Hawks stood before the one way mirror, or more aptly, behind it. Despite this not being his first visit, he was yet to stand on the other side of the wide, imposing glass. In the room with him were a couple of quiet technicians (they never bothered Hawks, never questioned his intentions), a desk of robust computers, and several large monitors. Security cameras played live footage of the room on the other side of the glass, the hallway leading to said room, the exterior of the building, and the room in which Hawks stood. When he looked at the screen, he saw the back of his head, his hair cut closer than usual to accommodate moisturizing his newly earned burn scars, and the neatly ironed back of his black suit. Other monitors displayed vitals: heartrate, body temperature, blood pressure, hemoglobin levels, etc.
On the other side of the glass, a high-ceilinged room housed Dabi, kept alive in his metal and glass tube. His body looked awful—enough so that Hawks found him hard to look at, some days. His skin was clean burned off, revealing the marred muscle and tendon beneath. His own fire had burned his right arm into dust, and only the tapered end near his shoulder remained. Without a proper face, his eyes glowed big and round, their white and blue like lights in the darkness of his pod.
The eerie tableaux unsettled Hawks as much as it depressed him. Coming here, visiting Dabi, it did not help him move on or settle his feelings. There was no closure gained. He stared down futility personified, and every time he did so, his heart sunk further into despair.
The frigid air in the facility didn’t help. Every hair on his body stood on end in this place, and that prickling feeling made him anxious.
Today, Todoroki Shouto was visiting. Notably, Shouto did not know Hawks was also visiting. None of their family knew about Hawks’ visits. As President of the Hero Public Safety Commission, Hawks felt entitled to his right to visit the criminal, and to his secrecy.
“Any changes today?” asked Hawks, knowing the answer. Steady decline, not much time left. In Dabi’s room, Shouto showed his older brother a bowl he made. The kid was getting into ceramics. When he spoke, his voice echoed around the cement walls. A microphone picked it up so the tech room could hear, but the labcoats in here kept the volume down. They didn’t need to listen to all the tragic family conversations.
The lead technician cleared his throat. “Mr. President, sir…”
“Hawks is fine, I told you that.” He liked to stay casual for these check ins. It helped offset the futility of the whole thing.
The man pointed to a screen showing some numbers that didn’t add up to anything meaningful, at least, not to Hawks. “His blood pressure and hemoglobin levels have improved this week, and his average temperature started declining. He’s coming out of the constant fever his quirk and burns induced.”
Hawks stared at the man.
The doctor blinked rapidly, his eyes flicking back and forth. His fingers flexed erratically, nervous tension pulling at his extremities.
In response to the twitchy tech, Hawks tilted his head, silently asking for more.
“We don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up, but… well, he’s always been a very determined villain, if nothing else.”
Beyond the glass, Shouto said his goodbyes to Dabi. To Todoroki Touya.
“Thank you for the information, and thank you for keeping the expectations realistic,” said Hawks. Then, he strode out of the room with practiced confidence. Practice was the only thing guiding him, a well-formed habit of acting like more than he felt in any given moment. He exited the technician’s room, entered the hallway, and made a right turn Hawks hadn’t allowed himself to make in all these visits to the hospital. He swung open the door to Touya’s dedicated room, every muscle in his face held tight.
“Oh, look who decided to visit little old me,” drawled Touya, his voice quieter and more gravelly than it sounded before the war.
Hawks ignored Touya’s jeers, he just wanted to bait Hawks. He pulled the same tactic on Endeavor time and again. Hawks walked right up to the tube that he’d assumed Touya would die in, placed his hands on the glass and said, “I don’t think you're weak-willed enough to die in there.”
Despite Touya’s face being nothing more than muscle and tendon held together by a steel contraption, Hawks thought he deciphered a smile there. A grateful one.
“Who the hell said I was weak?”
Touya took a year and half to get free of all hospitals. He went through three–the intensive care in the tube, then a new facility where he lay bedridden and had limited visiting hours, and after that a rehabilitation center with somehow even stricter visiting times. His family rarely saw him. Hawks saw him less, even acting as the HPSC President.
In the meantime, Hawks kept himself busy. His job alone filled his time, working to restructure guidelines and requirements for heroes and students alike. Outside of his official position, he volunteered with quirk counseling programs, offering input for their own restructuring efforts. He lobbied for funding, he wrote essays and opinion pieces advocating for further change. And when he made it home, he had a teenager to keep him busy.
“Keigo, can we please order more sweets with the groceries? Berries are good but they do not count! I’m talking real treats, like ice cream!” Toga Himiko lay across their living room couch, her feet dangling over the armrest. She never could sit properly, but then again, neither could Hawks. He thanked growing up with wings for that; Toga claimed it was just “being gay.”
“Fine, fine, but my assistant keeps getting on my case. She thinks I need to watch my health.”
“She just doesn’t know you’re actually a teen girl, and we need ice cream! And blood,” she tacked on, motioning for his arm.
Hawks had favored wearing long sleeves ever since taking in Toga. She tended to leave some pretty conspicuous marks on his wrist, and he still hadn’t told anyone she survived. As president, he gave the grave news: the wicked witch is dead. Several witches. All for One, Shigaraki Tomura, Toga Himiko.
Two of those were lies.
Only one other person knew the truth. He trusted All Might, though. The guy knew how to lock down information. And Hawks couldn’t handle having two roommates.
Toga sank her two fanged teeth into his arm, the sting of the bite now familiar. She never drank much, far less than the pint one would lose donating the standard way. The draw felt warm and kind of relaxing. It made for a nice way to wind down on the odd evening, even if he had to limit how often he let her drink from him.
As she drank, it dawned on him that he hadn’t enough water today. His mind started to numb and he leaned back, trying to cushion his dizzy head. Toga pulled her mouth off and asked, “You okay, Keigo?”
He replied, “I think I forgot to drink water this afternoon. Sorry, Toga.”
She smacked her lips, then licked them clean. Her tongue ran over her teeth, tasting the last drops of his blood. “That’s okay, thank you for letting me have a little.” She smiled softly at him, the warm, forlorn look she’d worn since the war.
“Fuyumi asked me why I keep coming round to Touya. Their mom was there, Rei. That woman is too nice to me. Anyway, it was awkward. I think she was just curious, but I hesitated. It’s been on my mind.”
With a slow nod of understanding and a considerate hum, Toga began cleaning and bandaging his wrist where she’d bit down. “How is Touya?” she asked, her voice quiet.
“He’s walking. He’s going home next week.”
“When can I see him?”
His mouth went dry. Just like with Fuyumi, he didn’t know how to answer that. After all, he’d yet to tell Touya about Toga, or Shigaraki for that matter.
Hawks’ teacup piped hotly cradled between his hands. Touya sat across from him amidst a pool of blankets wearing cozy black sweats. His hair waved in soft, white snow drifts over his eyes and the tips of his ears. He’d been home for merely two weeks and yet he looked as natural in this home as the lilies growing in the koi pond just outside this room.
“Nice to be home?” Hawks asked.
Touya scoffed. “No? But it’s better than hospitals.”
He looked content, though. No frown tugged at his face, no tension in his shoulders. If Hawks didn’t know better, he’d say Touya was high. More than a few of Hawks’ visits to Touya’s rehab found the guy spaced out on ketamine. But he’d been off pain meds for a few months, only taking them as needed. The guy was just happy.
“How about you, Mr. President? How’s your one-bedroom these days?”
Hawks took a deep breath. Touya quirked an eyebrow, thinking something playful or stupid was coming, certainly. But Hawks had something big, something he’d been holding out on. “It’s actually a two-bed.”
Touya took this the wrong way. “Oh–huh. Keigo, I’m… I have to live… At least for a while…”
“No, no.” Hawks shook his head, his mind stalling when he needed it most. It tended to behave poorly around Touya. “I have a roommate.”
“What? Since when?” Touya laughed. He still didn’t realize what Hawks was getting at.
Hawks glanced at the door, and finally, Touya got the idea that something interesting was coming. Something Hawks preferred go unheard by the rest of the Todoroki family. Touya leaned in, the blankets falling behind him in muted thwumps. His eyes narrowed as he listened, curious and more than a little suspicious. He had the right to be.
Hawks’ scar itched under his chin.
“Nothing to be jealous of! Just… thought you’d want to know. She’s, well, she’s a handful, but I’m happy to have her.” With deliberate, well-trained movements–Hawks did not shake and twitch under pressure–he st down his tea and shoved his sleeve up. He began unwrapping Toga’s well-wrapped gauze, the soft fabric falling to the tatami floor and revealing two burgundy dots half-healed over his blueish-greenish veins.
Hawks met Touya’s bright blue eyes. They matched Hawks’, wide with surprise and understanding. For a moment, Hawks flashed back to those eyes, wide and alive in that dark metal and glass tube.
As Touya processed the truth, Hawks delivered the second revelation. “All Might has a roommate too—I think the old guy’s been learning a lot about League from him.”
Hawks expected shock. Maybe upset–why hadn’t he told Touya sooner? Why keep the secret for a full year and a half? Hawks had all the answers prepared: too many cameras, too many witnesses. Doctors and nurses and quirk healers and family members were always about. But after Touya came to terms with the news, his glassy eyes turned on Hawks with a strange fervor.
“I can’t believe you,” Touya breathed.
“Well, you see–”
Hawks didn’t get to explain his well practiced answers, because Touya tackled him. Luckily, the tatami mat was soft below.
Touya kissed him. With soft, wrinkly scars across his face, he kissed him. They’d shared pecks, chaste moments when no one else was in the room. Whispers in each other’s ears, gentle touches when eyes were turned away from them. That was the only options as Touya walked his long road to recovery.
Today, Touya was not being gentle. Or chaste. His tongue prodded at Hawks’ mouth with intention, desire. Hawks anticipated a lot of things from saying, “Hey, your dead friends are actually alive and one of them has actually been my roommate who I let drink my blood.” He did not anticipate getting laid.
He was not about to complain. Well, not beyond two concerns. First things first, he asked “Are you, um, cleared to have sex? By your doctors?”
Touya snorted, his whole body pressed on top of Hawks with a particularly thick and long body part pressing into Hawks’ groin. “I don’t give a fuck anymore.”
Hawks voiced his second concern. “Should we go to your bedroom? This room doesn’t have a lock, and your siblings don’t tend to knock.”
That, at least, Touya agreed to.
He agreed by pretty much dragging Hawks upstairs, to which Hawks raised no further objections.
Touya’s room was anything but sparse. Everyone was so concerned that he’d come home to an empty room with nothing but childhood memories that they overcorrected hard. Trinkets and books covered the wall to wall shelves. A computer was set up and already outfitted with personalized accessories. The bed, a queen size futon mattress, lay heaped with colorful pillows and soft blankets. Touya bypassed the bookshelves and the computer before shoving Hawks down onto the mattress. The mattress was even softer than the bare tatami.
Touya pressed against Hawks like a man starved, and in a way, he was. Touya had been watched carefully for the better part of two years–that didn’t leave much room for jacking off or hooking up. Mostly, it left a man pent up and impatient. He tugged at Hawks’ shirt, and just as Hawks got that off, Touya already moved on to pulling at Hawks’ dress pants.
Breathless and a bit testy, Hawks said impatiently, “Don’t you wanna worry about taking off your own clothes?”
Touya half grunted, half laughed, although he did start to strip his own things off. “That’s the least sexy thing anyone’s ever said.”
Hawks agreed, but this didn’t waylay either man. Touya’s pinked skin exposed and Hawks’ similar scar showing strong, they didn’t waste anymore time.
Touya kissed him, hard and passionate. Hawks kissed back, matching Touya’s intensity. They’d been waiting on this for so long, why hold back now that they were in the moment?
From a canvas tote Hawks never would have looked twice at among the mess of gifts and snacks littering the floor, Touya produced a palm sized glass bottle of lube. There was no question of condoms or other bullshit; Touya had abstained from sexual exploits by medical necessity; Hawks by hopeful, monogamous choice.
Touya warmed himself up easily, as if he’d been waiting for this moment. He had, fuck, he had. Despite not having done this in nearly two years, Touya coated his finger in lube and began stretching himself with practiced ease. First, one finger poked and teased at his hole before slipping slowing inside himself, pumping bit by bit, deeper and deeper. Touya’s eyes fluttered closed, enjoying opening himself up.
Hawks enjoyed the show from underneath the man, basking in Touya’s calm, ethereal expression. Mouth barely parted, white lashes ghosting over his healthy skin, cheeks tinted red with blush. When Touya added a second finger, he moaned softly.
No longer able to simply watch, Hawks needed to touch. He ran his hands up and down Touya’s sides, teased his reconstructed nipples, and squeezed his chest and ass. Being able to hold Touya after all this time, after so many weeks and months wondering if the man would even live—the relief turned him on almost as much as seeing Touya naked and fucking himself with his fingers.
Once prepared, Touya wasted no time before he eased down onto Hawks, his face tight with anticipation. Was Touya nervous? Excited? A fluttering mix, maybe. Because holy shit, his rim fluttered around Hawks. He tightened on Hawks’ cock as he lowered himself, then raised, then lowered, inching his way down. Touya needed to take it slow, yes, but Hawks could hardly hold himself still as that heat enveloped him. It had just been his hand and cold toys for so long.
Nothing held a candle to having Touya, alive and well, burying Hawks’ inside himself. Hawks moaned as Touya finally bottomed out. He stretched above Hawks, back arching as Hawks filled him up. Nothing looked so good, so angelic as Touya above him, on him. Hawks began rolling his hips, pushing his ankles into the mattress for leverage.
The pressure built and built as they moved in tandem. Touya reached behind himself to cup Hawks’ balls, slowly rolling them as he moved up and down on Hawks’ dick. The multiple sensations drove Hawks crazy, overwhelming him on every front. He gripped Touya’s hips, kneading the healthy, lumpy parts of him.
He couldn’t think, couldn’t wrap his mind around anything other than the immediacy of the man he was inside of. The pressure threatened to burst, and he stuttered out, “Touya, are you close?”
“Yes,” Touya gasped.
“I’m–”
And then, Touya swooped down and covered Hawks’ mouth with his own. They kissed again, locking mouths and exploring with tongue. Inside of Touya in two places, Touya's hand still massaging his balls and occasionally ghosting along the inside of his thighs, Hawks’ felt the pressure break. He bucked hard into Touya, who gasped in a shocked but pleasured cry. Hawks took Touya’s cock in his hand and as he came, he pumped Touya once, twice, and then on the third, Touya joined Hawks. A long, throaty moan poured out of him, stripes of cum covering Hawks’ abdomen.
They panted in synch, basking in the moment. Then, Touya began to lift himself off of Hawks. “Been a while since we did that, huh?” he said as he reached for a box of tissues.
Hawks was still just trying to catch his breath. Eyes half open, drinking in Touya’s naked, glowing body, he said, “It was worth the wait.”
