Take it slow

Summary:

It was a few years after the war, Snafu worked at a lumber mill now and he would often work long shifts that went into the night. He made friends with the people he worked with, he always made a friend or two wherever he went, and they’d go out for drinks or dinner every so often and tonight was one of those nights. He’d always make sure to let you know in the morning when he knew about the plan or call if it was made that day and he always made it home just on time but you were usually asleep by that time anyway, and tonight was just like any other night.

Notes:

This is my first ever public work. I'm not a writer, I don't often write for fun, and I'm not confident that any of my writing is really good (putting myself down before this even startssss im a chuddd), but I just wanted to get this little one shot that I've had in my docs out of my system.

Work Text:

It was a few years after the war, Snafu worked at a lumber mill now, and he would often work long shifts that went into the night. He made friends with the people he worked with, he always made a friend or two wherever he went, and they’d go out for drinks or dinner every so often, and tonight was one of those nights. He’d always make sure to let you know in the morning when he knew about the plan or call if it was made that day, and he always made it home just on time, but you were usually asleep by that time anyway, and tonight was just like any other night.

He told you that morning that he was going out with his friends for drinks. You asked who, he said those same three names you could never remember, he’d kiss you on the cheek, and was soon on his way. During the day you mostly worked, you’d leave to stock shelves at your local grocery store later and get home before him. You made dinner, ate alone, and left a covered plate for him on the dining table and went to sleep.

You were having a hard time falling asleep tonight, as you usually did when he wasn’t home. You weren’t worried about something like someone breaking in or anything, you were totally capable of defending yourself, Snaf taught you how to use a gun after all, and he’d always make sure you had some kind of weapon in the bedside tables. You had terrible paranoia when it came to him, and he was aware of it. He would always make sure to come home on time so he wouldn’t cause you any extra stress. You tried reading when this problem came along, and he even got you some books of your favorite genre, ‘how thoughtful’ you thought to yourself while putting down the second book in a series you mentioned you liked to him on your bedside table. You were too tired for your eyes to focus on the words on the paper, so you gave up trying to read for tonight. It was about time to get some rest. Just as you closed your eyes, you heard the front door unlock, open, shut, and lock. You look up at the clock and realize you’ve been awake the whole time he was out, and it was close to midnight now, later than his usual arrival time. You didn’t want him thinking you were awake waiting for him this whole time (this isn’t the first time this happened, and last time he was swearing he wouldn’t go out again just because you weren’t going to sleep at a normal hour. You didn’t want to take away this little thing from him; you didn’t want him to worry so much about you like you were a child. You somehow managed to convince him you kept having night terrors that would wake you up).

You fake slept, of course, flipping over so you’d face away from the bedroom door and shut your eyes tight. You hoped you’d fall asleep before he finished eating dinner and came upstairs but you didn’t. By the time he dragged his way up the stairs into your shared bedroom, you were still half awake. You heard him walk in as he dragged his feet, changed into his pajamas, felt his weight when he sat on the edge of the bed for a moment before lying down next to you, and made his way under the covers. He carefully slid next to you, not wanting to wake you up, slowly wiggling closer and closer to you till he could wrap his limbs around you. his leg around yours and his arm around your waist. He softly kissed the back of your head and mumbled sweet nothings that you could barely make out.

Even though you two had been together for almost three years, you still couldn’t hide how much you fell for him and his little jesters. No matter how tight you shut your eyes, you couldn’t fight the urge to turn your body around to face him and whisper your own sweet nothings back to him, so you did. acting as if you had just woken up, you turned to him, pretending to blink your eyes open and awake before you smiled at him. He backed his face away enough for him to see your whole face, his eyes darting all over yours, half open and smiling “did i wake you, sweetheart?” you gave him a peck on the nose as it was the closest thing to your lips “maybe.. but i don’t mind” you lied, you knew he knew you were lying but you also knew he was happy to get to talk to you after a long day “how was your day?” you whispered, he shut his eyes momentarily and laughed softly “that bad?” you laughed along with him “just… draining…” his words slurred slightly, pushing the words out, like doorknobs falling out of his mouth. You forgot he was getting drinks with his friends. “How many drinks did you have, Snaf? You must’ve had straight alcohol if your words are slurring." "not thatt many…” he hugged you tighter, his hands around your waist and his legs slowly making their way to fully wrap around yours, his head on your chest. You smiled and pet his head, running your hands through his hair.

For the years you two have been together, you have never seen him this clingy besides your honeymoon, but then again, you've never seen him this drunk. “How did you even manage to get home in your condition?” You started to relax and lie back down fully. “David drove…” he mumbled into the crook of your neck as his head nuzzled deeper into your skin, pulling you closer. One of the names you would hear of, but never really knew who he was. “Did you do something you’ll regret later while at the bar?” you joke. “Look at you, you must be guilty of something!” he giggled and picked his head up before plopping it on the pillow next to yours. His eyes meet yours. "I'll say… I had a few more drinks than I usually let myself have. I think I'll regret that tomorrow. But that’s tomorrow's problem.” You smiled back at him and ran your fingers through his short hair, basically rubbing his scalp.

You two smile at each other and start to shut your eyes. “I’m sorry I kept you up this long, babydoll..” you opened your eyes and shook your head “no.. no… you didn't…” you softly mumbled back. You cupped your hand around his cheek, bringing his face up to meet yours and kissing his forehead before shutting your eyes again and slowly drifting off to sleep.
