chris is here?" Leon asked

"We've been tracking this thing since Malaysia." The officer replied

This thing got both the DSO and BSAA on its trail. I can't imagine the casualty should an attack fall upon the city. The evacuation barely began. We need to move the people fast.

The officers boarded us on a jeep before moving to their base.

"You up for the job?" A man in heavy armor called and watched as we get out the jeep.

"Aren't you getting old too?" Leon smirked

The man lifted his mask and showed a scruffy looking man. It was Chris Redfield, still alive and kicking. We first met sometime ago when I was still training in DSO. He's a good man and a great captain to his team.

"Grace! Does Emily know you're here?" Chris teased

"I got her permission." I said "She misses playing with Rose." I added

"I hope they can meet again when this is all over." Chris smiled

"Let's try our best to capture this angel tonight then." Sherry cheered after slapping Chris and Leon on the back.

Sherry and I monitored the radio and cameras to see any suspicious activities. We sat for a good half an hour before doubts crept into our bodies. Maybe we were wrong? It doesn't look like the angel's going to attack. But getting laid back will bite us in the back for sure so we held on longer. Sherry was going over multiple cameras across different districts while I keep an eye on police reports on the radio. There are suspicious robberies here and there but we couldn't trace it to the angel.

I stepped outside and was greeted by the huge crowd of moving people. Several faces went pass me and each one of them wear the same worry mask.

A gush of wind sent a chill down my body when a black feather was swept by it at hit my face. I grabbed it before taking a look. It was almost as long as my forearm. Suddenly, I realize a grim situation. I searched around the crowd when I saw a dark wing poking out among the moving people. My eyes widened while my chest tightened. I was frozen at first but I desperately forced my self to move.

"Angel!" words forced out of my mouth

The crowd dissipated and ran away from the angel while BSAA officers got into position.

"I have eyes on target." Shouted one soldier

"Negative. Civilians still in the area." Chris called over the radio

The angel was hooded in a long black cloak with its wing sticking out the back. She raised her arms slowly before tearing the cloak from her body. Under her cloak, she was holding a bright yellow chainsaw. She revved it a few times before it started spinning violently.

Sherry ran out the tent and stood beside me before drawing her pistol. I snapped myself our of the fear and pulled the requiem from my holster. My hands shook uncontrollably as I aimed it towards her. She was surrounded by panicking people that were running away from her.

She took one hand off the chainsaw and slowly raised it above her head before clenching it into a fist. Suddenly, the people around her ceased to move and stood frozen in their place. It looked like time froze for a moment. People were locked in a running position while some hang in the air while stumbling. I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing. Is it some kind of mutated telekinesis?

She pulled her fist towards her chest before one of the civilians floated towards her. When the civilian came close enough, the angel swung the chainsaw at him, ripping his body in half.

"Holy shit." I heard Sherry whispered beside me.

I took a big gulp before my hand's shaking started to worsen.

It wasn't long after that when a group of trucks stopped beside her. Chris's troops hopped out the truck and started firing. We used the distraction to get the rest of the civilians out.

The troops rained heavy calibers on her but she used her wings as a shield. She didn't suffer any damage despite all of that fire power.

Chris and his troops flew in the air after the angel pushed her hands forward. A gust of wind splash the ground as she lifts off from the ground. The standing troops shot her in the air but she was too fast to hit. BSAA soldiers were getting swooped by her chainsaw as she dives down and pick them off group by group. We were sustaining too much damage and needed to retreat.

Sherry and I hid behind a car before checking our gear. Sherry had an Ar-15 strapped on her while I had the same plus the requiem. The BSAA soldiers had the same if not more powerful weapons but none of them managed to hurt the angel. Sherry and I knew we'd be wasting our bullets.

I peaked over the car and saw the angel dodging bullets from the BSAA's chopper crew. What even is that wing made of? The helicopter was cut in half after the angel flew toward it. It came crashing down the streets sending huge fire. The streets are now in chaos.

The angel flew away wreaking havoc in other places when Sherry and I left our cover to check up on Chris.

"Are you alright?" Sherry asked as we pull him up.

Chris caught his breath before giving us a thumbs up. "Leon?"

"About to meet our maker." He called over the radio

We got on a truck and rushed over his location. They made the streets their arena. When we got near, Sherry rammed the truck on the angel.

"Took you long enough." Leon said after we got out the car.

Not even a military truck can stun this thing one bit. She pushed it away like it was nothing before pointing the running chainsaw at our way.

"Let's do this together." Chris said before we started rushing towards it.

Sherry and I emptied our mags trying to distract it while Chris and Leon got below her and stuck a few grenades on her. She threw it back at us and some on the streets.

Her wings are somehow the strongest material on earth. It can withstand bullets and grenade blast. How do we even stop this thing?

Leon and Chris rushed her closer before tugging her wings. Her body was wide open and I could see her for the first time. The giant dark wings attached to some pale teenage girl.

My head blanked out when my fingers mindlessly pulled the trigger, somehow managing to hit her sides.

The angel groaned in pain and dropped her chainsaw on the ground. She flapped her wings, sending Leon and Chris flying away. There was panic in the way she flew away.

Osaka was left in chaos while the BSAA tried to control the situation. The angel blended with the night and got away. Still we made one important discovery, the girl attached to the wings is its weakness.
