Chapter Text
The bathroom in the small, cramped, damp safe house was filled with rising steam that veiled the old mirror in a hazy curtain.
Draco Malfoy leaned his back against the cold porcelain edge of the tub, one hand holding a half-smoked cigarette. Gray smoke mingled with the hot steam, creating a mixed, pungent, suffocating scent.
He drew his knees up, trying to shrink himself in the tight space. Opposite him, Harry Potter looked no different from a defeated man who had just crawled out of rubble. The "Chosen One's" black hair was soaked, plastered to his forehead; his glasses had been flung somewhere on the tiled floor. Harry tilted his head back against the tub rim, his Adam's apple moving rhythmically with each heavy breath. He had already drained two bottles of Firewhisky the kind of liquor so strong that Draco was certain if he lit a flame near Potter's mouth right now, the man would burst into a living torch. Draco shifted his leg slightly, a wave of revulsion running down his spine as his knee accidentally brushed against Potter's leg under the murky water. He clicked his tongue, his face unable to hide utter disgust. How ridiculous a noble Malfoy reduced to "sharing" this old, cramped tub with his mortal enemy. In the past, Draco would rather have thrown himself off the Astronomy Tower than be forced to see Potter's dazed face at such close range.
"Hey, Potter, if you're going to puke in here, I swear I'll use Diffindo to slice your tongue right off," Draco growled, but the only reply was a hollow burp and a vague nod from the thoroughly drunk wizard.
He exhaled sharply, turned, and immediately his scowl softened. His eyes locked onto Hermione, who was slowly shedding the last of her clothing beside the tub. This was the only thing that made the twisted situation bearable.
"Come on, Granger. Get in here quick before I suffocate from the stench of your precious friend's booze," Draco drawled lazily, his voice dropping into something low and suggestive.
Hermione turned, her brown eyes flashing fire even though exhaustion still lingered on her face.
"Don't tell me what to do, Malfoy. If you can't stand it, just get out and sleep on that dusty floor."
Draco answered with a smirk. He watched intently as she slipped off the bathrobe. Under the dim yellow light, her bare back appeared, covered in deep red kiss marks scattered like crushed rose petals on porcelain skin. Those were the "marks" he and Potter had competed to leave in the heat of earlier passion a silent, insane rivalry between two men on one woman's body.
He watched her bend slightly, her delicate brows furrowed as she tried to use slender fingers to scoop out the remnants both men had released deep inside her. Her fingers pulled out thick, sticky white fluid in messy clumps. Hermione muttered curses about their lack of restraint and men whose "brains are all sperm" and "don't know moderation." Draco chuckled deep in his throat, satisfaction clear in every line of his face. He liked seeing her dirtied; he liked the way she carried traces of him inside her body.
He scooped some water and splashed it lightly onto her slender back, making her shiver.
"Don't waste your effort, Granger. The more you try to clean it, the more I want to fill it again."
Hermione rolled her eyes a habit she still hadn't shaken despite everything then finally stepped into the tub. She slid in between the two of them, settling into the tiny remaining space between Draco and Harry. Water rose, sloshing. Draco let out a relieved breath; at least now he no longer had to face Potter's body or the git's "privates" under the water.
The warmth from Hermione's body transferred to him, making Draco narrow his eyes in satisfaction. She turned to look at Harry, who was still leaning his head back against the tub rim, eyes closed as if unconscious. Hermione reached out to stroke Harry's Adam's apple, her voice softening with the indulgence Draco always envied.
"Drunk already, Harry?"
"Yeah..." Harry slurred, his fingertips instinctively groping for her hand.
A small spark of jealousy flared in Draco's chest; he couldn't stand her giving attention to that drunken fool even for a second. He immediately sat up, pressing closer, molding his chest against her back and resting his chin on her delicate shoulder. He smiled a half-smirk full of malice lips brushing her earlobe.
"Let me help you scoop out that pile of come, shall I? Leaving Potter's load inside you too long might infect you with his stupidity." He whispered, his hand sliding under the water, long slender fingers beginning to caress her inner thigh, advancing toward the secret place that now held both their chaos.
His hand didn't wait for permission; it slipped beneath the water, long slender fingers starting to tease her inner thigh, moving gradually toward the mysterious place containing both their mess. Hermione clicked her tongue, one hand pushing his forehead away, but she didn't remove the wandering hand under the water. She leaned fully back against Draco, eyes closed, ignoring the Malfoy heir's roughness.
Draco felt the tremor pass from Hermione's slender back to his chest. Under the now murky warm water clouded with soap bubbles and the remnants of their earlier debauchery his long, bony fingers slowly penetrated. He wasn't rushed; on the contrary, he savored the thrill as he felt her body clench around his finger.
Layer after layer of thick, sticky white fluid the mingled mess of both him and Potter was meticulously drawn out by Draco. He lightly stroked her entrance, then roughly pushed into her tight rear hole, making Hermione bite her lip until it turned white to suppress a moan. She dug her nails into Draco's arm, her thin legs parting slightly, trembling under his touch that was both cleansing and deeply lascivious.
"Look at this, Granger... so much of it. No wonder you called us animals."
Draco whispered against her ear, his voice hoarse with arousal as he watched the sticky white streams float on the water's surface.
At that moment, a movement from the opposite side made Draco pause. Harry Potter the one who seemed unconscious from Firewhisky stirred slightly. Harry sat up straighter, water streaming from his soaked black hair down his scarred, toned chest. He summoned a pack of cigarettes with a lazy flick of his hand. The flame from the cigarette tip flared, illuminating his emerald eyes now narrowed and fixed on Hermione's body. Smoke from Potter mingled with Draco's, forming a thick fog enveloping Hermione in the middle.
Harry took a deep drag, white smoke curling around Hermione's face. He raised his other hand, rough fingers smearing the remaining streak of semen on her cleavage a faint white mark in stark contrast to her flushed, heated skin. He slowly moved his finger, drawing a straight, sticky line from her cleavage, across her flat stomach, and stopping at her navel.
"Really filthy, Hermione," his voice was rough and low, eyes glued to the line he had just traced on her skin.
"Mm..."
Hermione felt like prey being carved up by two wild beasts. The dual touches from both sides startled her. An electric current raced down her spine, carrying both shame and uncontrollable arousal. She drew her legs up, her small foot pressing firmly against Harry's solid chest, trying to create a fragile distance.
"Stop... Harry... and you too, Malfoy... enough," she gasped, voice trembling yet still trying to hold onto a shred of authority.
Draco not only refused to let go but tightened his arms around her waist, pinning her firmly against him so she couldn't pull back. He watched how Harry took her kick without flinching, calmly exhaling smoke into the air, his opposing gaze on Hermione like she was the most delicious prey in the world.
"Don't be stubborn, Granger," Draco sneered, his finger suddenly pressing deeper inside her under the water, twisting lightly. "Potter just wants to 'lend a hand.' Right, Scarhead?"
Harry stared at the foot still pressed against his chest. He had no intention of retreating before her feeble resistance. On the contrary, the light kick only fueled the haze in his liquor-clouded emerald eyes. He took one final drag, then flicked the cigarette butt onto the damp tiled floor; pale smoke drifted out, wrapping around Hermione's curled, embarrassed toes. Before her stunned and mortified eyes, Harry lowered his head and lightly bit the big toe of her foot.
"Mm... Harry! What... what are you doing? Stop... ha..." Hermione cried out, her voice breaking.
He began to slowly suck each of her small toes. The wet sucking sounds echoed clearly in the quiet bathroom. Hermione was so embarrassed she wanted to disappear into a hole. She tried to pull her foot back, but Harry's hand clamped around her slender ankle like a steel vise, allowing no successful resistance.
"You're... you're too drunk, Harry! Let me go... I'm dying of embarrassment!" Hermione whimpered, her face now red as a ripe tomato, the heat of the water and humiliation making her unable to meet her best friend's eyes.
Harry released her toe, only to do something even more teasing. His hot tongue licked along the spaces between her toes, then dragged firmly down the sensitive sole of her foot before sliding back up to the top, where the skin was thinnest. Each lick from Harry came with a piercing stare into Hermione's misty, tear-filled eyes.
"You're right, Hermione..." Harry rasped, his voice now stripped of any of its usual innocence.
"I'm drunk... but you're really beautiful."
From Draco's perspective, the scene was utterly exquisite.
He watched the way her closest friend the smartest witch of her generation was kneeling submissively at her feet like a starving beast, while he himself controlled her from behind. He tightened his grip on Hermione's waist, pulling her hips flush against his painfully hard erection, lips pressing against the nape of her neck where damp baby hairs clung together.
"Look at that, Granger... Your saintly best friend doesn't look so saintly anymore, does he? More like a ravenous animal." Draco smirked, his voice hoarse and mocking. "He's licking my marks clean off you. How does it feel? Embarrassed yet that both of us are losing our minds over you?"
Harry released her foot slightly but still kept hold of her ankle.
"I'm just helping you clean up, Mione. Didn't you just scold us for not knowing restraint?"
With that, he pulled her leg higher, pressing the top of her foot fully against his face, rubbing gently in a way that was sickeningly reverent. Hermione squeezed her eyes shut, her breathing turning ragged. She could still feel Draco's fingers relentlessly stirring inside her, while Harry began licking up her calf, gradually moving toward her knee. Hermione tried to close her legs to hide her exposed sensitivity, but Draco was faster. He used his large, strong hands to grip her knees and force them wide apart under the warm water. The restraint left Hermione's body completely open, defenseless against Harry's hungry gaze.
"Stay still, Granger. Let Potter finish his job," Draco whispered, his voice trembling with cruel excitement.
Harry didn't miss the opportunity. He buried his face against the creamy skin of her knee, his hot, rough tongue circling the kneecap before sliding upward to the sensitive inner thigh where the thinnest skin still bore faint white traces that hadn't been fully cleaned. Each lick made Hermione shudder violently; she felt like a string pulled too tight, on the verge of snapping.
Overwhelming shame crashed over her as she watched her dearest friend devouring her body like a worshipper. Hermione opened her mouth to beg, but Draco immediately seized her chin. He forced her head back, making her rest fully against his shoulder. Draco stared into her eyes, savage delight written across his handsome features.
"Look at me, Granger."
Draco commanded, his storm-gray eyes boring into her dilated pupils before he leaned down and brutally claimed her mouth. His kiss reeked of cigarette smoke and the sharp burn of Firewhisky. He bit and devoured, ravaging her mouth as though marking territory, as though trying to steal every breath from her lungs.
"Mm... ha..."
Hermione's moans were muffled by Draco's kiss, reduced to broken, choked sounds in her throat. Harry paused at the most sensitive part of her inner thigh, where both their deep red bite marks still stood out vividly. He inhaled deeply, savoring the scent of her body mixed with the lingering, mingled smell of his and Draco's release on her skin. His voice came out rough and low, right against her most intimate place:
"Malfoy... look... she's shaking."
Draco broke the kiss, a thin silver thread of saliva stretching between their lips. He panted, eyes glazed as he looked down at Harry buried between Hermione's thighs, then back at her dazed, tear-filled face. He smirked, and the hand holding her leg suddenly moved long fingers sliding through her folds before pressing firmly into the spot Harry was aiming for.
"She's not just shaking, Potter. She's inviting us."
Harry chuckled darkly, a low, guttural sound full of insane arousal from both alcohol and lust. He completely agreed with Draco's sly assessment. Without giving Hermione even a second to recover, Harry roughly seized her slender calves, decisively hooking them over his hips, forcing her body to open to its absolute limit right in the middle of the foamy water.
Draco moved in perfect, practiced sync, as though these lifelong enemies had reached a silent understanding about possessing her. He reached behind, using his strength to lift her hips clear of the water, positioning her in complete helplessness and exposure. To crush any last flicker of resistance, with his long reach and overwhelming power, he yanked both her arms up over her head and pinned them tightly against the cold porcelain rim. She was crucified in a Y-shape, chest heaving with indignation and arousal.
He gripped her chin hard, forcing her tear-streaked face to look directly down at the junction of their bodies.
Draco leaned close to her ear, sneering with pure malice:
"Look closely, Granger... Watch how your saintly best friend is working so hard to knock you up. Taste every bit of him before you forget whose seed is flowing inside you later."
Harry didn't let her catch her breath. He gripped his thick, veined length, slowly rubbing the scorching head against her swollen entrance, making Hermione hiccup in her throat. His eyes were clouded with liquor and desire, locked onto her wide, shocked gaze.
"So tight, Mione..." Harry growled, his voice rough and stripped of any former gentleness. "This slutty little hole is sucking me in like mad. Looks like Malfoy's come inside you still hasn't satisfied you, huh? Let me add another load to complete the set."
With that, Harry tensed and thrust forward in one brutal, deep stroke.
"Ah... ha...!"
Hermione's scream tore out, her body jerking violently in Draco's arms. The sudden, savage penetration felt like her insides were being rearranged.
"Be good, don't cry like you're being forced," Draco mocked, lips trailing along her bare shoulder. "Didn't you love being stuffed by both of us at once? Look how tightly you're gripping Potter... Little bookworm slut, today we'll teach you a proper lesson on how to get pregnant."
Harry began thrusting with brutal, merciless force, the sound of water slapping against the tub blending with the wet, obscene smack of skin on skin. He panted while taunting:
"Malfoy, look how her little mouth is spasming already... Bet she's trying to keep my seed inside so she can have a little Potter brat."
"You two... are insane..." Hermione sobbed, brown eyes blurring with steam and pleasure. The humiliation of being "taken care of" simultaneously by her two friends two former enemies made her want to disappear, yet her traitorous body kept trembling, welcoming each rising wave of ecstasy.
"That's right," Draco sneered. "We're all insane. But look at you, Granger this madness is exactly what you've always craved but never dared admit, isn't it?"
He didn't just hold her arms; his long fingers began to tease and knead her heaving, full breasts in time with Harry's ruthless thrusts. Draco bent down and bit hard into the creamy skin of her shoulder, leaving a deep red tooth mark like a brand of ownership amid the misty steam.
Harry hissed through clenched teeth, sweat dripping from his forehead to mix with the warm water on Hermione's skin. He had no intention of slowing or stopping. Each thrust went so deep it felt like he was trying to reach the very core of her, forcing her to accept every bit of his brutality.
"Be good, Mione... relax," Harry murmured, stroking her soaked hair with mock tenderness while every drive threatened to shatter her womb. "I know it hurts, but you're going crazy with pleasure too, aren't you? Feel how hot you are inside you're gripping me so tight, like you never want to let go. Stop tensing up... let me fill you completely..."
The wet, rhythmic slap of flesh mingled with splashing water formed a chaotic, degrading symphony. Hermione completely lost control, head falling back against Draco's shoulder, glassy eyes staring up at the ceiling.
Her mind screamed to stop, but her pleasure centers were drowning in the devastating ecstasy Harry and Draco forced upon her.
…
The small kitchen in the safe house was thick with tension. Hermione sat motionless on the rickety wooden chair, her brown eyes blazing with fury, both hands gripping the edge of the table so hard her knuckles turned white. She stared fixedly at the two who were calmly enjoying their dinner as if the madness earlier had never happened.
Draco leisurely ladled a bowl of steaming soup, smoke curling up, then used his slender fingertip to nudge the plate toward Hermione.
"Eat up, Granger. Stop pulling that face like I poisoned it. You’ll need your strength to keep ‘serving’ us, won’t you?"
Harry, somewhat sobered now but still looking exhausted, set his glass down and rubbed his temples, voice rough as he groaned: "Bloody hell, my head feels like someone’s hammering nails into it."
Draco’s lips curled into a sneer as he shot Harry a contemptuous glance.
"That’s what you get for chugging Firewhisky like it’s water, you idiot. Thought you were some giant hybrid? Weak as hell and still showing off."
"Shut your mouth, Malfoy!"
Hermione snarled. In a surge of white-hot rage, she snatched the silver spoon from the table and hurled it straight at Draco’s face. But with a Seeker’s reflexes, Draco tilted his head effortlessly. The spoon clanged sharply against the wall before clattering to the floor. He didn’t get angry instead, he looked at her with wicked amusement.
"Tsk, first lesson for a proper lady: don’t play with your food, Granger. You should appreciate my effort, shouldn’t you? Throwing things is what toddlers do before they’re weaned. Or do you want me to teach you again how to use that ‘mouth’ of yours properly?"
Draco’s taunt was like pouring oil on fire. Hermione exhaled sharply, her face flushed red with wounded pride and fury. To prove she needed neither his pity nor his lessons, she grabbed the still-smoking bowl of soup, lifted it, and took a huge gulp.
"Urgh…!"
She froze instantly, face twisting. The scalding spice seared her tongue numb. She slammed the bowl down, tears springing to her eyes from the pain and heat, her small lips trembling.
Harry let out a weary sigh, pushing his headache aside. He stood, walked over, and used his rough fingers to lift her chin, forcing her mouth open to inspect.
"I told you it was still hot… Why do you have to be so damn stubborn about it?"
Harry’s tone had softened back to its usual gentleness, tinged with quiet concern as his emerald eyes studied the angry red burn on her tongue. Meanwhile, Draco stayed seated, arms crossed over his chest, gray eyes watching the scene with a half-smirk full of hidden meaning.
Harry’s rough fingertips brushed lightly over her reddened tongue, the coolness soothing the burn a little, but the tenderness only made Hermione feel more miserable than ever.
"Come on, Mione… stop picking fights with him. My head’s about to explode do it for me, please," Harry rasped, his voice dropping into a small, exhausted plea after the long night of debauchery and drinking.
Hermione glared at Draco with pure hatred. In stark contrast to Harry’s disheveled state, Draco looked infuriatingly composed. He casually swept his damp platinum hair back with long fingers, exposing a perfectly innocent, handsome face. He shrugged as though her pain and the soup were mere entertainment.
"We need to break this damn curse fast!" Hermione ground out through clenched teeth, each word dripping venom.
Draco raised an eyebrow, gray eyes flashing with mockery.
"Good luck with that, Granger. Hope that genius brain of yours works faster than the way you moaned under us."
Hermione shook with rage. She wanted to leap up and slap that arrogant face, but the moment she tried to stand, her thin legs gave out like jelly. The exhaustion radiating from her lower back nearly sent her crashing forward; she barely caught the table edge.
She glanced at Harry her best friend still clutching his head and groaning from the Firewhisky aftermath then at Malfoy, who was calmly watching the drama unfold. Hermione bit her lip until it bled, deciding she’d rather sit here and die than ask Draco for help getting back to her room.
Merlin damn it all! What twisted reason had bound the three of them together like this? She silently prayed Bill and Fleur would return to Shell Cottage soon with the research she needed. Hermione was truly losing her mind. She swore to Merlin she never wanted to endure another day of sleeping with both her best friend and her lifelong enemy.
"If this keeps going…" Hermione muttered, shooting Draco a venomous look, "Merlin, just kill me already."
"What are you staring at? Want another round already?" Draco smirked, eyes sliding down to her trembling legs under the table. "Don’t push yourself too hard. The more you struggle, the tighter those chains get. Potter and I aren’t exactly thrilled to be stuck with such a disagreeable little thing like you, but at least we know what’s necessary to survive."
Hermione glared at Draco, pupils shrinking with fury, her stare sharp enough to pierce through the Malfoy heir’s chest. In response, Draco’s lips curved into a lazy, provocative half-smile. He leaned back in the wooden chair, gray eyes locking onto her still slightly swollen lips, then suddenly spoke in a low, velvety stream of French:
"Tu es si belle quand tu es en colère, ma lionne. Tes yeux brillent d'une flamme que j'ai envie d'éteindre avec mes baisers, encore et encore." (You are so beautiful when you’re angry, my lioness. Your eyes burn with a flame I want to extinguish with my kisses, again and again.)
Hermione hissed through her teeth, the incomprehension only deepening her humiliation:
"SPEAK ENGLISH!"
"You don’t get to order me around here," Draco drawled lazily, voice dripping with arrogance. His fingers tapped lightly on the tabletop in rhythm with the French syllables he’d just spoken, clearly savoring her frustration.
"Regarde-toi, petite lionne... si fragile et pourtant si féroce. J'adore quand tu me regardes avec cette haine, ça me donne envie de te briser à nouveau." (Look at you, little lioness… so fragile yet so fierce. I love the way you glare at me with that hatred it makes me want to break you all over again.)
Rage boiled over. Hermione reached for a dirty plate to hurl at his smug face, but a warm, slightly rough hand caught her wrist in time. Harry, despite his pale face and pounding headache, had quietly moved closer. He gently pried her clenched fingers open, then wrapped his arms around her trembling shoulders.
Hermione ground her teeth so hard it made a dry click in her throat. She looked at Draco, then at Harry wearily shielding her, and finally let her hand fall, abandoning the urge to attack because she didn’t want to make Harry’s headache worse.
Seeing her stop struggling, Draco gave a careless shrug. He tilted his head, gazed deeply into her eyes, and continued in French:
"Bientôt, tu ne pourras plus te passer de nous. Ton corps trahit déjà ton esprit, petite lionne." (Soon enough, you won’t be able to live without us. Your body has already betrayed your mind, little lioness.)
"Shut your mouth, Malfoy. You’ve talked enough!"
Harry snapped, voice hoarse but carrying real authority. Though he didn’t understand the words, instinct told him the foreign syllables carried danger. He tightened his hold around Hermione in a hard, possessive warning.
Draco burst into dry, arrogant laughter that echoed through the silent kitchen. He slowly rose to his feet, raising both hands above his head in a mock surrender before turning toward the creaky wooden staircase.
"Fine then, Chosen One. I'll head to bed first. Don't get too carried away with your 'heart-to-heart' and wear the girl out completely there's still plenty of 'homework' left for tomorrow."
Hermione stared after Draco's arrogant retreating back, her brown eyes still blazing with sparks of fury. Just before he fully disappeared into the shadowed hallway leading upstairs, Draco suddenly paused. He didn't turn completely, only tilting his head enough to reveal the sharp profile of his face and tossed back a seductive line in French:
"Peu importe à quel point tu me hais, ton corps se souvient de ma caresse... et j'attendrai le moment où tu me chercheras dans l'obscurité." (No matter how much you hate me, your body still remembers my touch... and I will wait for the moment you come looking for me in the dark.)
Even though she didn't understand a single word, the suggestive tone like a tongue sliding over bare skin and his triumphant smirk hit Hermione's already frayed patience like a bucket of boiling water. This time, she couldn't hold back. Despite her hands still trembling from exhaustion, she snatched the butter knife from the table and hurled it at the platinum-haired bastard with every ounce of pent-up rage.
Whoosh!
The knife sliced past Draco's ear and embedded itself in the wooden doorframe with a sharp thunk. Draco moved like a ghost; he only needed to tilt his head slightly to dodge, leaving behind a mocking laugh that echoed before he vanished completely into the darkness of the stairs.
The kitchen fell into a suffocating silence, broken only by Hermione's furious, heaving breaths. She stared after the shadow of her enemy, chest rising and falling as though it might explode. She had no idea what that string of French meant, but the low, filthy timbre of his voice and the lewd glint in his eyes were enough to tell her it was a disgusting insult.
"You filthy bastard... you lowly worm!" Hermione hissed, fingers digging into the table edge until they shook. She was about to chase after him, snatch her wand, and make him regret every word but the moment she shifted her weight, her traitorous legs buckled like wet noodles, and she collapsed straight into Harry's chest.
Harry tightened his arms around her, pulling her fully against him to steady her. He let out a heavy sigh, burying his face in her tangled hair, trying to use what little warmth he had left to soothe the wildfire of rage burning inside his best friend. His headache still throbbed in dull pulses; his voice came out exhausted:
"Let him go, Mione. The more you react, the more satisfied he gets. He's a venomous snake, and he knows exactly where to strike to hurt you the most."
Hermione turned in Harry's embrace, looking up into his gaunt face. She was still reeling and furious from the cryptic words Draco had left behind.
"What the hell did he just say, Harry? That tone... I swear I want to strangle him!"
Harry only tightened his grip on her shoulders in silence. He didn't understand French either, but a man's instinct and the insidious pull of the symbiotic curse told him those hadn't been kind words at all.
Hermione tried to draw a deep breath to steady the trembling spreading through her body, but guilt weighed on her chest like a boulder. She looked into Harry's tired eyes, heart twisting painfully. If she hadn't been careless in that moment in the Forest of Dean, if she hadn't been so overconfident in her knowledge, her best friend wouldn't have been dragged into this filthy mess.
She pressed her lips together, voice shaking:
"Harry... I'm sorry... it's my fault. Because I was careless in the Forest of Dean, you got pulled into this. You should never have had to endure this humiliation with me."
Harry shook his head gently. His emerald eyes looked at her with tenderness, yet also held a dark hunger the curse was quietly feeding. He took her hand, pressing a soft kiss to her cold palm; the warmth of his breath made her shiver faintly.
"Don't apologize, Mione. Never say that," his voice grew hoarse. "We're both victims of that damned curse. You're not alone I'm right here with you."
Hermione stared at their intertwined hands, a vague fear rising in her chest. She was terrified that these raw, forced physical intimacies would shatter the pure friendship they had carefully built over so many years. She looked up, brown eyes shimmering with unshed tears, clinging to one last shred of hope:
"We... we'll still be friends... after all this, right?"
Harry froze. A fierce storm flickered through the depths of his eyes for a split second. Inside him raged a brutal internal battle between genuine friendship and the possessive lust the magic was forcing him to feel toward the girl in front of him. He knew that every time they touched in "that" way, a piece of the innocence in their friendship was lost forever. But seeing the pleading fear in Hermione's eyes, he took a deep breath and nodded:
"Yeah... I promise. Once we break this bloody curse, you and I will still be friends. Nothing will change. All of this... it'll just be a nightmare we survived."
Hermione let out a relieved breath and lightly rested her head on Harry's shoulder. She wanted to believe that promise, but deep down, both of them knew that after everything that had happened and everything still to come until the curse was gone they could never truly go back to being the innocent kids they once were.
Chap 1
In the small, cramped tent, the space seemed suffocated by hostile silence. Pale golden magical light cast long, distorted shadows on the canvas walls, dancing with every gust of wind whistling through the gaps. On the folding bed, Ron sat there, his face gaunt and pale from the bone-chilling cold and gnawing hunger. But far more terrifying was the Horcrux locket hanging heavily around his neck; it was like a parasite, constantly emitting dark miasma that stirred every ounce of jealousy and rage in the Weasley boy’s heart.
“What the hell are we even doing here?” Ron broke the silence with a hoarse, bitterly venomous voice. “Just wandering from one forest to another hill. No plan. No leads. Nothing.”
Harry didn’t look up from the old map, his voice calm but exhausted: “We’re doing what Dumbledore wanted, Ron. You know that.”
“Dumbledore didn’t bother telling you everything either, did he?” Ron let out a dry, mocking laugh. He shot to his feet, bloodshot eyes from lack of sleep fixed on Harry.
“Admit it, Harry. You don’t know what the next step is. You’re just leading us straight into a dead end!”
Hermione stood nearby, her small shoulders trembling. She stepped forward, placing a shaky hand on Ron’s arm, voice pleading:
“Ron, please… it’s the locket. Don’t say any more…”
But Ron violently shook her hand off. The pent-up anger erupted like a volcano.
“My family could be under Death Eater surveillance right now! They could be getting interrogated, tortured because I’m out here with you! Have you ever spent even one second thinking about that, or are you too busy playing the hero?”
Harry clenched his fists, veins bulging on the back of his hand, his eyes turning cold: “Don’t pretend you’re the only one who cares about family.”
“Yeah, right!” Ron roared, a twisted smile curling his lips. “I must be an idiot for believing in a hero who doesn’t even know what he’s doing!”
“How the hell would you understand?” Ron shouted, voice dripping with contempt. “You never had a real family to lose, Harry. You’ll never know what it feels like to have people worth protecting. To you, dying or surviving it’s all the same. Because no one’s waiting for you anyway!”
SMACK!
The slap rang out sharp and dry, tearing through the thick air. Hermione’s palm stung, her brown eyes blurring with humiliated tears. She had struck without thinking because she couldn’t believe the boy she loved could say something so cruel, ripping open Harry’s deepest wound like that.
Harry stood motionless, face hardening like cold stone. He spoke in a low, terrifying tone:
“If you think this is too much… if you want to leave, then go. Right now.”
Ron looked at Harry, then at Hermione sobbing quietly. His eyes flickered violently for a brief second a flash of regret rising, waiting for a hand to pull him back, a word to hold him from his closest friends. But Harry remained still as a statue, and Hermione bowed her head, hiding her face.
No one stopped him.
Ron gritted his teeth, snatched his backpack, and stormed out of the tent, disappearing into the snow-covered night of the Forest of Dean. Hermione snapped out of her shock. Without even grabbing her coat, she threw herself into the freezing blizzard.
“Ron! Wait! Come back, Ron!”
Her screams were swallowed by the howling wind and snow. She ran until her breath turned to white clouds, feet pounding through thick snow until she caught up to the tall figure trudging ahead. Ron stopped, turned around, face flushed with rage and pain. He pointed back toward the shabby tent where the faint golden light still spilled weakly into the ancient forest, then snarled:
“Choose, Hermione. Him or me?”
Hermione froze in the darkness. The question stabbed through her heart like a knife. She looked toward the tent where Harry stood alone facing his cruel fate then back at Ron’s eyes brimming with hurt. Her whole body shook violently in sub-zero cold, lips pressed so tightly they turned white.
After a long, suffocating silence, Hermione let out a broken sob, voice shattered:
“I’m sorry… Ron… I’m so sorry…”
With that, she slowly turned her back. Each step was heavy, resolute, heading back toward the tent, leaving Ron standing alone in the storm.
Ron watched her small figure fade into the distance. He let out a bitter, scorching laugh:
“So that’s it… in the end, you always choose him.”
CRACK!
The sharp, cold sound of Apparition echoed.
Hermione collapsed right outside the tent door, hands clutching her chest, sobs bursting out into the desolate night. She called his name one last time, but only the wind howling through ancient branches and bone-numbing cold answered. Ron was truly gone, and this fracture seemed impossible to mend.
Hermione stumbled back into the tent, her trembling steps caused not just by melting snow but by the devastation that had just happened outside. In the cramped space, she saw Harry sitting on the edge of the bed, hands gripping his head tightly, body curled in on itself, shaking like a candle flame about to gutter out in the wind.
Hermione pressed her lips together, wiping away the lingering tears on her cheeks. She approached slowly, kneeling between his legs. Her small hands gently wrapped around his wrists, carefully pulling his shielding hands away, lifting his face to meet hers.
The emerald eyes that once burned with unbreakable will were now hollow voids, terrifyingly empty. Harry’s pupils had shrunk to tiny pinpricks, lost in bottomless pain. It was the gaze of someone who had lost everything: family, friends, hope and now stood on the edge of losing the last person who remained. His long lashes were soaked, trembling as if they might shatter under the weight of despair. Silent tears slipped out, scalding hot against the freezing tent, sliding between her fingers in stark contrast to the icy cold.
Hermione cradled his face in her palms. Bitterness rose like gall in her throat as she looked deep into those lifeless eyes, feeling his erratic heartbeat sync with her own choked sobs.
She leaned forward, their breaths mingling. Hermione’s lips gently brushed his closed eyelids, tenderly kissing away the salt of his desperate tears. She kissed his trembling lashes, his frost-bitten cheeks, so softly afraid any sudden movement might shatter him completely beneath her touch.
Finally, she wrapped her arms around Harry's neck, pulling him into a fierce embrace, as if she could shield him with her very life.
Harry didn't return the hug immediately. He froze in her arms, his voice hoarse and shattered like dry leaves crushed underfoot:
"You'll regret this, Hermione... You should have gone with him."
Hermione didn't hesitate. She shook her head, pressing her forehead to his, their breaths mingling:
"I will never regret it, Harry. Never."
Harry gripped her small hand tightly, his voice catching, thick with self-loathing and utter despair:
"I can't give you a real family, Hermione... You should have gone with him. With Ron, you'd have a home, people who love you. Staying with me... there's only danger and death."
Hermione answered with heartbreaking resolve:
"You are my family, Harry. And I will never absolutely never abandon my family."
Harry went rigid, his entire body stiffening like stone at her declaration. Hermione cradled his face, her soft fingers gently tracing along his cheekbones, clumsily wiping away the lingering hot trails of tears. In the cramped tent, their breaths intertwined, the distance between them shrinking until they could feel each other's racing heartbeat and the heat radiating from skin.
Crack!
A dry snap of a branch breaking echoed from the edge of the forest.
Harry snapped out of his daze like pure survival instinct. He sprang up, wand clutched tight, rushing to the tent flap. His eyes scanned the snow-blurred darkness, alert for any Death Eater threat. After a few suffocating seconds of silence, he realized it was only an old pine branch too heavy with snow finally giving way.
He lowered his wand, exhaling a long, weary breath. Behind him, Hermione let out a soft sigh of relief, one hand pressed to her chest to calm her wildly pounding heart fear and unnamed emotions warring inside.
Harry turned back, his gaze clearer now but still filled with sorrow when he saw her trembling. He said:
"Change your clothes, Mione. You'll catch sick."
Hermione nodded mechanically, her shaking hands rising to undo the buttons of her soaked shirt. Harry understood; he immediately turned away, facing the tent entrance, pretending to stand guard but really giving her the privacy she needed.
The rustle of wet fabric filled the tight space the heavy wool jumper sliding off, then the softer sound of thinner layers brushing against skin. Amid the howling wind and falling snow outside, every small noise from right behind him seemed amplified, crashing straight into Harry's ears.
He held his breath. The image of her determined brown eyes and the warmth of her fingers on his face moments ago lingered, tightening his chest. Her words "You are my family" echoed endlessly, warming him even as they tore at his already scarred heart.
"Harry..."
Hermione's voice came softly from behind, gentle and slightly trembling from the cold. He didn't turn right away; it took several seconds to steady his breathing and force himself out of the chaotic thoughts.
"Done?" Harry asked, voice a little rougher.
"Yeah, done."
Harry slowly turned around. Hermione had changed into dry clothes; her bushy hair was slightly tousled, cheeks still faintly flushed from changing in the confined space. Seeing her so small and fragile wrapped in thick layers, a fierce wave of protectiveness surged through Harry.
He stepped to the small bed, picked up the last remaining wool blanket, draped it over her shoulders, and pulled it snug.
"Sit down. Let me relight the blue fire," Harry murmured, avoiding her eyes. "It's going to get even colder tonight."
Hermione obediently sat, watching his back as he muttered the incantation to reignite the flames.
The blue fire flickered to life inside the glass jar, casting an ethereal glow and gentle warmth into the biting cold of the Forest of Dean. Hermione shivered lightly. Instead of staying distant, she scooted closer, slowly leaning her head against Harry's shoulder.
Her eyes drifted half-closed, lashes heavy with the exhaustion that had worn down both body and spirit over the past days. Harry glanced at her quietly, a suppressed sigh escaping his chest. A pang of heartache rose sharply; seeing Hermione this worn out, he understood that her choice to stay meant she had chosen to shoulder this deadly burden alongside him. To him, she had already suffered far too much.
A brilliant girl like her should be in a warm library or a peaceful home not here, amid the wreckage of a friendship that had just shattered.
He raised a trembling hand, gently brushing aside the stray strands of hair across her face so she could sleep more comfortably. Feeling the tender touch, Hermione stirred slightly. Her small hands instinctively sought his, fingers threading between his own, gripping tightly, greedily drawing what little remaining warmth they shared to ward off the encroaching chill.
The tent felt impossibly vast and empty without the third presence. Hermione tugged Harry's hand gently. She lay down on the narrow bed and pulled him down with her, an instinctive search for safety. In the cramped space, they lay on their sides, face to face at an intimate distance. Harry could clearly see the faint freckles across the bridge of her nose and the faint tremor of her lashes in the dim light.
Harry spoke, voice low and rough to preserve the fragile quiet:
"Sleep, Mione. I'll keep watch. I'm not sleepy anyway."
Hermione gazed deeply into Harry's emerald eyes. Though exhaustion weighed her eyelids down so heavily she could barely keep them open, she still whispered with the last shred of alertness she had left:
"We'll take turns, okay? I'll sleep for a few hours, then wake up to keep watch for you."
"Yeah," Harry replied softly, even though deep down he knew he could never bring himself to wake her in the middle of this brutal winter night.
The cold outside still howled through the tent flaps in relentless gusts, but inside the small space, with their hands still tightly intertwined, the loneliness seemed to retreat a little. Hermione closed her eyes, her breathing gradually evening out into a steady rhythm. In the dim darkness, Harry remained awake, his green eyes never leaving her face, silently vowing to protect the only family he had left at any cost.
Harry lay perfectly still, his vigilant eyes fixed on the tent entrance, but his mind was entirely consumed by the warm presence curled against him. He truly couldn't bear to wake Hermione she slept so deeply, her breaths slow and even, a rare moment of peace amid the storm.
In her exhaustion-drenched half-sleep, Hermione instinctively burrowed deeper into Harry's chest, seeking what little warmth remained. Her small, fragile frame fit easily against his broader one, completely enveloped by him. Harry let out a quiet sigh, his arm naturally wrapping around her, pulling her closer. His hand settled on her waist, fingers unconsciously stroking along her spine through the thick wool jumper, soothing her the way one might comfort a wounded child.
Hermione shifted slightly, her legs tangling with his in search of a firmer connection. Her warm breath, carrying the faint scent of herbs and old books that was so distinctly hers, ghosted across the hollow of his throat, making him shiver.
Harry drew in a deep breath, the icy air of the Forest of Dean flooding his lungs but it wasn't enough to extinguish the slow-burning fire inside him. Hermione's body was too soft, every breath she took, every unconscious brush against him felt like an unbearable test of his seventeen-year-old self-control.
He bit his lip hard, forcing his attention toward the howling wind outside to stop his mind from wandering. Harry knew perfectly well that if they weren't fugitives on the run, if the fresh pain of Ron's departure wasn't still raw, his "little brother" would have staged a full-scale rebellion long ago.
The intimate press of skin through thin layers sent blood roaring through his veins, but he could only grit his teeth and endure, tightening his arms around her both to restrain himself and to safeguard this fragile moment of peace they shared. Harry couldn't fall asleep no matter how hard he tried. Every time drowsiness began to pull his heavy lids closed, the softness of Hermione pressed so close would jolt him awake.
Every nerve in his body was strung taut like a bowstring. In the faint gloom of the tent, he could feel every detail: the rhythm of her breath against his chest, the accidental friction of her legs wrapped around his. And then, inevitably, it happened.
"Damn it…"
Harry ground his teeth, cursing inwardly as he felt the unwelcome change below. His "little brother" had begun its enthusiastic protest. The already tight denim of his jeans grew painfully constricting, driving him to the edge of madness.
He grumbled to himself in frustration: In a situation like this, and you're still getting hard? We're being hunted, Ron just left, and we could die any moment!
To calm things down, Harry carefully adjusted his position so Hermione could rest her head more comfortably on his arm, while her own arms still clung tightly around his waist in an instinctive search for protection. He stared up at the tent ceiling, taking deep breaths of the freezing air to cool himself down, then forced his brain to shift focus entirely.
He deliberately conjured the most grotesque images possible: Professor Snape wearing Neville's grandmother's dress with a stuffed vulture hat, or Argus Filch doing a striptease dance with Mrs. Norris. He even tried recalling the horrifying faces of Azkaban Dementors or Voldemort's noseless visage to smother the rising desire.
"Think about Dementors, Harry! Think about the cold when your soul gets sucked out!" he told himself, pushing his mind toward the most extreme psychological revulsion to banish the sensation of her softness pressed so firmly against him.
Harry let out a long, exhausted sigh, sweat beading on his forehead despite the snow outside. He waged an internal war: on one side, the primal pull toward the girl he cared for; on the other, the deliberately traumatic images he conjured to keep himself from crossing any line.
…
The next morning, the gray winter light seeped through the canvas, rousing Hermione from one of the deepest sleeps she'd had in weeks. When she sat up, she froze at the sight of Harry: his eyes sunken, dark circles stark beneath them, gaze dull and distant as though he'd endured twelve straight hours of mental torture.
"Harry… are you okay? You look like you didn't sleep at all…" Hermione asked worriedly, reaching out to touch his forehead and check for fever.
Harry flinched slightly away, rubbing the back of his neck, voice rough from lack of sleep: "I'm fine, Mione. Just… had a bit of trouble sleeping, that's all."
Hermione's eyes dropped to the Horcrux locket lying still on Harry's chest, radiating its dark, oppressive aura. She sighed and held out her hand:
"It's my turn to wear it now. Give it to me you need rest."
Harry nodded, his movements clumsy from fatigue as he unclasped the chain. When the cold metal finally left his skin, he exhaled sharply, though the irritability lingered. The harsh reality pressed in: gnawing hunger, the skin-cutting cold of the Forest of Dean, Ron's sudden departure, and especially the dark magic from the locket that amplified every negative emotion in him tenfold. He wanted to scream, to smash things, to lash out at everything.
Yet every time he looked at Hermione's gaunt, exhausted face, Harry used the last scraps of his reason to clamp down on the monster inside. He kept repeating to himself: "She gave up everything for me. Her parents, her home, and even Ron the person she loved most she left them all to stay with me. I can't be a bastard to her."
But the "bastard" inside Harry was screaming from the vivid hallucinations of the night before. That damned locket had turned his most secret desires into cruelly lifelike scenes.
In the flickering half-dreams, he had seen Hermione straddling him, her wild hair cascading down to partially veil her mesmerizing face. She slowly reached out to touch his chest, then tilted her head with a smile Hermione in real life would never wear. She took his hand, placed it on the soft skin of her body, and whispered:
"You can undress me like unwrapping a present, Harry…"
In that illusion, Harry watched his own hands lift her wool jumper, revealing smooth skin under the dim light. And the most horrifying detail he saw a tiny mole right in the center of her breasts.
Every detail felt impossibly real, making Harry's breath catch. He saw that small mole, like a stray ink dot on her slightly sun-kissed, silky skin. It was a fragile accent in the midst of the enchanting scene, impossible to look away from.
In her dreamlike haze, she showed no hesitation, boldly taking Harry's rough hand and pressing it firmly against the full, soft swell of her breast. The sensation of plump warmth and heat transmitted straight through his palm made Harry suck in sharp, ragged breaths, his chest heaving like a drowning man.
"Harry... don't stop," the voice of Hermione in the illusion murmured, low and seductive.
Her hips kept moving, grinding relentlessly against the straining bulge in his jeans. Her small pink tongue darted out to lick her full lips. She began to rock rhythmically, skillfully, sending Harry's blood boiling like molten lava. The friction, the heat... everything felt on the verge of exploding. Even through layers of fabric, the stimulating rub burned away the last threads of his sanity. He felt himself plunging into an abyss of pleasure and guilt.
"No... this isn't Hermione. This is the Horcrux," he growled inside his mind.
Harry had to bite down so hard his lip bled, digging his nails deep into his palm to drag himself out of the mire of hallucination with physical pain. He was horrified to realize the Horcrux locket didn't just stir hatred it dug up the most primal, naked desires and weaponized them to destroy his mind. He had never imagined this dark magic could turn his closest friend, his dearest sister-like companion, into such an intoxicating poison.
Back in reality, Harry stared at Hermione as she held the chain he had just removed from his neck. His eyes involuntarily flicked to the high collar of her wool jumper, then he jerked his head away, heart slamming like he'd committed a heinous crime.
Fuck! Harry cursed inwardly while watching Hermione busy tidying up. Does she really have a mole there? Or did I just weave it into that sick fantasy?
The mix of curiosity and guilt sent his blood surging again. He couldn't face her for another second without staring at her chest.
"I... I'm going outside to get some water," Harry blurted, then bolted out of the tent.
In the sub-zero cold of the Forest of Dean, Harry found a thin sheet of ice over a puddle. Without hesitation, he smashed it and plunged his face into the freezing water, then dumped scoops of it over his head.
He needed this bone-chilling cold to make his "little brother" stand down, and more importantly, to wash away the sinful images of his best friend haunting his mind.
Harry returned to the tent with a small canteen, his body radiating cold that seemed to freeze the air around him. Wet strands of hair clung to his forehead, dripping steadily onto the damp ground.
The moment Hermione saw him, she let out a small startled cry. She quickly grabbed a nearby dry towel and hurried over. Being much shorter, she had to rise on tiptoe, stretching her slender arms up to drape the towel over his head. The sudden closeness made Harry shiver; from this angle, he had to lean down to meet her eyes. His gaze accidentally skimmed over the rise and fall of her chest as she stretched, making his heart skip a beat.
He sidestepped her busy hands, voice awkward:
"I'm fine, just... slipped and fell into the stream, that's all."
Hermione sighed, lowering her hands and scolding lightly:
"You're such a klutz, Harry. Getting soaked like this in times like these you want pneumonia?"
She turned back to the fire, diligently coaxing the dry wood back to life. The small flames flickered up, bathing her tired but determined face in soft golden light, highlighting her weary yet resolute features.
Hermione sat motionless, brown eyes fixed on the dancing blue flames as if peering into another world. Harry watched her back from behind, intending to ask, "What are you thinking about?" but he stopped himself. A pang of jealousy and bitterness crept in: Maybe she's thinking about Ron. After all, it's because of me that they had to separate.
He swallowed hard, throat dry as sand. Not wanting the twisted fantasies from last night to resurface, Harry mumbled:
"I'm going to catch a bit of sleep."
Hermione gave a small nod, her "Mm" so quiet it nearly dissolved into the wind outside.
Harry lay down on the narrow bed, deliberately turning his back to her. He squeezed his eyes shut, using every ounce of willpower not to turn around. He listened to the crackle of wood and her steady breathing, trying to find peace in a soul riddled with cracks and sinful desire.
Harry fought to regulate his racing breath. His back was rigid as steel; he hated himself for the guilty curiosity still lurking in his mind, hated the reality slowly eroding the purity of their friendship.
The cold from his wet hair seeped through the towel, but the warmth from the fire behind him where Hermione sat felt even stronger. He heard the dry wood pop and snap, the faint rustle of her clothes as she shifted. Every tiny sound became torture to his overloaded nerves.
Across the tent, Hermione still stared into the flickering blue flames. The locket around her neck seemed to grow heavier, radiating oppressive gloom. She wasn't thinking of Ron the way Harry imagined. She was afraid. Afraid that if Harry kept torturing himself like this, he would collapse before they could find the next Horcrux.
"Harry?" she called softly, voice barely audible over the wind.
Harry didn't turn, gripping the blanket edge, throat tight: "Yeah?"
"No matter what happens," Hermione's voice caught, "I will never let go of your hand."
Harry felt his chest constrict. Her words poured like cool water over his soul scorched by desire and guilt. He stayed lying there, back to her, but his eyes flew open in the darkness, acutely aware of her presence just steps away.
"So don't let go of mine either, Harry..."
Hermione added quietly, voice trembling like a petal in the wind, carrying both plea and fear for the uncertain future ahead. She didn't need a hero; she just needed this last remaining friend not to abandon her in the dark.
Harry clenched the blanket tighter. He drew a deep breath, swallowing the surge of emotion in his throat. He still didn't turn around he was terrified that if he looked into her eyes now, every barrier of reason he had painfully built through the night would collapse. He feared she would see the chaos in his gaze, see the primal desires the locket had cruelly unearthed.
Silence enveloped the tent once more, but this time it wasn't heavy or suffocating. That promise felt like an invisible thread binding their two lonely souls together in the cold of the Forest of Dean. Harry closed his eyes; this time, no grotesque images or tiny moles haunted him.
Instead, he saw eleven-year-old Hermione running toward him with arms wide open, beaming brightly and the Hermione of now, who had given up the entire world for him.
Harry listened as his heartbeat gradually steadied. He knew that right behind him was a girl willing to sacrifice her life to protect him. Because of that promise, Harry vowed to himself: he had to be stronger than ever. He had to defeat the dark magic gnawing at his mind, had to protect Hermione not just from Voldemort, but from the darkest, most instinctual parts rising within himself.
In the moment before sleep finally claimed him, Harry silently swore: I will bring her back safely, no matter the cost.
When Harry woke, the first sensation wasn't the biting cold of the Forest of Dean or the oppressive gloom of the Horcrux locket it was a rich, strangely comforting aroma filling the cramped tent. He saw Hermione sitting cross-legged on the ground, her small hands ladling a steaming liquid into a wooden bowl. He rubbed his sunken, sleepless eyes in disbelief as she brought the hot soup right to him. Small pieces of well-stewed meat mingled with wild roots made his stomach growl fiercely after days of gnawing hunger.
"Eat, Harry. You need your strength," she said softly, handing him the steaming bowl.
He stared wide-eyed at the soup, then up at Hermione in suspicion: "What is this, Mione? I mean... we've been out of food for days. Where did you "
"A trap," Hermione replied matter-of-factly, her small hands busy adjusting the flickering blue flames. "When I was little, my grandfather used to take me hunting in the woods."
Harry froze, the spoon hovering mid-air. For the first time in all their years together, he realized he had just glimpsed a hidden, secret corner of his best friend. In his mind, Hermione had always been the quintessential "bookworm" libraries, towering stacks of books, complex potion formulas not a real hunter who could survive in the wild forest.
"I really didn't know about that," Harry muttered.
"It's not very 'feminine' at all, is it?" Hermione said with a small, self-deprecating smile as she added a few more dry sticks to the fire. "When I was little, my Muggle school friends used to tease me for being rough and unladylike, so I decided to hide it completely when I got to Hogwarts. I'd rather everyone think I'm just a bookworm than a kid who knows how to skin animals."
She sighed softly, her brown eyes fixed on the flickering flames:
"My grandfather was a soldier. He was always haunted by war memories, always terrified that one day peace would shatter and his grandchildren wouldn't survive without basic survival skills. So he made me learn whether I wanted to or not."
She gave a quiet sigh, staring intently into the dancing fire:
"Honestly, back then I cried my eyes out more times than I can count. All I wanted was to lie in a warm room and read books, but he'd scoop me up and drag me out into the freezing cold to learn how to set traps and read animal tracks. And now... ironically, the things I hated most back then are saving our lives right now."
Harry watched the steam rise from the bowl, feeling the warmth spread through his palms.
"It's amazing, Mione," he said. "Really. You're the most incredible person I've ever known. I don't know what I'd do without you here."
He took a large spoonful; the rich flavor felt like resurrection after days of hunger. But then Harry paused, curiosity piqued as he glanced at the small pieces of meat in the bowl.
"By the way... what kind of meat is this?"
Hermione paused for a beat, staring into the fire before answering in a flat, emotionless tone:
"Squirrel."
Harry raised an eyebrow; for a split second, images of cute little squirrels scampering on branches flashed in his mind, but he quickly shrugged it off. In their current situation, where hunger could kill faster than any Death Eater's wand, squirrel or dragon it made no difference. He didn't complain, continuing to eat heartily in silence, silently thanking Hermione's "overly cautious" grandfather.
"My grandfather would probably be thrilled to know those torturous lessons from back then are saving his bookworm granddaughter's life," Hermione continued, her voice laced with self-mockery but also quiet pride.
Harry looked at her. In the flickering firelight, Hermione no longer looked like the prim little miss always buried in books at Hogwarts. She was strong, tough, capable. He suddenly realized how much he'd relied on her intellect while overlooking that she'd sacrificed a peaceful childhood to gain these survival skills.
"Thank you," Harry said, his gaze softening, the irritability and grotesque images from last night seeming to fade, replaced by a deep, pure connection. "For not just lying in your room reading books like your grandfather told you not to."
Hermione smiled a real smile, the first in days. She sat down across from him, watching Harry eat. She glanced down at her own hands, where small calluses were beginning to form after days of rough survival in the wild forest, then gave a faint smile as if recalling a memory from another lifetime.
"Actually," she continued, voice quieter, "I did let this side slip a few times before. The results were... people got so scared they nearly fainted, so I swore to myself I'd keep it hidden until now."
Harry raised an eyebrow, spoon pausing mid-air, curiosity piqued. "Who was unlucky enough? Who got the 'honor' of witnessing this hunter side of yours?"
Hermione tilted her head, seeming to debate whether to dredge up that slightly ridiculous past. Finally, she smirked:
"You remember that Ravenclaw boy I once said had intelligent eyes back in third year? The one who always sat in the library corner and used a giant eagle-feather quill?"
"Yeah, I remember," Harry nodded quickly, a strange twinge stirring at the mention of her old crushes. "What about him?"
"Him exactly," she burst out laughing, a rare, bright sound echoing in the tent. "That summer holiday, we had arranged to meet in London to see a film. When he came to pick me up, I was... um, busy in the back garden with my grandfather. You know how he is no warning, just 'practice time' whenever he caught something."
She tilted her head toward Harry, a few curly strands falling to partially hide her flushed cheeks in the firelight. "This stays between us, okay?"
Harry chuckled: "Yeah, I promise."
"I was wearing my grandfather's old leather apron, long gloves covered in blood and fur. I stepped out to open the door still holding a sharp skinning knife, face probably smeared with a few red streaks. You should have seen his face, Harry! Those 'intelligent' eyes I once praised went wide as saucers, mouth hanging open like he'd just seen a Basilisk in our living room. He stammered, couldn't get a word out stared at the knife, at the blood puddle at my feet, then at me like I'd just... um, sacrificed my whole family."
Hermione gestured animatedly with her small hands:
"He didn't even manage a hello just stammered 'Sorry, wrong house!' and bolted for the gate, tripping into the hedge on the way out. That was it no date, no romance, nothing. After that, whenever he saw me in the corridors at school, he'd swerve away like I was about to pull a knife and skin him on the spot."
Harry couldn't hold back he burst into genuine, hearty laughter, the kind that eased the ache in his chest after so many bleak days. "That guy was a real coward. If it were me, I wouldn't have run. I'd have thought it was... kind of cool. A girl who can prepare dinner from scratch? That's reliable as hell."
Hermione glanced at him, brown eyes sparkling with teasing mixed with something soft and touched. She waved the soup ladle at him:
"You're just saying that, Harry. But you wouldn't find it cool at all if you saw me calmly skinning a full-grown deer with a blank face and blood splattered up to my cheeks. My grandfather even said I looked like a proper assassin in those moments."
Harry shrugged, finishing the last spoonful and looking at her with complete trust:
"Maybe. But at least this 'assassin' is keeping me alive with an excellent squirrel soup, and I'd rather be with someone who can skin a deer than some Ravenclaw who runs at the first sight of real life."
The tension between them seemed to dissolve completely. In that moment, the tattered tent in the frigid Forest of Dean felt almost like a real home. With the lingering warmth of squirrel soup still on his tongue, the old radio on the wooden crate suddenly crackled to life with harsh static.
Harry and Hermione froze, eyes locked on the battered metal casing.
Then, cutting through the magical interference, a familiar voice broke through distorted and intermittent, but unmistakably young and determined. It was Ginny.
"...still safe... don't worry everyone... we're still fighting..."
The signal cut off as abruptly as it had appeared, leaving the tent in stunned silence. Hermione was the first to react she let out a small, joyful cry, hands gripping Harry's shoulders tightly in excitement.
"Harry! Did you hear that? It was Ginny! She's okay, the Weasleys are safe... I hope... I hope Ron has..."
Her words faltered midway. The name "Ron" hung in the air, instantly turning joy into a heavy stone pressing on both their chests. She fell silent, her hand slowly sliding from Harry's shoulder. The reality that Ron had left, that he was wandering somewhere out there without their protection, made their fragile hope feel pitifully thin.
Harry bowed his head, staring at their intertwined hands. He said nothing, unable to reveal another truth gnawing at him: he and Ginny had already ended things before this journey began. He'd pushed her away, severed that bond because he didn't want her waiting for a boyfriend who might never return or worse, return in a wooden box. He didn't know what future they had, if any, but hearing her voice now only sharpened the ache inside him.
They fell back into familiar silence, but this time it wasn't the warm silence of understanding it was the silence of unnamed wounds.
They stared together into the flickering fire. Red embers sparked upward and died in mid-air, like their small hopes in this brutal war. Neither spoke again. In the ragged tent amid the cold Forest of Dean, only the wind whistling through branches and their quiet, hidden sighs remained.
Harry silently reached out, his rough fingers slowly covering Hermione's small hand. As their fingers laced tightly together, Harry paused in surprise. He remembered their first years at Hogwarts, when their hands had been almost the same small, childish, unscarred, turning pages together in the library.
Yet in just a few short years, amid this cruel reality, Hermione's hand had become so tiny, fragile, and strangely delicate in his palm.
The warmth from her skin brought a rare moment of peace until Hermione suddenly broke the quiet with a flat, chillingly calm voice.
"Harry... if the Death Eaters ever capture me..."
She paused for a moment, her brown eyes fixed intently on the dying fire, then continued with a steely, resolute determination:
"Never waste your effort looking for me, and never try to trade anything to save my life. The moment they catch me, I will kill myself. I will never let myself become your Achilles' heel, Harry. Absolutely not."
Harry stared at her in shock, his heart feeling as though an invisible hand had just squeezed it. He gripped her hand tightly, his voice trembling with horror mixed with anger:
"What the hell are you saying, Hermione? How can you utter such desperate words? I will never let that happen!"
Hermione turned to look at him, a faint, pale smile appearing on her lips, but her eyes held a ruthless clarity. She tilted her head, her voice slow and calm, as though she were reading a theorem from a textbook:
"You're too kind, Harry. But you can't imagine the horrific things, the most filthy humiliations they would do to a woman if she's captured. Especially a 'Mudblood' like me. They would use me to torture your mind, to force you to reveal yourself, to break your will."
She took a deep breath, her gaze sharp as a blade:
"I would rather die proudly by my own hand than let them violate my body and use me as bait to lure you to your death. This isn't despair, Harry. This is preparation. I've been mentally prepared for this since the day I erased my parents' memories."
Harry stared fixedly at her delicate yet fiercely determined face. His gaze suddenly dropped to the Horcrux locket hanging on Hermione's chest. The dull golden metal seemed to emit a faint black smoke, amplifying the darkest fears into a self-imposed death sentence.
It's that thing again, Harry thought through gritted teeth, his chest heaving with rage. Hermione's resolve was real, but it was Voldemort's dark soul fragment that had stained her thoughts with extremism, pushing her to the brink of brutal sacrifice. He couldn't let her sink deeper into that darkness for even one more second.
He released her hand, but immediately reached out, decisively grasping the cold chain around her neck.
"Give it to me, Hermione. It's my turn to wear it now."
"Harry, I can still bear it..." she tried to push his hand away, but Harry's eyes at that moment were even more resolute than hers.
"Give it to me!" Harry growled, allowing no refusal.
He needed to take back that damned cursed object immediately, because the thought of losing her in the desperate and cold way she had just described was something Harry knew he could never survive. Hermione didn't resist; she let him tremblingly remove the cursed chain from her neck.
But even after the metal imbued with dark magic had left her skin, her eyes remained unchanged. That icy determination still froze in her brown pupils, making Harry feel as though his chest were being crushed.
The anger and fear that had built up all night suddenly exploded.
Harry stood up abruptly, his voice cracking, almost shouting in the cramped space of the tent:
"Damn it, Hermione! Stop talking about death so easily, alright? Do you even know what you're saying?"
He began to lose control of his words, sentences pouring out in a rush as if to fill the terrifying void her words had created. Harry staggered around the tent, both hands tearing at his messy hair, his face flushed red with agitation:
"Who do you think I am? Do you think I could just stand there and watch you kill yourself and then keep hunting these damned Horcruxes? Don't scare me like that anymore! I'm really... I'm really scared to death here!"
"Do you even know what you're saying?! I've lost too many people already, Hermione... I can't stand here and listen to you plan your suicide like it's a given! Don't act like your life isn't as important as this cursed mission!"
His voice choked at the end, both an accusation and an unspoken sob. Harry truly trembled at the thought of seeing Hermione cold and motionless by her own hand it was a nightmare more terrifying than anything Voldemort could create. Harry breathed heavily, his shoulders shaking violently. He wasn't just afraid of Voldemort, not just afraid of the Death Eaters; now he was afraid of the extreme sacrifice of the girl sitting in front of him. He was afraid that his world would completely collapse if Hermione truly disappeared in the cruel way she had outlined.
Hermione quietly bowed her head, her bushy hair hiding her expression. She remained silent for a long time, then softly uttered a small "Mm," like a reluctant concession to soothe Harry's rage. She let the matter pass without further argument, but that silence did nothing to reassure Harry.
Harry slumped down onto the bed, clutching the locket so tightly that its sharp edges cut into his skin painfully. The unease in his heart didn't lessen; it only rose higher, surging like raging waves. A new, dark, and persistent fear began to take root deep within him: the fear that one day he wouldn't be fast enough to protect her from her own bitter choice.
The tent fell silent again, but it was the silence before a storm about to break. Harry looked at Hermione, who now appeared smaller and more fragile than ever under the firelight, and he understood that from now on, he wasn't just fighting for the wizarding world he had to fight to keep her wanting to live. He looked at her, wondering to himself whether he had the strength to hold onto her when the world was doing everything it could to tear her away from him.
Harry stared at Hermione, his eyes no longer filled with explosive anger but shifted to a chilling, terrifying calm.
He clenched his fists tightly, his voice dry and hoarse ringing through the silent tent:
"No, Hermione. I don't believe you."
Hermione snapped her head up, her eyebrows furrowing in wounded pride and irritation. She shot back, her voice rising a tone:
"What did you say? I trust you unconditionally, and yet you're saying you don't trust me, Harry?"
"That's right! Because you talk about death too lightly!" Harry hissed through clenched teeth, his chest heaving like a cornered animal. "I can't trust someone who's planning to kill herself right in front of me. I want an oath."
"What oath?" Hermione asked suspiciously.
"You are not allowed to die."
Hermione let out a dry, mocking laugh full of irritation.
"You're ridiculous, Harry. Even my wanting to die has to ask your permission? Are you trying to control my life too?"
"Yes!" Harry stepped forward, closing the distance between them, his shadow enveloping her under the flickering firelight. "You are not allowed. I forbid it."
Hermione's anger seemed about to erupt, but she froze when she saw Harry's eyes. Those once-strong emerald eyes were now trembling, covered with a thin layer of tears full of despair.
"Please, Mione..." Harry's voice dropped, breaking into fragments. "I... I have no one left. Ron's gone, Sirius is gone, Dumbledore is gone too... I only have you now. I can't, I really can't lose you."
He reached out, grasping her shoulders tightly, as if letting go would cause her to vanish into nothingness.
"You are not allowed to die. I won't die either; I promise you I won't die, I will always find a way back to you. So... please, make an oath with me, alright?"
Silence enveloped the tent, heavy and thick. Hermione looked deeply into Harry's pleading eyes, seeing the utter loneliness screaming inside the young man. The stubbornness in her gradually melted, replaced by an indescribable sorrow. She understood that to Harry at this moment, she was not just a friend she was the last life preserver keeping him from sinking into the abyss of madness.
Hermione pressed her lips tightly together until they turned white, her brown eyes blurring. After a long moment of consideration, she slowly nodded:
"Alright, Harry. I swear. I will never abandon you... I will live."
Harry decisively drew his wand from his pocket, his hand trembling not from fear but from an extreme determination. He didn't want a mere promise that could be blown away by the wind; he needed an unbreakable magical chain. Harry tightly grasped Hermione's hand, pulling her close, demanding that she join him in performing an ancient Blood Oath ritual a soul-binding magic that, once connected, even death could not easily sever their wills.
Hermione pressed her lips until they blanched, her brown eyes boring into Harry as if searching for one last trace of hesitation, but there was none. She slowly placed her hand over his.
"But Harry, remember this... if you die, I won't live alone either. I will follow you. That is the only condition for me to do this."
"Okay," Harry replied. "I won't die. I promise."
He took a deep breath to steady the swirling magic within his body. Harry began murmuring the oath in ancient Latin, his voice echoing in the small tent like a requiem. He swore an unbreakable bond, to stay together forever and never betray, that this soul would protect the other even when the body turned to dust. A brilliant red-orange thread of light, hot as fresh blood, began to flow from the tip of his wand, wrapping tightly around their wrists in successive coils.
But right at the moment when the magic was intersecting at its climax, when their souls were about to touch through the oath, the tent flap was suddenly ripped away by a brutal force. The icy winter wind poured in like a waterfall, carrying with it a tall, dark figure wearing a dull gray leather mask.
The stranger charged in like a black whirlwind. And just as Harry and Hermione's oath reached its final word, that dark shadow also uttered in perfect, eerie unison a powerful ancient incantation, merging grotesquely into the swirling magic of their ritual.
It was clearly not Ron's voice.
The reflexes of the most brilliant witch of their generation surged within Hermione instantly. In the panic of believing they were under attack, she didn't have time to think she drew her remaining wand and unleashed an extremely powerful Repelling Charm. Harry screamed a strangled "No!" because he understood that attacking with magic in the middle of an unfinished blood oath was suicidal, but it was already too late.
BOOM!
A white-green shockwave explosion erupted from the epicenter where the three streams of magic collided. The terrifying backlash hurled all three of them in different directions like rag dolls. The tent swayed violently, furniture was torn apart, and Hermione's potion vials shattered into pieces.
Harry slammed the back of his head hard against a wooden tent pole; a sharp, brain-piercing pain made his vision blur rapidly. In the final moment before darkness completely swallowed his consciousness, Harry saw the dark figure collapse sprawling onto the cold ground, the hood thrown back by the blast.
Under the flickering remnants of the scattered firelight, a lock of platinum-blond hair gleamed brightly, cold as ice, falling across the ground and partially obscuring a pale face.
Malfoy...?
That was the last thought that flashed through Harry's mind before he blacked out completely. The blood oath had been completed but in a twisted, aberrant way that no one could have foreseen.
