Paul's Only Weakness

Summary:

Paul Shinji's wife, Dawn, is the only person who knows his greatest weakness. Unfortunately for him, she shows their friends during their annual vacation that involves the Ketchums, Oaks, and Haydens. Rated T due to one sentence and implied scene. Ikarishipping one-shot!

Work Text:

When one thinks of Paul Shinji, they don’t expect him to have any weaknesses. Some people might say his wife Dawn is a weakness, but Paul argues she isn’t one when she’s a strong trainer. How can someone strong be his weakness? If anything, she’s added strength to the fearsome Sinnoh Champion. Although, Dawn does know of Paul’s only weakness.

“You guys have got to check out this picture!” giggles the bluenette to her friends. She is showing her pokenav screen to Leaf Oak, Misty Ketchum, and May Hayden as her three friends giggle. The scowling purple haired man has his arms crossed with a slight pink tint on his cheeks as he knows his wife is embarrassing him.

“Let me see!” Drew snickers as he tries to catch a peek of the photo.

“Oh boy! Send it to me!” Gary laughs once Dawn pans the pokenav his direction.

Through tears, Ash exclaims, “I can’t believe it!”

Paul grabs his wife’s arm and pulls her back on her chair. The 4 couples are on their yearly group dinner date. This time, they are in Sinnoh as it is the Shinji’s turn to plan the weekend events. “Stop showing them that already!” He hisses angrily at her.

“No way, Dawn! Let me see it again!” Gary croaks out through his laughter and Drew hangs onto the brunette as he laughs with him. Paul’s scowl deepens, especially when Misty tries to stand up for him but cracks up halfway through. Arceus, why is he friends with these people? Why does he even have friends? Oh yeah, because he married this troublesome woman.

Fortunately, Leaf smacks her husband’s head to get him to stop his teasing. “I have worse things on you, Gary.” He seems to swallow a large gulp as he instantly stops laughing.

“What? You got to share now, Leaf!” Drew snickers as he shoves Gary’s shoulder.

“Babe, don’t,” Pleads the spiky brunette to his wife who rolls her eyes.

“You can’t be laughing when you split your pants trying to show Rose how to do a cartwheel.” May tells the green haired man whose grin quickly falls.

“It’s okay, girls! I just wanted to show you guys how sweet Paul can be. He always looks like such a grump.” Dawn smiles while pinching one of Paul’s cheeks. He glares at the group with an unamused look.

“That’s not Paul!” Ash is coming down off of his laughter high.

Misty quickly covers her husband’s mouth as she is coming off of hers too. “Paul, it’s okay.” She manages to stop laughing and gives him an apologetic smile. “You know I have plenty of dirt on Ash if he ever makes fun of you again.”

Said man nervously looks at his wife with a sheepish grin. “Aw, Mist, c’mon-”

“I got lots too.” Gary chimes in.

“Same here!” Leaf includes, and Ash groans. Leave it to him to know all of these people.

Paul hasn’t said a single thing during this whole ordeal. Everyone has since calmed down except for his giggling wife besides him who keeps looking at her pokenav. His scowl deepens. She just loves making fun of him. “Okay, bye.” He abruptly gets up and grabs her arm to drag her out of her seat.

The bluenette quickly glances at her friends while Paul pulls her away, “See you tomorrow!” She exclaims and waves her free arm at them.

Once in the car, Paul slams the door shut as he starts the car. Dawn is still giggling at the photo beside him, which makes him scowl more. “Can you stop laughing?” He annoyedly asks her while they drive home.

She looks over at him and gently pecks his cheek. “Aw. Does big bad grumpy Paul not want anyone to know he has a soft spot?”

He groans as she mocks him. “I don’t get why you had to show them.”

“They were making fun of you, so I had to prove them wrong.” she shrugs.

“You made it worse.”

“Well, it hurt my pride hearing them say you’d be a scary father.” the woman pouts.

“I’d rather them think I be a terrible father than a giant Lopunny.” he grumbles.

At the mention of the Pokemon, Dawn looks back at her pokenav and giggles again, much to her husband’s dismay. There, Paul is dressed as a giant Lopunny for his niece Abby’s birthday. She is Reggie’s and Maylene’s 3 year old daughter who happened to be sick on her birthday, so she couldn’t have a party. Being a sad and sick 3 year old, she cried all morning. Paul, the caring and protective uncle, took it upon his stone cold heart to make his little niece feel better. She loves Lopunny’s so that would work, right? Well, it did work, and so did Dawn’s pokenav camera after Paul had specifically told everyone no pictures. Not only does Dawn have a picture on her pokenav, but Abby has one hung up in her room.

He groans again as the bubbly bluenette laughs louder. This all started because May announced that her and Drew are expecting. Ash and Misty already have a 1 year old daughter, and the Oaks have a 1 year old son. Thus, making the Shinjis the only childless couple, which resulted in the other men making fun of Paul being a scary father. They even said the Shinji’s can’t conceive because Dawn’s eggs are scared of Paul’s sperm.

Paul scowls at the thought. His friends are annoying. Friends that his troublesome wife brought into his life. It’s not like they can’t conceive, but rather him and Dawn have just been too busy with their hectic lives. Plus, Paul doesn’t feel ready to share his wife with anyone yet.

A warm hand shakes him from thought as Dawn’s left hand envelopes his right. He brings the hand up to his lips and kisses it near her wedding ring. He loves this woman. He’ll do anything for her, even allow her to embarrass him in front of their friends. They pull into their driveway, and Dawn says, “Can we have a baby?”

Did Paul just think he’ll do anything for her? He’s not ready for that yet. Having a baby will just take up Dawn’s attention, and as much as he loves his niece, he gets quite jealous when she’s given more attention by the bluenette than him. Scowling, he says, “No.”

And she looks up at him with those pleading blue eyes he loves and hates at the same time because they always manage to get him to commit to things he normally wouldn’t...like marriage. “But the Ketchum’s and Oak’s kids get to grow up together! Our kid and the Hayden's can be the same age too!”

“That’s a dumb reason to have a kid.”

“What’s your reason to not have a kid?” She asks as they walk into the house.

“They’re troublesome.”

“You say I’m troublesome, and you married me.”

“I can deal with one troublesome person. Two might kill me.” He sits on their bed to take his shoes off.

Dawn takes off her jewelry before asking him to unzip her dress. “You never know until you try.”

“And if I try and it does kill me, it’s too late because it’s not like we can just return the kid.” He takes off his tie.

“Actually, the guys were wrong.” Dawn says as she slips out of her dress and faces him. “Your kids won’t be scared of you. It seems like you’ll be scared of your kids.” A playful smirk tugs on her lips while he unbuttons the last button on his shirt.

“I’m scared of no one, troublesome.” he gruffly replies. Did this woman just challenge him?

In only her black underwear, she walks directly in front of him and looks up into those annoyed grey eyes. With a quick peck to his lips, she says, “Prove it.”

1 Year Later

“You guys have got to check out this picture!” giggles the bluenette to her friends. She is showing her pokenav screen to the group of friends as they are on Gary’s yacht in the Orange Islands. Paul groans while cradling the 2 month old in his arms. He already knows which picture his wife is showing them.

The friends laugh while teasing the grumpy purple haired man, which he is now used to. On Dawn’s pokenav is a photo of Paul trying to feed their daughter with a bottle, but he didn’t know how; thus, he video called Dawn. The woman breastfeeds, so the baby wouldn’t take the bottle by hand. Paul had managed to get her to drink it when he pinned the bottle against his pec and the baby’s mouth, which makes it look like he’s breastfeeding a milk bottle to the newborn.

The grouchy man looks down at his sleeping daughter and smiles. Dawn can show them that picture. She can show them any picture. He’s not scared of anyone or anything because Paul Shinji’s only weakness is his greatest strength: making his family happy.
