"The stars shine in your eyes and I know I'm home"
If Michikatsu was a wiser man, he would say the day he chose to become a demon was his utter downfall. However, he's not a wise man. He would never claim to be. The one thing he was well versed in, however, was how he saw people. People like Tanjirō Kamado. The boy who reminded him so much of Yoriichi and yet was also so much more.
The way he fought was mesmerizing, like watching the sun dance off the waters in the afternoon daylight. Elegant, graceful, and bright. Michikatsu wants to chase that sunlight to the ends of the earth, even if it leads to perdition. He wants to hold the other in his hands and caress him in the same way that the moon chases the sun and reflects its light into the night.
The moon cannot shine without the sun, and thus on moonless nights Michikatsu finds himself with fingers dipped into a crystal-clear koi pond not too far from where Tanjirō resides, simply watching over the other. The moon secretly watching over its sun to keep it safe from burning out, or so he keeps telling himself.
Nights like this Michikatsu hums Otsukisan To Boya as he watches Tanjirō sleep peacefully. The moon will protect it's slumbering sun the way the sun protects humans from the creatures of the night. Perhaps one day he'll be brave enough to allow Tanjirō to meet him for now he'll remain an invisible guardian.
"Jūgoya otsukisan gokigen san. Baaya wa oitoma torimashita. Jūgoya otsukisan imōto wa. Inaka e morawarete yukimashita. Jūgoya otsukisan kakasan ni. Mo ichido watashi wa aitai na."
Tanjirō finds himself always singing this to himself as he walks between towns to do his regular demon slaying duties. He isn't sure where he learned it but the calming lullaby seems to keep his thoughts clear enough to focus on the tasks at hand. He does find that he likes the words of talking to moon.
While the sun doesn't need the moon it sings it's sorrows towards it like a mourning dove. Tanjirō walks in the twilight towards the lake that lies at the edge of the city where he completed his last mission. The demon he fought was simple enough to behead though the demon's last words stuck with him.
"The moon needs the sun but the sun does not need the moon."
He ponders the words of that demon as he wads deeper into the lakes waters enjoying the coldness of it washing over him. The demon had been looking past him when it spoke perhaps it wasn't talking to him and yet he felt deeply sorrowful for whoever those words were meant for. Tanjirō stops once the water reaches his chest and looks up to the moon that hangs in the starry sky.
"And the sun looked towards the moon to sing it's sorrow to the one who would listen from the dark."
A deep somber voice sounds from behind him. The cool lake water ripples around Tanjirō as a person with a black and deep purple haori joins at his side looking down upon him. Turning to face the other Tanjirō can see the marks that match his own if he remembers his history correct the man before him is Michikatsu.
The stars reflect quite beautifully in the taller's eyes. Scent alone tells Tanjirō this is who has been watching him from a far. He had been aware of Michikatsu's moonless night visits however finally having a face to the comforting presence was a welcomed change. It felt like having a home again. And so the sun reached out towards his moon wrapping it in a warm embrace under the starry twilight.
