Chapter Text
The Ruins of Iacon do not scream; they wheeze. Under the bruised, violet sky of Cybertronian dusk, the air is thick enough to choke a standard ventilation system. It tastes of ionized ozone and the bitter, chalky powder of pulverized marble. Every step taken by the titans locked in the center of the plaza sends up a plume of history—the powdered remains of libraries and senate halls.
Optimus Prime has Megatron pinned. It is a position he has achieved perhaps a dozen times in four million years, and yet it feels novel every time. The Prime’s weight is a crushing constant, his massive ceramic-plated knees driving Megatron back against a crumbling obsidian pillar. Optimus’s energon axe is a scream of light in the dimness, the leading edge humming with a high-frequency vibration that sheds sparks against Megatron’s throat cables. One inch closer, and the silver gladiator’s head would be a souvenir for the scrap heaps.
But Megatron is not a bot who accepts a conclusion easily. His fusion cannon is a dead-weight pressure against Optimus’s midsection, the massive barrel glowing with a menacing, pre-ignition violet. The whine of the charging capacitors is a rising tea-kettle hiss, vibrating through Optimus’s spark-chamber.
"You’re late with that swing, Prime," Megatron rasps. The voice is like tectonic plates grinding against each other. His optics—crimson pits of ancient, banked fires—flicker with a strange, dark amusement that makes the cooling fans in Optimus’s back spin faster. "Your timing is off. Or perhaps... you’re hesitating because of the date?"
Optimus narrows his optics, the blue light sharpening into needles. His vents cycle heavily, a rhythmic chuff-whirr that betrays the strain of keeping a warlord pinned. "I do not hesitate for dates, Megatron. Only for the hope that you might finally see reason. That you might look at these ruins and realize what your 'revolution' has bought us."
"Liar," Megatron chuckles.
The sound is a deep, mechanical vibration that rattles both of their chassis, a shared resonance that exists only between them. "It’s the sixteenth decacycle of the Vorn. Four million years to the day, Orion. Four million years since a lowly data clerk walked into a grease-slicked gladiator pit in Kaon and told me I had 'interesting ideas' about social reform. You were wearing a yellow maintenance hazard stripe then. Do you remember?"
The world stops.
It isn't just that the two leaders go still; it’s as if the very rotation of the planet hit a snag. The high-pitched whine of the energon axe drops a full octave, then another, until it is a mere low-frequency thrum. Optimus slowly, almost tentatively, pulls the blade back. The orange glow recedes from Megatron’s silver throat.
"I didn't think you remembered the exact cycle," Optimus says softly. The "Prime" persona—the voice that can rally a million dying soldiers—fractures, revealing the soft, inquisitive tones of the archivist he used to be. "You were busy trying to decapitate a turbofox at the time. I believe you were bleeding from three different coolant lines."
"It was a challenging fight," Megatron mutters.
To the shock of every optic sensor currently trained on them, Megatron actually lowers the fusion cannon. The violet glow fades into a dull, cooling charcoal. He steps away from the pillar, the obsidian groaning as it is released from the pressure. With an almost casual grace, he brushes a shard of debris from his shoulder armor, as if they were two nobles meeting at a gala rather than two monsters in a death match.
"But your spark was... brighter then," Megatron continues, his voice dipping into a nostalgic rasp. "Less weighed down by the 'Matrix of Leadership' and all that insufferable self-righteousness. You were just a bot who thought books could change the world."
"And you were more than just a tyrant," Optimus says. He steps forward, his voice dropping into that deep, resonant tone—the one that feels like a warm engine hum on a cold night. "You had a spark for justice, Megatron. A fire that didn't just burn things down, but lit the way. I miss that bot. Every single cycle, I look for him."
The silence radiating outward from the center of the ruins is infectious. It is a digital contagion of pure bewilderment.
Forty yards away, Bumblebee is frozen in mid-air. He had been performing a high-velocity leap intended to drop-kick a Seeker into a scrap-well. Now, he just sort of... slides off the Seeker's wing, landing awkwardly on his pedes. Nearby, Starscream has his null-rays leveled at Optimus’s exposed back. This is his moment. The killing blow. The glory. And yet, he finds himself lowering his arms, his wings twitching in a rhythmic display of physical discomfort. It’s too weird. It’s too personal. It’s like watching your creators argue about the household budget in the middle of a supernova.
"Are they... are they reminiscing?" Bumblebee whispers over the local comms to Arcee, who is crouched behind a pile of rebar. "Is this a trick? Should I shoot? I feel like I should shoot."
"If you shoot now, Bee," Arcee says, her voice flat with a mix of awe and horror as she lowers her arm-blades, "I think they’ll both turn around and kill you. Just... stay still. Don't even blink."
High above on a jagged ledge, Starscream finally snaps. "Oh, for the love of the Allspark! Just blast him, Megatron! He’s standing right there! His spark-chamber is practically begging for a fusion bolt! The monologue can wait for the victory parade!"
Soundwave, standing like a silent blue sentinel behind a fallen statue, tilts his head. His chest plate displays a flickering waveform of the leaders' vocal patterns. "Observation: Emotional resonance detected," the monotone voice drones. "Logical course of action: Uncertain. Probability of violence: Dropping. Probability of... awkwardness: 100%."
Megatron looks around. He sees his Seekers hovering like confused gnats; he sees the Autobots staring with their mouths literally agape. He looks back to Optimus, and for the first time in an age, the mask of the Warlord slips. He sighs—a heavy, mechanical sound of genuine, weary regret.
"They don't understand, Orion," Megatron says, his voice private and low. "They see the crowns and the cannons. They see the symbols we've become. They don't see the foundation we built this nightmare on."
Optimus steps closer. It is a move that should trigger every defensive reflex Megatron possesses, but he remains still. Optimus places a massive, blue-plated hand on Megatron’s silver shoulder. It isn't a grip meant to pin or harm; it is a steadying weight, an anchor in the storm of their own making.
"The foundation is still there, Megatron," Optimus says. "Deep beneath the rust and the energon-spill. It is waiting for us to stop digging."
For a long minute, the war simply ceases to exist. There are no factions, only two titans of history, lost in the memory of a conversation in a dirty pit four million years ago. The smoke drifts between them like ghosts.
"Same time next Vorn?" Megatron asks, his optics flashing with a hint of the old, wicked challenge.
"I wouldn't miss it," Optimus replies.
Megatron barks a laugh—a harsh, metallic sound that startles a nearby flock of mechanical scavengers. He suddenly transforms, his body folding and clicking into his massive tank alt-mode. He doesn't aim at an Autobot. Instead, he blasts a nearby, unoccupied rock spire, the explosion showering the area in sparks and giving his troops a plausible reason to move.
"DECEPTICONS! RETREAT!" Megatron’s voice booms through the ruins. "THE ATMOSPHERE HERE HAS BECOME... UNACCEPTABLE! WE LEAVE THIS FILTHY GROUND!"
Back at the Autobot Base, the "vibe" has officially shifted into territory that requires several internal reboots for everyone involved. Optimus Prime is sitting on a repair berth in the med-bay. He isn't actually injured, but Ratchet is hovering over him, his welding tools held like weapons as he aggressively scans Optimus’s processor.
"Optimus, I’m looking for a logic virus," Ratchet growls, his optics narrowed. "I’m looking for a parasitic brainworm. You had him! Your axe was at his throat! Why did you start discussing anniversaries?"
Optimus stares wistfully at a holographic map of old Cybertron projected on the wall, his optics tracking the ghost-lines of the Kaon district. "It was a significant solar cycle, Ratchet. The sparks of the past light the path to the future. Megatron… he remembers. He remembers the way the light hit the smelting pits. He has a poet's spark, buried under layers of fusion-grade steel."
Bumblebee, standing by the door, begins beeping frantically, his door-wings flapping. [He’s a war criminal, Optimus! He tried to turn the moon into a giant laser last Tuesday! He killed Cliffjumper! He’s literally the reason we don't have a home!]
Optimus sighs heavily, the sound echoing in the sterile room. "True. But he also used to share his fuel rations with me when I was a lowly clerk, and my servos were locking up from the cold. There is a duality to him, Bumblebee. A... dark, magnetic charm. I believe, in his own way, he was asking me if I still cared."
Arcee leans against the wall, her arms crossed. "And what did you say, 'Orion'?"
"I told him I wouldn't miss our next meeting," Optimus says, a small, terrifyingly fond smile touching his face-plate. "It was... quite moving. Does anyone have any spare polish? High-gloss? I want my chest plates to be particularly reflective for our next 'clash'. First impressions are vital."
The Autobot Consensus: They are 90% sure Optimus is being held hostage by a midlife crisis, and 10% sure they are now fighting a war for their leader’s "ex."
At the Decepticon Base, the mood is even worse.
Megatron is pacing the throne room. The sound of his pedes hitting the floor is like a funeral drum. He hasn't yelled at anyone in twenty minutes, which—for the Decepticon high command—is more terrifying than a firing squad.
Starscream is vibrating with indignant rage, his wings nearly vertical. "Explain it to me, oh Mighty Leader! You had the Prime dead to rights! Instead, you stopped for a stroll down memory lane? Was it the 'anniversary' of the day you lost your mind?!"
Megatron stops abruptly, turning to face the Seeker. His optics are cold, but there’s a flicker of something else behind them. "It is called psychological warfare, Starscream. You wouldn't understand. By reminding the Prime of our shared history, I... destabilized his combat subroutines. I created a recursive loop of sentimentality that lowered his tactical efficiency by twelve percent."
"You were touching his shoulder!" Starscream shrieks. "You looked like you were about to invite him for high-grade oil and a sunset! You were blushing through your cooling vents!"
"I was... checking the integrity of his armor," Megatron growls, his hand twitching toward his cannon. "For future tactical exploitation. And his 'spark brightness' is a technical term for his power levels. Obviously. I was performing a field audit."
Soundwave, standing in the corner, suddenly activates his external speakers. He plays back a crystal-clear recording of Megatron’s own voice: "I miss that bot—Optimus Prime. I wouldn't miss it—Megatron."
The silence that follows is thick enough to weld.
"Soundwave," Megatron says, his voice a dangerous whisper. "Delete that file immediately, or I will smelt you into a toaster and use you to brown my morning energon-slabs."
Lugnut, the massive extremist, suddenly drops to his knees, his single eye leaking lubricant. "MY GLORIOUS LEADER IS SO MIGHTY HE HAS EVEN CONQUERED THE HEART OF HIS GREATEST ENEMY! TRULY, HIS ROMANCE IS THE PUREST IN THE COSMOS! I SHALL WRITE AN ODE TO THIS NOBLE COURTSHIP!"
"IT’S NOT ROMANCE, LUGNUT! IT’S A STRATEGY!" Megatron roars, finally finding his temper. "Now... someone find me that data-slug of Pre-War Poetry. The one from the third dynasty. I need it for... research. On how to crush his spirit with the weight of his own failures. Yes. Research."
The Decepticon Consensus: They are 100% sure Megatron is "courting" the enemy, and Starscream is already drafting a memo to the recruitment office about whether the Decepticon logo needs to include a heart or a bouquet of wilted circuit-flowers.
